                     SHORT FORMS OF LITERATURE

 Semester: 1, 2011     Unit Type: Tertiary                                Value: 1 unit
 Course: English T
 Teacher: Fay Matthews

 Goals
 This unit should enable students to:
    • read, appreciate and explore a range of short fiction and non-fiction (including
        extracts)
    • demonstrate an understanding of some essential elements of each form of
        literature studied
    • analyse and reflect on the texts studied
    • articulate their ideas concerning the issues arising from the material with
        understanding and clarity

 Content
 Areas for study may include the following:
    • students will be exposed to a variety of short stories, poetry, plays, short films
        and non-fiction materials, such as essays, editorials, articles and extracts
    • students should be made aware of the appropriateness of style and structure in
        different short forms of literature and other texts
    • poetry can be chosen from the work of an individual writer or group of
        writers, or be approached through concentrating on a specific form, such as
        lyric poetry, the sonnet, or by pursuing a common subject, such as conflict,
        love or nature
    • an examination of emerging forms of short textual forms (eg hypertext)
    • a variety of thematic approaches to the texts studied should be adopted.

 *Oral presentations must be presented on an allocated date. Failure to present on the allocated day may
  result in the oral presentation not being assessed unless you have a medical certificate.
 *In class assessment must be done on the scheduled date unless there is an acceptable reason for
  absence and a medical certificate may be required.

•   an ability to respond critically to texts and logically justify viewpoint

Unit Outline

  • 1. Hawker College Unit Outline SHORT FORMS OF LITERATURE Semester: 1, 2011 Unit Type: Tertiary Value: 1 unit Course: English T Teacher: Fay Matthews Goals This unit should enable students to: • read, appreciate and explore a range of short fiction and non-fiction (including extracts) • demonstrate an understanding of some essential elements of each form of literature studied • analyse and reflect on the texts studied • articulate their ideas concerning the issues arising from the material with understanding and clarity Content Areas for study may include the following: • students will be exposed to a variety of short stories, poetry, plays, short films and non-fiction materials, such as essays, editorials, articles and extracts • students should be made aware of the appropriateness of style and structure in different short forms of literature and other texts • poetry can be chosen from the work of an individual writer or group of writers, or be approached through concentrating on a specific form, such as lyric poetry, the sonnet, or by pursuing a common subject, such as conflict, love or nature • an examination of emerging forms of short textual forms (eg hypertext) • a variety of thematic approaches to the texts studied should be adopted. Assessment Item Due Date Weighting In class analysis Week 5, double lesson 25% Analytical essay (take home) Week 9, Thursday 20% Creative Response Wk 15, Monday 25% Oral Presentation Weeks 16-18 30% *Oral presentations must be presented on an allocated date. Failure to present on the allocated day may result in the oral presentation not being assessed unless you have a medical certificate. *In class assessment must be done on the scheduled date unless there is an acceptable reason for absence and a medical certificate may be required.
