Lean Development Practices for Enterprise AgileTechWell
Enterprise agile initiatives require strategic, portfolio, product, and team perspectives at all levels. Alan Shalloway has found that lean software development principles help integrate all of these perspectives into a cohesive, actionable whole. With a combination of lean science, lean management, lean team, and lean learning methods, Alan shows how your organization can prepare for enterprise agility. Lean science focuses on the “laws” present in all software development projects. Lean management empowers executives to contribute to the context within which teams can flourish. Lean team methods are actualized in Kanban approaches. Lean learning empowers everyone in the organization to improve his skills and practices. Alan shows how you can make these four perspectives work together so that enterprise software development teams build the right software in the right way and continue to improve their practices along the way.
Agile practices continue to improve as organizations move forward with adoption and adaption. However, as they move forward, they often run into daunting challenges—coordinating projects with highly complex requirements and interdependencies; navigating highly political environments; and finding ways to fund, report, and integrate agile project work into existing organizational processes. Jamie Mades has found that the Lean Agile Portfolio bridges these gaps, applying lean product development flow principles to identify high-value initiatives and speed completion of work. It reduces risk and uncertainty using agile development practices to realize those initiatives. Jamie discusses how to break down silos across all areas, reduce the divide between agile practices and senior executive requirements, and improve collaboration. Using a $500M portfolio at a Fortune 100 company as an example, he reviews how they seamlessly integrated agile planning into the annual funding cycle and coordinated highly complex work across the organization. Join Jamie to learn where you need to drive changes and where you can adapt agile practices to meet organizational needs.

From Project to Product: Don't You Dare Mess With PlanningCprime
If you work in tech, you probably have a love/hate relationship with project planning. We dislike it because to get it right, we need to accurately predict the future, a largely impossible task. On the other hand, we like it because it gives business leaders the "predictability" they long for in order to make sound decisions that drive business growth.
Some in the agile community have resisted the need for planning, while others have simply encouraged planning in shorter cycles. As the shift from project thinking to product thinking becomes mainstream, we need to reconsider the impact on planning.
Take a deep dive into planning and discusses how this changes for the better as we shift from project to product. We explore:
- The difference between project plans and product horizons
- Turning the Iron Triangle over: Time, Budget, Scope is still a "pick two"
- How to estimate in ranges
- Ways to create roadmaps and product horizons at the portfolio, product family, and product levels
- The reasons to steer the conversation from "When will you be done?" to "What are we investing in next?"

And with velocity as an overarching objective in agile, you should be tracking other things so that you know what else you could be impacting by going faster. But, with all the metrics so readily available to us today, how do we filter through to the most meaningful?

App Modernization with .NET Core: How Travelers Insurance is Going Cloud-NativeVMware Tanzu
At Travelers Insurance, a decade old rating engine was still on the mainframe, making it difficult to scale, expensive to run, and reliant on a shrinking pool of skilled engineers. Rating engines are fundamental to the insurance quoting process, and at the very heart of the business. It was time to modernize and take advantage of the scalability, stability, automation and fast iteration cycles made possible by cloud-native architecture.
In this webinar, Viraj Naik of Travelers Insurance and Rohit Kelapure of Pivotal will take us on their journey from mainframe to microservices. Viraj and Rohit will describe how they built a distributed, event-driven rating engine with .NET Core on Pivotal Platform using Steeltoe, running on Linux stem cells. The new rating engine exceeded SLAs and reduced time to production to under 60 minutes.
You’ll learn the keys to a successful mainframe rewrite-based modernization, including:
● A pragmatic, domain-driven approach and phased delivery, including implementing a strangler pattern and anti-corruption layers.
● How to port business objects and business rules from mainframe to .NET.
● New innovations developed and delivered during the migration process.
Speakers:
Viraj Naik, Lead Solutions Architect at Travelers Insurance
Rohit Kelapure, Principal Solution Architect at Pivotal
Applying Lean Startup Principles to Agile ProjectsTechWell
Warning! You can still build the wrong product using agile. In Eric Ries’ book The Lean Startup, he poses the question: What if we found ourselves building something that nobody wanted? In that case, what would it matter if we did it on time and on budget? We often assume the Product Owner is smart enough to define the right product. But what if we are wrong? Michael Hall shares lean startup principles and how they can be applied to ensure that the product we are building is righteous. Learn new agile concepts such as hypothesis-driven project vision, knowledge broker personas, learning maps, minimum learning product, experiment backlogs, experiment test iterations, validated learning, and pivot/persevere decisions. Case studies and Michael’s first-hand product experience emphasize the learning points. New and mature agilistas alike will leave the session armed with Lean Startup agile techniques that can be applied immediately on their agile projects.
Offering the right product and the technology needed for that. Intelligent services for feature elicitation, prioritization, release optimization, development and evaluation.
Converting from a three tier or monolithic application to microservices can be daunting, and often comes at a non-trivial cost or effort. So why are organizations doing it, and how do they justify the expense? We will discuss some of the practices and migration strategies used by organizations who undergo this sort of transformation, such as extracting functions through refactoring and converting them to microservices. As the journey progresses, we learn that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to making applications cloud-native… so the real question needs to be ‘how do I find the right approach for me?’ We can help you begin to answer that question for yourself, by discussing the facets of consideration such as technical, procedural, and risk tolerance to name a few.

