UNIT PLAN: SALEM
WITCH TRIALS
7th grade English
MONDAY: What is Puritanism?
Analyze Learners:
This lesson will be taught to a 7TH grade English class. This
class has been designed to be writing intensive. There are
11 boys and 9 girls. They are 90% Caucasian and 10%
African-American. There are no children that have special
needs and need modification.

State Objectives:
Students will be knowledgeable in the events of the Salem
Witch Trials by the end of the week with 85% accuracy.
Today, I will assess their knowledge of Puritanism preactivity vs. post activity. The activities have to be at least
80% factual.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials:
-Students will go on Blogger, make an account if they do
not have one already, and post a blog telling what they
already know about Puritanism. http://www.blogger.com
-Once they are finished with the blog they will make a QR
for that blog and post it to their Twitter page (They should
have already made an account prior to this assignment).
They will also hashtag #AnstedMiddleSalemWitchTrials. I will
go back and retweet the codes on our classroom
account. http://www.qrstuff.com/
-The students will then make an avatar on
http://secondlife.com. I will have made a simulation of
Salem, MA during the 1600’s. They can look around and
see what life may have looked like then.
Lastly, the students will go on Photoshop. They will use
the program to create their ideal image of what
Salem, MA looked like many years ago.
Utilize Media and Materials:
The students will be using blogging, Twitter, QR codes,
Secondlife, and Photoshop. The computers will be in
the classroom readily available for all of these
activities.
Require Learner Participation:
By having a group discussion the students will be
required to be involved. By putting their QR codes on
Twitter they will also be participating because
everyone on social media can see it.
Evaluate and Revise:
The students will get participation credit as long as
they write a blog, make a QR code, post it on Twitter,
and make an avatar on SecondLife.
TUESDAY: Overview of the trials
Analyze Learners:
This lesson will be taught to a 7TH grade English class. This class
has been designed to be writing intensive. There are 11 boys and
9 girls. They are 90% Caucasian and 10% African-American. There
are no children that have special needs and need modification.
State Objectives:
Students will be knowledgeable in the events of the Salem Witch
Trials by the end of the week with 85% accuracy. Today, the
students will be attentive and complete the activity 100%.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials:
-Have a lesson on the Salem Witch Trials and play videos:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TuDJDaaokGM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zaWVmr1BJck
-The class will then watch a documentary about the Salem
Witch Trials, which is on YouTube as well. It goes more indepth than the other videos.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-dA4LIqifc
- The students will then make a poster summarizing the
events of the trial. They will be hung up in the classroom.
Utilize Media and Materials:
The students will be viewing videos on YouTube as well as
making a poster, which will most likely be made on
PowerPoint. This will make them more familiar with
PowerPoint for a later assignment.
Require Learner Participation:
There isn’t a discussion required in today’s lesson. The
students are required to be quiet and attentive throughout
all of the videos.
Evaluate and Revise:
Since the only activity is to create a poster the
students will only be evaluated on the completion of
that. Also, all of the information on the poster has to
be factual. The students also have to be attentive and
pay attention to the videos shown.
WEDNESDAY: Character Profiles
Analyze Learners: This lesson will be taught to a 7TH
grade English class. This class has been designed to be
writing intensive. There are 11 boys and 9 girls. They
are 90% Caucasian and 10% African-American. There
are no children that have special needs and need
modification.
State Objectives: Students will be knowledgeable in
the events of the Salem Witch Trials by the end of the
week with 85% accuracy. Today, the students will
become familiar with the people involved in the trials.
Their information has to be at least 85% accurate.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials:
-The students will get on
http://zunal.com/webquest.php?w=215840.
There I have a lesson plan completed about the
individuals that were involved in the Salem Witch Trials.
They will start this lesson and complete it the next day
if they need to.
-The students will then make a Voki of one of the
Puritans telling “their story”. They have to use factual
information they have learned, but also can use their
imagination to show what the Puritans were thinking.
http://www.voki.com
Utilize Media and Materials:
The students will be going on Webquest to find their lesson. There,
they are required to make a Powerpoint presentation and write
journal entries. They will also be introduced to Voki.
Require Learner Participation:
In the Webquest, there is a group project where the students
have to make a Powerpoint and present it to the class. They will
also be required to write journal entries about their role in the
trials. There is a grading scale for that particular project on the
Webquest so students will know how much participation I expect
from them.
Evaluate and Revise:
To assess that they understand what has been taught to them,
they have to have completely factual information on their
PowerPoint presentation. Since they are pretending to be
someone in their journals and Voki, only the historical information
has to be accurate.
THURSDAY: Writing
Analyze Learners:
This lesson will be taught to a 7TH grade English class. This
class is designed to be writing intensive. There are 11 boys
and 9 girls. They are 90% Caucasian and 10% AfricanAmerican. There are no children that have special needs
and need modification.
State Objectives:
Students will be knowledgeable in the events of the Salem
Witch Trials by the end of the week with 85% accuracy.
Today, the students will write another journal entry giving
their opinion on what made the Salem Witch Trials so
famous and so long. Since this is a reflective piece only the
historical information has to be 90% accurate
Select Methods, Media, and Materials:
-First, the students will finish their Webquest assignment from the day before if
necessary.
-Next, write a reflective journal writing using this prompt:
What made the Salem Witch trials so famous and so lengthy. What even
started it? Was it just good acting, actual witchcraft, or something else?
After completing these entries they will post them on their blog on
http://www.blogger.com.
Utilize Media and Materials:
-If the students did not finish their assignment from the day before, they will
be accessing Webquest and PowerPoint again. With today’s assignment,
they will be using blogger again, which they should be familiar with from
Monday’s assignment.
Require Learner Participation:
The students will have accurately participated in this activity as long as they
complete their blog entries and post them on their Blogger accounts.
Evaluate and Revise:
Since the writing they are doing today is a reflective
piece, they will mainly be judged on grammatical
things. The journal has to be at least two pages with
minimal spelling and grammatical errors. The historical
information added has to be at least 90% accurate as
well.
FRIDAY: Assessment
Analyze Learners:
This lesson will be taught to a 7TH grade English class.
This class is designed to be writing intensive. There are
11 boys and 9 girls. They are 90% Caucasian and 10%
African-American. There are no children that have
special needs and need modification.
State Objectives:
Students will be knowledgeable in the events of the
Salem Witch Trials by the end of the week with 85%
accuracy. Today, the students will be expected to
summarize what they know about the trials with 85%
accuracy.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials:
-The students will be summarizing what they have
learned this week using a podcast. They will probably
need to make an account.
https://www.podomatic.com/login
Once they have completed the podcast they will turn
it in on a dropbox link I will have put on the class
Facebook page.
https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100007254
071637
Utilize Media and Materials:
The students will be using podcasting as well as
dropbox. These are probably both new to them.
Require Learner Participation:
The student will have sufficiently participated as long
as they turn their finished podcast into Dropbox.
Evaluate and Revise:
This is one of the most important projects they will do in
this unit plan because they are proving that they
learned information about Puritans and the Salem
Witch Trials. While they are recording their podcasts I
will be making sure they are not looking online for
information. This summarization has to be completely
from memory. There has to be at least 85% accuracy
on all of the information they present.
