What is Unity in Diversity?
 Unity in diversity means oneness in the varieties.
 Unity in diversity focuses on the existence of unity even
after lots of differences of cultural, social, physical, linguistic,
religious, political, ideological, psychological, etc.
 More number of diversities makes more complex unity.

Organization
 The term Unity in Diversity in organization is totally
concerned with the teamwork in the organization.
 “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins
championships.” This a quote by Michael Jordan
emphasizing on the importance of unity, knowledge and
teamwork. An organization may not realize its goals when all
employee does not embrace teamwork.

Why Is Diversity in the Workplace
Important to Employees?
 As workforce demographics shift and global markets emerge,
workplace diversity inches closer to becoming a business
necessity instead of a banner that companies wave to show their
commitment to embracing differences and change.
 Employees reap tangible and intangible benefits from
workplace benefits, not the least of which include respect from
co-workers and business gains.

Mutual Respect
 Workplace diversity fosters mutual respect among employees.
Whether employees work in groups or teams comprised of co-
workers with varied work styles, who represent different
cultures a synergistic work environment become the norm.
 Although an idyllic atmosphere may be difficult to achieve,
employees nevertheless recognize the many strengths and
talents that diversity brings to the workplace and they gain
respect for their colleagues’ performance.

Conflict Resolution
 Conflict inevitably occurs in the work environment. However,
employees who acknowledge others’ differences often also
find similarities, particularly when there are common goals --
production and quality.
 The ability to resolve workplace conflict minimizes potential
liability for employee complaints that would otherwise
escalate to formal matters, such as litigation.
 Workplace diversity preserves the quality of employees’
relationships with their co-workers and their supervisors.

Business Reputation
 Diversity in the workplace is important for employees because
it manifests itself in building a great reputation for the
company, leading to increased profitability and opportunities
for workers.
 Business reputations flourish when companies demonstrate
their commitment to diversity through aggressive outreach
and recruiting efforts.

Job Promotion
 The importance of workplace diversity cannot be overstated
when it comes to an organization’s ability to reach markets in
foreign countries.
 The appeal of global markets creates two kinds of
opportunities for employees: opportunities for promotion and
employee development.

Increased Exposure
 A diverse workplace offers more than exposure to employees
from different cultures and backgrounds.
 Employees learn from co-workers whose work styles vary and
whose attitudes about work varies from their own.

Increased creativity
 In a diverse workplace, this saying becomes two different
people are better than one.
 When people in different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs
come together to work for a common goal, increased creativity
can be achieved.

Increased adaptability
 An organization has to develop a variety of solutions, forcing
them to adapt to a diverse workforce.
 Moreover, people from diverse backgrounds can provide ideas
for adapting to ever-changing customer demands and
fluctuating markets.
 This also means that an organization has to develop a new
process for people with different ideas to collaborate and work
together. They must also learn to think cross-culturally and to
quickly adapt to new situations

Melting Pot of ideas
 No two people think exactly alike, and a company that knows
how to exploit varying viewpoints of each individual can
create a large pool of ideas and experiences.
 The Employer can then draw from the pool strategies to
effectively deal with business concerns and customer needs.

Increased productivity
Globalization and internalization are two of the gifts that
workforce diversity brings to the table, which is why foreign
executives are very successful in the corporate world in
America, while citizens from Europe find their place in high-
level jobs. Put them together in one place and what you get is
increased productivity.

Disadvantages of Diversity in
the Workplace
Communication Issues
 Effective communication is a driving factor for success.
Unfortunately, diversity can be in the way, and can directly
impact productivity because of a lack of cohesiveness.
 This explains why some companies catering to international
customers hire multilingual or bilingual customer service reps.
 So unless effective communication is achieved, workplace
diversity can be a problem.

Lack of freedom of speech
 In a diverse workplace, an employee must be sensitive to
others’ race, cultural background, beliefs, etc.
 So you don’t just crack jokes about the Chinese or Indians,
because it won’t be as acceptable as when a stand-up
comedian would do it.
 People can’t freely state their opinions or tell stories whenever
they want for fear of being judged as discriminating.

Increased cost of training
 Apart from the usual training, an organization must invest in
seminars, programs and lectures designed to promote diversity
in the workplace.
 If unity is to be achieved, such training is essential as they
will teach employees how to accept thoughts, ideas and
personalities of others in the workplace.

Increased competition
 Competition in the workplace is good as it can drive success
and higher productivity. But when employees do not accept
other culture, they are likely to compete against each other,
rather than become collaborative members of a team.
 This results in divisions where people prefer to work
separately, prolonging the process of task or project
completion.

