Unit 2: Communication Skills for Creative Media Production
Type of Source: Walter Murch (2001) ‘In the Blink of an
Eye’ 2nd Edition. Los Angeles, Silman-
James Press. ISBN: 1-879505-62-2
Select: Purpose Walter Murch is an experience film
editor who has worked in the film
industry for many years. From his
experience he has learnt where and
when to make a cut in a piece of film
but also the reason for it.
Review: Discuss the relevance and
suitability
In the chapter called ‘The Rule of Six’
Murch talks about how emotion is the
most important reasons for a cut. The
main reasons for the cut is when the
editor will ask ‘how do you want the
audience to feel?’ And as he also says at
with how the audience reacts to the
cut. This answers a main point to why
editing is important but also the
purpose for it.
Describe how it will be used in final
Assignment
By looking at the rule of six for the
purpose behind editing but also why
in-camera editing can be useful but
also gives reasons why it sometimes
isn’t.
Unit 2: Communication Skills for Creative Media Production
Type of Source: The Cutting Edge: The Magic of Movie
Editing (2004) Directed by: Wendy
Apple
Select: Purpose This documentary contains the
opinions and information behind why
cuts were made in films and the people
who worked on them example why
their did this and how it has changed
how they edit in the future. It features
a range of different directors, editors
and producer about the relationship
between each member of the team and
how that relationship helps to improve
and develop a film.
Review: Discuss the relevance and
suitability
The whole documentary gives a range
of different examples in different styles
of editing but it also examples how
editing has changed over the years
from film and splicing to the more
digital age. It also gives the thought of
those who are working in the fast pace
film industry as it changes as new
techniques are created and technology
improves. But it also gives their view
on how this fast pace of editing might
not be good for the film and can people
can miss out on important information
in the storylines that they are trying to
create.
Describe how it will be used in final
Assignment
In the documentary, it speaks about
the time when editors weren’t seen as
important in the film industry as their
work was classed as the ‘Invisible Art’
they too weren’t meant to be seen by
the public. This piece of information is
important in how the film industry has
started to see that to get a good film
they need a good editor.

Talk. Hartlepool Sixth Form College,
Lecture theatre, 5th October 2015
Select: Purpose Tony Edwards has worked for the BBC
as a director of documentaries. He is
experienced in the field because of this
and knows how much work needs to
go into the before and after filming.
Review: Discuss the relevance and
suitability
From a director’s point of view the
planning is the most important thing
when creating any piece of film. 70% of
the film should have been planned
before the cameras start rolling as in
early film production before digital,
directors had to plan each scene very
clearly so they wouldn’t waste film
however as the film industry moved to
digital move scenes can be created
during filming allowing the script to be
changed more and scenes to be redone
to change the meaning of the scene or
to work on a characters story.
Describe how it will be used in final
Assignment
I used this source as more of an
understanding of the film industry, by
using this to explain more to me the
importance of a target audience when
editing.

Select: Purpose This webpage is a reference guide to
the college film and media studies,
highlighting the words used in these
two subjects and explain them in a
detailed manner along with examples
from different films through the years.
Review: Discuss the relevance and
suitability
This page helped when I was trying t
understand key terms in the work and
then by using examples made sense
and more understand in what the term
looked like in action. Also this has
helped to understand why different
shots were filmed in the correct colour
tones as the one before and then how
lining a shot incorrectly could make the
scene unusable. This page also makes a
argument of how important lining up a
shot in the correct way can help create
tension or drama to a film.
Describe how it will be used in final
Assignment
I used this page to help me understand
some of the key terms and with
watching the examples, helped me find
my own in other films.

Select: Purpose The early pioneers of the film industry
helped shape the modern industry we
know today. By their work held small
pieces of the parts that turned into the
film industry. By learning about these
pioneers, it makes me think about how
quickly the industry has changed in
such a short time from the first film
being only one take to the thousands of
take that make up the modern films
today. These pioneers created the first
building blocks of the modern day film
industry.
Review: Discuss the relevance and
suitability
I used this page to help me understand
what each of the pioneers did but also
work out which of the many pioneers I
think were the most important to the
industry.
Describe how it will be used in final
Assignment
I used this page only to help me explain
what the pioneers did in more detail
and helped me chose which of the
pioneers I would write about in more
detail and how it linked to the terms
used in editing and filing.

2009
Select: Purpose This article from The Observer is from
Sally Menke who is an editor and talks
about working with Quentin Tarantion.
She speaks about the private
relationship between the editor and
director in more detail and says that it
some times can be a hard relationship
due to the different style of the editor
and the director in where to cut.
Review: Discuss the relevance and
suitability
This article helped by explaining the
relationship between the two main
people in creating a film. They need to
work together to create the film that
they both want however this isn’t with
out problems. Sometimes the director
wants to edit in a different fashion to
the editor and this can cause problems
for them both however somehow they
can work together to create what they
are both looking for in their film. But
also makes the point that each editor is
different when working on a film as
they all have their own style.
Describe how it will be used in final
Assignment
This article I used on how I could bring
across how the editor is important in
the film industry but also how some
editors work and their own style of
editing which makes their films
different to other editors – this ties into
the early pioneers like the French New
Wave.

editors’ role and skill is an invisible art,
which is something that has been
mentioned before. Also it states that an
editor’s job is similar to other roles on
the film crew however they don’t do
that role but needs to have the same
mind set. This wording makes the
editor sound the most important
person on the film however that is the
opposite of what editors started out on.
Review: Discuss the relevance and
suitability
This article helped on understanding
that the work that editors are doing to
place a scene but also how now the
editors is seen as a role instead of
something that was kept secret from
the public eye.
Describe how it will be used in final
Assignment
I used this article as extra information
about what the role of the editor is
about along with using other sources.
