The document describes a series of design assignments focused on exploring symmetry and asymmetry through shapes. Students were tasked with dividing or multiplying basic geometric shapes to generate novel designs adhering to specific rules. In a subsequent assignment, students added shading to transform the 2D shapes into implied 3D forms existing in a shared space. Another project asked students to take one of their 2D designs and conceptualize it as a 3D spatial experience. A final assignment involved designing an abstract sculpture representing the conceptual ideas and use of materials in a building by architect Charles Correa.

4. Form Assignment: In this assignment the implied space was made concrete through the use of tone and value. The shapes are shaded to transform them from 2-dimensional, planar elements into 3-dimensional forms. (Only the most successful 2-dim shapes were chosen.) We were to imagine the compositions as the top of an irregular form and decide what shadows the shapes would cast. Tone was added to the shapes that were assembled to create one composition and to certain successful singular shapes to give the illusion of 3-dimensional forms existing in a spatial relationship.

7. Space from Form Assignment: The challenge of the Space From Form project is to imagine the three-dimensional implications and possibilities of the two-dimensional designs. The goal of this project is to discover and visualize three-dimensional form arising from a familiar two dimensional design. The plan view was used to initially develop and organize the design. It was then expressed in plan oblique to explore the design in three dimensions. We designed a three-dimensional spatial experience based on one of our ‘Shape’ designs. A concept statement also needed to be developed.

13. Assignment: Each student was given an architect and one of their works. The student needed to have an understanding of the building and the architect’s conceptual ideas behind the design of that building. Based on the research, the student needed to design an abstract representational ‘sculpture’ of the architect’s ideas using the materials of wood, steel, glass, and concrete in a meaningful way. By working with these materials we also learned of their capabilities and limitations. Man intuitively perceived it as the abode of the Supernatural. Hence to climb a path to the top of the hill, where the Gods dwell, is a paradigm of such mythic power that it has been central to the beliefs of almost every society, since the beginning of time. Open to sky spaces not only improve living conditions, but can also have considerable economic value in a developing economy like India. -Open to sky principle is viable in the high-rise buildings of Bombay, where the issue is compounded by the hot humid climate. An east-west orientation catches the prevailing breezes, and also the best views in the city, but it also exposes the building to the blistering sun and the monsoon rains. Sculpture: Used the philosophy of “Blessings in the Sky” to create a tall sculpture that was essentially a way to catch rain and represent a cooling system. Color was incorporated as in many of Correa’s building. Color represents the Indian flag. Sculpture was 6 ½ feet tall and 4 ½ feet wide.
