Unit 5 Assignment: Concept Usage
Unit 5 Assignment: Concept Usage ON Unit 5 Assignment: Concept UsageDescriptionThe
purpose of this paper is for you to examine the philosophy of nursing and/or the
professional practice model in your facility (if you are not working or the facility does not
have one, then you may choose one from your readings).Example: Your hospital’s
framework is based on Jean Watson’s Caring model.Directions:Select a single word
(concept) that is included or defined within your professional practice model or philosophy,
as a characteristic of the model. For this paper, include a discussion of:A concept from your
organization’s nursing philosophy or professional practice model. Examples include: safety,
patient satisfaction, quality, accessible healthcare, responsibility, and caring. The
organizational definition, if stated. Also list your organization’s mission and vision
statements. If the organizational definition, mission, and/or vision are not stated, explain
this in your paper.Several definitions and uses of the concept (as in the Unit 3 Assignment)
taken from the nursing literature.Your own definition of the concept, as if you are preparing
it to submit to your workplace as a needed refinement (why you have modified the
definition). Develop this from your reading and the organization’s definition. In other
words, modify it as you would like to see it developed into the framework and
organizational structure of the facility by specifically identifying your redefinition and
explaining why you feel the definition of the concept should be modified. How this concept
s your professional practice model. Be sure to specifically identify by name your facility’s
professional practice model or provide a framework that would represent the philosophy of
nursing within your facility, such as Watson’s Caring model. Use 4–6 nursing scholarly
sources to your definitions.Use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological
Association (6th ed.) to cite in text and your reference list.Your Assignment must be 4–6
pages, and should include a title page and reference page (in addition to the 4–6 pages for
the Assignment).Unit 5 Assignment: Concept Usage Unit 5.docx Maybe some of this info
can help. If you need anything else please let me know. thank
you! attachment_1Unformatted Attachment PreviewUnit 5 Models of Nursing Care In this
unit, you will examine Florence Nightingale, Jean Watson’s Caring Model, Patricia Benner’s
From Novice to Expert, and Katie Eriksson. You will also look at a few of the Grand Nursing
Theorists, such as Dorothea Orem, Imogene King, and Dorothy Johnson. In examining these
nursing models, you will attempt to discern the most important features and levels of
abstraction, as well as determine the appropriateness of the application of a model or a
theory to a particular setting. Dorothy Johnson Although Dorothy Johnson did not have a
graduate degree in nursing (her master’s degree was in public health), she was the top
student in her nursing class when she graduated from Vanderbilt School of Nursing in 1942.
Johnson was faculty at Vanderbilt, but had the distinction of developing, with Lulu
Hassenplug, the first 4-year generic basic nursing course in the United States. She joined the
staff of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1949. One of her more renowned
writings, “One Conceptual Model of Nursing” (1968), is considered a classic in nursing
literature. Two particularly striking comments include her statement that “…we [nurses]
may contribute to the achievement of medicine’s goals by fulfilling our own mission”
(Johnson, 1968, p. 9) in relation to working with physicians, and her remarks on the need
for a unified approach to nursing education: “the variations in our conceptions have led us
to considerable variation in word and deed…and often to conflict and disorganization. Only
explication of our thoughts and open discussion are likely to lead us to greater unity and to
greater service to society” (p. 9). Imogene King Dr. King received her initial nursing
education in a diploma nursing program and then obtained a baccalaureate degree in
nursing, a master’s degree in nursing, and a doctorate in education from Teachers College at
Columbia University in New York. Unit 5 Assignment: Concept UsageShe is currently
professor emeritus at the University of South Florida and still very active in her nursing
career, serving as a member of the Code of Nursing Ethics taskforce in the American
Nursing Association. She is considered one of the original nursing theorists and has
achieved international recognition for her Theory of Goal Attainment. (King, 1971; 1981).
