1. UNIT-1 PART B & C IMPORTANT QUESTIONS
1) Explain the sources and type of various pollutant in industrial
wastewater and discuss their impact? (13mark)
INTRODUCTION: Industrial waste include liquid, solids, and gases, we
are presently concerned with liquid part, which is commonly known as
industrial waste water.
SOURCES OF INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER:
• Agricultural waste
• Food industry
• Textile industry
• Dairy industry
2. Various types of pollutants present in wastewater:
• Suspended solids
• Oil& Grease
• Phosphate
• Heavy Metals
• Colour
Objectives:
The principal objectives of industrial wastewater treatment is generally
to allow industrial effluents to be disposed of without danger to human
health
3.
4.
5. • PRELIMINARY TREATMENT:
Removal of wastewater constituent such as sticks, floatable grit, and grease that may
cause maintenance problem with treatment operation , processes.
• PRIMARY TREATMENT:
Removal of portion of the suspended solids and organic matter from the wastewater.
• SECONDARY TREATMENT:
Removal of biodegradable organic matter and suspended solids. Disinfection is also
typically included in the definition of conventional secondary treatment.
Activate sludge process:
In activated sludge process wastewater containing organic matter is aerated in
aeration basin in which micro-organisms metabolize the suspended and soluble
organic matter.
Tertiary Treatment:
Removal of residual suspended solids usually by granular medium filtration or micro
screen. Disinfection is also typically a part of tertiary treatment. Nutrient removal is
often included in this definition.
6. 2) Describe the regulatory requirement for treatment of in wastewater? (13 mark)
7. WASTEWATER:
Water from houses, schools and business is flushed down the toilet or emptied down
the drain. It enters sewer system and travels to the WWTP
WWTP INLET SCREEN:
Waste water is screened as it enters the WWTP to remove grit, rags and anything else
that has been tipped down the drain.
AERATION LAGOON
The lagoon where the large mixers stirs the water in the tank and mix in oxygen
loving bugs who remove chemical in the water
AEROBIC LAGOON
The lagoon where aerobic microorganisms which eats the organic matter in the
wastewater.
FACULTATIVE LAGOON
This lagoons has a layer of water with oxygen loving microorganisms and a layer of
water underneath with microorganisms which doesn’t like oxygen(anaerobic) which
consumes the organic matter in the wastewater as food.
8. ULTRA VIOLET DISINFECTION
UV lights kills the bad microorganism that are left in the water
WINTER STORAGE
This open storage hold the water which can be either reused on park, gardens or it can be
discharge to a creek.
CHEMICAL ADDED
Chemical are added to help the dirt and microorganism in the water stick together before they
can be filtered out of the water.
FILTRATION
Filtration remove the solid dirt and sedimentation microorganisms and algae from the water.
REMOVAL &DRYING OF SLUDGE
The solid waste removed from the water is send to the drying beds, this sludge is turned over
with a bulldozer until its dries out and looks like dirt, this dirt can be sent to farms where it is out
on as fertilizers to make crop grow better
SAND FILTRATION
Sand helps clean the water more
CLEAR WATER STORAGE
This storage hods the clear and clean water. It is disinfected with chlorine to kill any remaining
microorganisms in it.
9. Explain the sampling and modeling techniques in the
characterization of industrial wastewater? (13mark)
