Abstract: Open Journal Systems (OJS) is open source publishing software that has been adopted by scholarly communities around the world. Typically, it is hosted by academic libraries and used by faculty and graduate students to disseminate research articles independent of proprietary, for-profit journal publishers. Increasingly, however, educators are using this software for assignments and initiatives that give undergraduate students hands on experience with open access publishing of their own digital works and that of their peers. Drawing on a range of examples, this session will highlight ways that librarians can provide technical support, editorial guidance, and media/digital literacy instruction to help create and maintain open access student journals. Participants will also have an opportunity to see the inner workings of OJS while being asked to consider the possibilities and implications of managing an open journal hosting service at their own library, be it public, academic, or special.

As content has become an ubiquitous part of our lives, content strategy has evolved from a modest practice into a global discipline that reaches across existing areas of digital expertise and shapes new opportunities for content specialists. Content design is one such opportunity.
Informed by content strategy, content design has emerged in recent years thanks to the brilliant work of pioneers like the GDS Team at GOV.UK. Where content strategy excels (pun intended) at the meticulous work of enterprise site redesigns and the like, content design is ideal for the iterative sprints often associated with product design.
At its core, content design empowers creative thinkers and systematic doers who understand the nature of interactive content to partner with designers and technologists in order to build amazing digital products that meet the needs of real people. What does reference look like at your library? - #risg2018Catherine Johnston
Presented at the 2018 Reference @ the Metcalfe seminar. This talk came about from a series of discussions. Library staff continue to query what reference is, what is the role of a reference librarian, what constitutes a healthy reference collection, how the face of information and reference services continues to change as library services evolve (& Councils merge) and as technologies emerge to challenge traditional methodologies and service models. This talk has been heavily influenced by the recent VALA conference in February this year; by the American Libraries Association’s “Libraries Transform” campaign; by a talk from Duncan Smith from NoveList at the Readers Advisory seminar back in March; and quite heavily by the book - “Algorithms of oppression: how search engines reinforce racism” by Safiya Umoja Noble.

Dr. Curtis Rogers is the Director of Communications for the South Carolina State Library and Coordinates the South Carolina Center for the Book and has been working in the library and information science field for 32 years. He has worked at the Union Carnegie Library, the Charleston County Public Library and has taught courses at the USC School of Library and Information Science. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Geography, Master of Library and Information Science, and Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina. In 2001, he completed the University of the Azores Summer Study Course in Azorean Portuguese Culture and Language and in 2002 completed the Certified Public Manager credential. In 2008, he was President of the SC Library Association.

Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing.