Dr. King writes that, as a child, she “learned that goal-setting helped us make positive
decisions in our journey through life. We were taught at home to look at the consequences
of our decisions before finalizing plans” (King, 2001, p. 276). She believed these early
childhood values helped her to frame her theory. She has considerable popularity
internationally as a nursing consultant, working with nurses in China, Germany, Japan,
Canada, Africa, Sweden, and Denmark in helping establish good practice patterns and
applying solid nursing theories and models within their workplaces. Dorothea Orem
Dorothea Orem is one of nursing’s eminent theorists, having developed a widely recognized
model of nursing care. In nursing, there are both theories of care and models of care, each
developed to assist in some aspect of nursing care delivery. Orem’s model is called the Self-
Care Framework. In it, she postulates that people meet their own needs through their own
deliberate actions unless they become ill. If that happens, nurses need to respond to those
needs and assist people in meeting their own care or self-care — hence the name Self-Care
Framework (Orem, 1991). Orem obtained her baccalaureate degree in nursing in 1939 and
an MSN in 1946, both from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She worked diligently to
craft a definition of nursing during a time when she was a nursing consultant to the Division
of Hospital and Institutional Services of the Indiana State Board of Health (Fawcett, 2005),
and her work in this area led her to develop her framework for nursing care. Orem
considered her Self-Care Deficit Theory “knowledge that is both theoretical and practical.
This knowledge is a part of and foundation for continuing development of the practice
science of nursing. The theory’s conceptual constructs articulate with facts and points of
theory from other fields thus indicating areas of need for development….” (Orem, 1993, p.2).
Born in 1915, she continues to work with and refine her theory. Defining Critical Attributes,
Antecedents, and Consequences as the Next Step in the Concept Analysis Process In
readings related to your concept, you will have seen that some characteristics appear over
and over again. Unit 5 Assignment: Concept UsageThese characteristics are called the
defining or critical attributes and help to distinguish between your concept and another
that might be similar. The list may change as your knowledge and understanding of the
concept grows. You may also have come across antecedents of your concept in your
readings. Antecedents are those events or incidents that must occur prior to the occurrence
of the concept. A good example from Walker and Avant (1995) is the antecedents of role
strain: role conflict, role accumulation, rigidity of time and place, which role demands must
be met, and the amount of activity required by the role. In general, when antecedents are
present, the concept is expected to occur. Consequences are events or incidents that occur
as a result of an episode of the concept (1995). An example from Rew (1986) is that one
possible consequence of intuition is knowledge; another would be discovery. Putting
antecedents and consequences together in a concrete example, Cowles (1996) stated that
the concept of grief has an antecedent of loss and a consequence of establishment of a new
reality or new identity. These are not all of the possible antecedents or consequences, just
some brief examples to help your understanding. References Cowles, K. V. (1996). Cultural

Unit 5 Concept Usage.pdf

  • 1. Unit 5 Assignment: Concept Usage Unit 5 Assignment: Concept Usage ON Unit 5 Assignment: Concept UsageDescriptionThe purpose of this paper is for you to examine the philosophy of nursing and/or the professional practice model in your facility (if you are not working or the facility does not have one, then you may choose one from your readings).Example: Your hospital’s framework is based on Jean Watson’s Caring model.Directions:Select a single word (concept) that is included or defined within your professional practice model or philosophy, as a characteristic of the model. For this paper, include a discussion of:A concept from your organization’s nursing philosophy or professional practice model. Examples include: safety, patient satisfaction, quality, accessible healthcare, responsibility, and caring. The organizational definition, if stated. Also list your organization’s mission and vision statements. If the organizational definition, mission, and/or vision are not stated, explain this in your paper.Several definitions and uses of the concept (as in the Unit 3 Assignment) taken from the nursing literature.Your own definition of the concept, as if you are preparing it to submit to your workplace as a needed refinement (why you have modified the definition). Develop this from your reading and the organization’s definition. In other words, modify it as you would like to see it developed into the framework and organizational structure of the facility by specifically identifying your redefinition and explaining why you feel the definition of the concept should be modified. How this concept s your professional practice model. Be sure to specifically identify by name your facility’s professional practice model or provide a framework that would represent the philosophy of nursing within your facility, such as Watson’s Caring model. Use 4–6 nursing scholarly sources to your definitions.Use the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed.) to cite in text and your reference list.Your Assignment must be 4–6 pages, and should include a title page and reference page (in addition to the 4–6 pages for the Assignment).Unit 5 Assignment: Concept Usage Unit 5.docx Maybe some of this info can help. If you need anything else please let me know. thank you! attachment_1Unformatted Attachment PreviewUnit 5 Models of Nursing Care In this unit, you will examine Florence Nightingale, Jean Watson’s Caring Model, Patricia Benner’s From Novice to Expert, and Katie Eriksson. You will also look at a few of the Grand Nursing Theorists, such as Dorothea Orem, Imogene King, and Dorothy Johnson. In examining these nursing models, you will attempt to discern the most important features and levels of abstraction, as well as determine the appropriateness of the application of a model or a theory to a particular setting. Dorothy Johnson Although Dorothy Johnson did not have a