Integration issues
 Even in a non-diverse workplace exclusive social groups or
cliques naturally happens, more so in a diverse workforce.
 When such groups form, informal divisions can occur, which
will impede social integration.
 It will also lead to a situation where culturally diverse
employees will avoid each other.
 This can hinder the effective sharing of knowledge,
experience, skills, resulting in decreased productivity, team
efficacy, and business growth.

What is Unity in Diversity?  Unity in diversity means oneness in the varieties.  Unity in diversity focuses on the existence of unity even after lots of differences of cultural, social, physical, linguistic, religious, political, ideological, psychological, etc.  More number of diversities makes more complex unity. Unity in Diversity in Organization  The term Unity in Diversity in organization is totally concerned with the teamwork in the organization.  “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships.” This a quote by Michael Jordan emphasizing on the importance of unity, knowledge and teamwork. Why Is Diversity in the Workplace Important to Employees?  As workforce demographics shift and global markets emerge, workplace diversity inches closer to becoming a business necessity instead of a banner that companies wave to show their commitment to embracing differences and change.  Employees reap tangible and intangible benefits from workplace benefits, not the least of which include respect from co-workers and business gains.   • 6. Mutual Respect  Workplace diversity fosters mutual respect among employees. Whether employees work in groups or teams comprised of co- workers with varied work styles, who represent different cultures a synergistic work environment become the norm.  Although an idyllic atmosphere may be difficult to achieve, employees nevertheless recognize the many strengths and talents that diversity brings to the workplace and they gain respect for their colleagues’ performance.   • 7. Conflict Resolution  Conflict inevitably occurs in the work environment. However, employees who acknowledge others’ differences often also find similarities, particularly when there are common goals -- production and quality.  The ability to resolve workplace conflict minimizes potential liability for employee complaints that would otherwise escalate to formal matters, such as litigation.  Workplace diversity preserves the quality of employees’ relationships with their co-workers and their supervisors. Business Reputation  Diversity in the workplace is important for employees because it manifests itself in building a great reputation for the company, leading to increased profitability and opportunities for workers.  Business reputations flourish when companies demonstrate their commitment to diversity through aggressive outreach and recruiting efforts. Job Promotion  The importance of workplace diversity cannot be overstated when it comes to an organization’s ability to reach markets in foreign countries.  The appeal of global markets creates two kinds of opportunities for employees: opportunities for promotion and employee development. Advantages of Diversity in the Workplace Increased creativity  In a diverse workplace, this saying becomes two different people are better than one.  When people in different cultures, backgrounds and beliefs come together to work for a common goal, increased creativity can be achieved. Increased adaptability  An organization has to develop a variety of solutions, forcing them to adapt to a diverse workforce.  Moreover, people from diverse backgrounds can provide ideas for adapting to ever-changing customer demands and fluctuating markets.  This also means that an organization has to develop a new process for people with different ideas to collaborate and work together. Melting Pot of ideas  No two people think exactly alike, and a company that knows how to exploit varying viewpoints of each individual can create a large pool of ideas and experiences.  The Employer can then draw from the pool strategies to effectively deal with business concerns and customer needs. Increased productivity Globalization and internalization are two of the gifts that workforce diversity brings to the table, which is why foreign executives are very successful in the corporate world in America, while citizens from Europe find their place in high- level jobs.   • 15. Disadvantages of Diversity in the Workplace Communication Issues  Effective communication is a driving factor for success. Unfortunately, diversity can be in the way, and can directly impact productivity because of a lack of cohesiveness.  This explains why some companies catering to international customers hire multilingual or bilingual customer service reps.  So unless effective communication is achieved, workplace diversity can be a problem. Lack of freedom of speech  In a diverse workplace, an employee must be sensitive to others’ race, cultural background, beliefs, etc.  So you don’t just crack jokes about the Chinese or Indians, because it won’t be as acceptable as when a stand-up comedian would do it.  People can’t freely state their opinions or tell stories whenever they want for fear of being judged as discriminating. Increased cost of training  Apart from the usual training, an organization must invest in seminars, programs and lectures designed to promote diversity in the workplace.  If unity is to be achieved, such training is essential as they will teach employees how to accept thoughts, ideas and personalities of others in the workplace.   • 18. Increased competition  Competition in the workplace is good as it can drive success and higher productivity. But when employees do not accept other culture, they are likely to compete against each other, rather than become collaborative members of a team.  This results in divisions where people prefer to work separately, prolonging the process of task or project completion. Integration issues  Even in a non-diverse workplace exclusive social groups or cliques naturally happens, more so in a diverse workforce.  When such groups form, informal divisions can occur, which will impede social integration.  It will also lead to a situation where culturally diverse employees will avoid each other.  This can hinder the effective sharing of knowledge, experience, skills, resulting in decreased productivity, team efficacy, and business growth.