Pragmatics of Agility - by Venkat SubramaniamSynerzip
This webinar covers the essence of Agile and provides guidance on dealing with common impediments.
Only one thing matters in software development – to successfully deliver a product so users can derive value. If we’re not succeeding with it, it does not matter what the process is called or how we do it. Agile development can help reduce risk and increase the chances of success, but there is no magic wand we can wave at the problem for a quick-fix. It takes disciplined, dedicated, and continuous effort to achieve the desired results.

Enhancing Research Orchestration Capabilities at ORNL.pdfGlobus
Cross-facility research orchestration comes with ever-changing constraints regarding the availability and suitability of various compute and data resources. In short, a flexible data and processing fabric is needed to enable the dynamic redirection of data and compute tasks throughout the lifecycle of an experiment. In this talk, we illustrate how we easily leveraged Globus services to instrument the ACE research testbed at the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility with flexible data and task orchestration capabilities.
In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.
Listen to the keynote address and hear about the latest developments from Rachana Ananthakrishnan and Ian Foster who review the updates to the Globus Platform and Service, and the relevance of Globus to the scientific community as an automation platform to accelerate scientific discovery.

First Steps with Globus Compute Multi-User EndpointsGlobus
In this presentation we will share our experiences around getting started with the Globus Compute multi-user endpoint. Working with the Pharmacology group at the University of Auckland, we have previously written an application using Globus Compute that can offload computationally expensive steps in the researcher's workflows, which they wish to manage from their familiar Windows environments, onto the NeSI (New Zealand eScience Infrastructure) cluster. Some of the challenges we have encountered were that each researcher had to set up and manage their own single-user globus compute endpoint and that the workloads had varying resource requirements (CPUs, memory and wall time) between different runs. We hope that the multi-user endpoint will help to address these challenges and share an update on our progress here.

Exploring Innovations in Data Repository Solutions - Insights from the U.S. G...Globus
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has made substantial investments in meeting evolving scientific, technical, and policy driven demands on storing, managing, and delivering data. As these demands continue to grow in complexity and scale, the USGS must continue to explore innovative solutions to improve its management, curation, sharing, delivering, and preservation approaches for large-scale research data. Supporting these needs, the USGS has partnered with the University of Chicago-Globus to research and develop advanced repository components and workflows leveraging its current investment in Globus. The primary outcome of this partnership includes the development of a prototype enterprise repository, driven by USGS Data Release requirements, through exploration and implementation of the entire suite of the Globus platform offerings, including Globus Flow, Globus Auth, Globus Transfer, and Globus Search. This presentation will provide insights into this research partnership, introduce the unique requirements and challenges being addressed and provide relevant project progress.