  • 2. graduate degree in nursing (her master’s degree was in public health), she was the top student in her nursing class when she graduated from Vanderbilt School of Nursing in 1942. Johnson was faculty at Vanderbilt, but had the distinction of developing, with Lulu Hassenplug, the first 4-year generic basic nursing course in the United States. She joined the staff of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1949. One of her more renowned writings, “One Conceptual Model of Nursing” (1968), is considered a classic in nursing literature. Two particularly striking comments include her statement that “…we [nurses] may contribute to the achievement of medicine’s goals by fulfilling our own mission” (Johnson, 1968, p. 9) in relation to working with physicians, and her remarks on the need for a unified approach to nursing education: “the variations in our conceptions have led us to considerable variation in word and deed…and often to conflict and disorganization. Only explication of our thoughts and open discussion are likely to lead us to greater unity and to greater service to society” (p. 9). Imogene King Dr. King received her initial nursing education in a diploma nursing program and then obtained a baccalaureate degree in nursing, a master’s degree in nursing, and a doctorate in education from Teachers College at Columbia University in New York. Unit 5 Assignment: Concept UsageShe is currently professor emeritus at the University of South Florida and still very active in her nursing career, serving as a member of the Code of Nursing Ethics taskforce in the American Nursing Association. She is considered one of the original nursing theorists and has achieved international recognition for her Theory of Goal Attainment. (King, 1971; 1981). Dr. King writes that, as a child, she “learned that goal-setting helped us make positive decisions in our journey through life. We were taught at home to look at the consequences of our decisions before finalizing plans” (King, 2001, p. 276). She believed these early childhood values helped her to frame her theory. She has considerable popularity internationally as a nursing consultant, working with nurses in China, Germany, Japan, Canada, Africa, Sweden, and Denmark in helping establish good practice patterns and applying solid nursing theories and models within their workplaces. Dorothea Orem Dorothea Orem is one of nursing’s eminent theorists, having developed a widely recognized model of nursing care. In nursing, there are both theories of care and models of care, each developed to assist in some aspect of nursing care delivery. Orem’s model is called the Self- Care Framework. In it, she postulates that people meet their own needs through their own deliberate actions unless they become ill. If that happens, nurses need to respond to those needs and assist people in meeting their own care or self-care — hence the name Self-Care Framework (Orem, 1991). Orem obtained her baccalaureate degree in nursing in 1939 and an MSN in 1946, both from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. She worked diligently to craft a definition of nursing during a time when she was a nursing consultant to the Division of Hospital and Institutional Services of the Indiana State Board of Health (Fawcett, 2005), and her work in this area led her to develop her framework for nursing care. Orem considered her Self-Care Deficit Theory “knowledge that is both theoretical and practical. This knowledge is a part of and foundation for continuing development of the practice science of nursing. The theory’s conceptual constructs articulate with facts and points of theory from other fields thus indicating areas of need for development….” (Orem, 1993, p.2). Born in 1915, she continues to work with and refine her theory. Defining Critical Attributes,
  • 3. Antecedents, and Consequences as the Next Step in the Concept Analysis Process In readings related to your concept, you will have seen that some characteristics appear over and over again. Unit 5 Assignment: Concept UsageThese characteristics are called the defining or critical attributes and help to distinguish between your concept and another that might be similar. The list may change as your knowledge and understanding of the concept grows. You may also have come across antecedents of your concept in your readings. Antecedents are those events or incidents that must occur prior to the occurrence of the concept. A good example from Walker and Avant (1995) is the antecedents of role strain: role conflict, role accumulation, rigidity of time and place, which role demands must be met, and the amount of activity required by the role. In general, when antecedents are present, the concept is expected to occur. Consequences are events or incidents that occur as a result of an episode of the concept (1995). An example from Rew (1986) is that one possible consequence of intuition is knowledge; another would be discovery. Putting antecedents and consequences together in a concrete example, Cowles (1996) stated that the concept of grief has an antecedent of loss and a consequence of establishment of a new reality or new identity. These are not all of the possible antecedents or consequences, just some brief examples to help your understanding. References Cowles, K. V. (1996).
