An important challenge in creating automated tests
is how to design test fixtures, i.e., the setup code that initializes the
system under test before actual automated testing can start. Test
designers have to choose between different approaches for the
setup, trading off maintenance overhead with slow test execution.
Over time, test code quality can erode and test smells can develop,
such as the occurrence of overly general fixtures, obscure inline
code and dead fields. In this paper, we investigate how
fixture-related test smells evolve over time by analyzing several
thousand revisions of five open source systems. Our findings
indicate that setup management strategies strongly influence the
types of test fixture smells that emerge in code, and that several
types of fixture smells often emerge at the same time. Based on
this information, we recommend important guidelines for setup
strategies, and suggest how tool support can be improved to help
in both avoiding the emergence of such smells as well as how to
refactor code when test smells do appear.
The field of machine programming — the automation of the development of software — is making notable research advances. This is, in part, due to the emergence of a wide range of novel techniques in machine learning. In today’s technological landscape, software is integrated into almost everything we do, but maintaining software is a time-consuming and error-prone process. When fully realized, machine programming will enable everyone to express their creativity and develop their own software without writing a single line of code. Intel realizes the pioneering promise of machine programming, which is why it created the Machine Programming Research (MPR) team in Intel Labs. The MPR team’s goal is to create a society where everyone can create software, but machines will handle the “programming” part.
Domain-specific modeling languages and generators have been
shown to significantly improve the productivity and quality of
system and software development. These benefits are typically
reported without explaining the size of the initial investment in
creating the languages, generators and related tooling. We compare the investment needed across ten cases, in two different ways, focusing on the effort to develop a complete modeling solution for a particular domain with the MetaEdit+ tool. Firstly, we use a case study research method to obtain detailed data on the development effort of implementing two realistically-sized domain-specific modeling solutions. Secondly, we review eight publicly available cases
from various companies to obtain data from industry experiences with the same tool, and compare them with the results from our case studies. Both the case studies and the industry reports indicate that, for this tool, the investment required to create domain-specific modeling support is modest: ranging from 3 to 15 man-days with an average of 10 days

Finding Zero-Days Before The Attackers: A Fortune 500 Red Team Case StudyDevOps.com
Graph databases offer security teams a new and more efficient way to find zero day vulnerabilities. As software development increases its reliance on open source libraries and release cycles get faster and faster application security is becoming more and more difficult. AppSec still has the same charter -- to find vulnerabilities in dev, before they reach prod, but now with more complexity and less time. Graphing source code, and traversing it to identify technical and business logic vulnerabilities, gives AppSec teams a much needed leg up identify zero days and stay ahead of attackers.
As numerous famous examples demonstrate, open source libraries are a common attack vector. Hence, AppSec teams must secure 3rd party dependencies just as vigorously as custom code. AIST is a conference on the Analysis of Images, Social Networks, and Texts. This year, it was held at Moscow Polytechnic University on June 27-29. The conference is intended for computer scientists and industry professionals whose research interests involve applications of data mining and machine learning techniques to various problem domains: image processing, analysis of social networks, and natural language processing. AIST boasts its interdisciplinary nature, bridging the gap between researchers and practitioners.
All research papers submitted to the conference went through a double-blind reviewing process and were reviewed by at least three program committee members. The accepted papers were presented by their authors on July 27 and 28.
Anna Gromova’s research on Using Cluster Analysis for Characteristics Detection in Software Defect Reports was among this year’s accepted papers. Anna, who is an Exactpro researcher, presented her work in the General Topics of Data Analysis section of the conference.
Anna’s research focuses on the metrics and predictions of defect reports. In her research paper, Anna explores the workings of how extended bug attribute analysis can effectively reveal software weaknesses and improve the testing strategy, and how machine learning techniques can facilitate the process of building an automated recommendation system for project managers and QA team leads. Such a system would help them get a better picture of the risks associated with software defects, as well as obtain more accurate information about a bug's lifecycle.
“In future, we are planning to build an automated recommendation system based on the cluster analysis of our defect reports. A system like that could be used by all QA team members to improve the existing processes of developing the testing strategies and plans”, says Anna Gromova, Exactpro Researcher.

The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