Globus Compute wth IRI Workflows - GlobusWorld 2024Globus
As part of the DOE Integrated Research Infrastructure (IRI) program, NERSC at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab and ALCF at Argonne National Lab are working closely with General Atomics on accelerating the computing requirements of the DIII-D experiment. As part of the work the team is investigating ways to speedup the time to solution for many different parts of the DIII-D workflow including how they run jobs on HPC systems. One of these routes is looking at Globus Compute as a way to replace the current method for managing tasks and we describe a brief proof of concept showing how Globus Compute could help to schedule jobs and be a tool to connect compute at different facilities.

Developing Distributed High-performance Computing Capabilities of an Open Sci...Globus
COVID-19 had an unprecedented impact on scientific collaboration. The pandemic and its broad response from the scientific community has forged new relationships among public health practitioners, mathematical modelers, and scientific computing specialists, while revealing critical gaps in exploiting advanced computing systems to support urgent decision making. Informed by our team’s work in applying high-performance computing in support of public health decision makers during the COVID-19 pandemic, we present how Globus technologies are enabling the development of an open science platform for robust epidemic analysis, with the goal of collaborative, secure, distributed, on-demand, and fast time-to-solution analyses to support public health.

Key Characteristics
1. How baked are the requirements
2. Level of trust between the dev team and
the product owner
3. Timing of (fixed) budget estimate

1. Requirements Baked?
• Is the vision and the idea that drives the product evolving from hazy to
well defined ?
• Is the scope of the market that the product is trying to address
becoming more and more accurately defined ?
• Is the revenue model thought through as an integral part of the idea ?
• Have any real end users started using the product? Is it a startup
building out a product idea from scratch or an extension to an existing
product?
• Is it an existing technology being applied to a new domain or a new
technology being applied to an existing domain?
• Is it a case of a simple re-write where you are porting an existing
product to a new database or a different operating system?

2. Level of Mutual Trust
• Mutual trust is a two-way street
• Client/product owner apprehensive about
– Receiving good quality software
– Not getting “ripped-off” (willing to pay only fair/competitive market
price)
– Don’t want dev team spinning wheels with “$ meter running”
• Vendor/dev team apprehensive about
– Continued client commitment and involvement
– Likelihood of collecting the payment and not being unfairly
penalized for over-runs
• Are the two sides seeing each other as competing or collaborating? If
there are developers on both sides are the experience levels
matching? Do they have professional respect for each other?
No Trust Complete Trust

3. Timing of the estimate
• Early estimates are inaccurate because
– Customer has not yet thought through the requirements
– Developers have not yet thought through the design.
• Estimates after “iteration zero” are more accurate.
• Estimates go on improving as iterations progress.
Hence do re-plan and re estimate

4. Maturity & Caliber of Team
• Domain knowledge- is the customer and
established player in the domain? Does the
development team have domain experience?
• Technical Expertise – Is the customer aware of
technical challenges? Does the development team
have the technical expertise to address the
technical challenges?
• Experience level – Are the developers and the

budget Agile projects
• Discuss the common DOs and DONTs
• Recommend alternative approaches for effectively

Common DOs
• Wait for at least one iteration before you submit the
bid
• Keep re prioritizing and re-estimating after each
iteration
• Listen to the end users’ pain points
• Question the product-market definition and the
revenue model if its not clear to you.
• Add a time buffer, requirements buffer and/or price
buffer
• Above all, stick with sound design and coding
practices. Move some stories out but don’t reduce
the story points by compromising quality

19. Confidential www.synerzip.com 19
Common DONTs
• Don’t go for a fixed budget if there is lack of
maturity in terms of technical or domain knowledge.
• Don’t commit to a price until you have at least one
iteration completed.
• Don’t work in a fixed price for a startup who are still
unclear about their product/market or business
model.
• Don’t sign up if a project has no flexibility on price,
requirements, time or resources
• Above all, don’t compromise on quality of software
delivered or coding standards to fit within the
budget
