campus as the
living laboratory

2. Favorable Structure
• Sustainability is a broad area of involvement
• Often results from “creative solutions”
• Conditions on campuses ripe for experimental
collaboration between academic and
administration & facilities/operations units
• Think beyond the traditional business areas
3. Example Opportunities
• “Green” Funds
• Sustainability offices
• Policy and procurement
• Operations offices
• Interdisciplinary class projects
4. Activity:
Take the next 15 min. to discuss in your groups:
1. What are the likely entities/offices you can
(or have) engage(d) on your campus to use as
an extension of classroom projects?
2. What is (was) the subject matter of the
engagement (e.g., marketing, policy, economic
analysis, ROI, etc.)?
5. Resources
• Humboldt Energy Independence Fund (HEIF):

• Humboldt State Univ. Office of Sustainability

Editor's Notes
The purpose of this last section is to illuminate the potential resources you have on your campuses for engaging offices and/or departments that can provide real world problem-sets for students to tackle or collaborate with class exercises.
Because sustainability is so broad there are a corresponding number of diverse areas a campus may have for engagementOften admin or others don’t think they are looking for help with a “sustainability” issue, but it is, once viewed in a wider context. These issues are not always familiar enough to everyone to have a frame of reference to know how to address it, so it can be framed as a “creative solution”.Campuses frequently have simplistic enough approval or authority channels that implementing particular changes can be much easier than other types of organizations that are similarly large, which can be conducive to experimentation.Just because there are no sales figures, production targets, or profit margins in play does not mean there is no room for entrepreneurial business inclined students to engage with sectors of the campus.
Many campuses now have some form of a “green” fund, initiating sustainable practices or activities on campus, usually with some form of funding mechanisms for implementationSustainability officers or offices are usually looking for additional help to conduct analyses or develop change strategiesAdministrative and operations offices are frequently tasked with implementing sustainable practices to comply with state or system mandates (e.g., California has the Global Warming Solutions Act, AB32)Seek out potential interdisciplinary partnerships with other faculty where classes can do collaborative projects
