Today’s Routine
 Sail UP the Nile River , visit various monuments, and
learn about a pharaoh’s achievements and why they
built the monument.
 ADV: Fill out a “Report Card” for each pharaoh in the
following areas: expansion, trade and wealth, building,
support of religion, and fairness as you read articles on
each pharaoh
 Standard: Create “Who Am I?” Riddles

once surrounded by

Who is Queen
Hatsheptsut?
 Ruled from 1473 BC to 1458 BC
 Was Egypt’s first female pharaoh
 Encouraged trade, art, and architecture
 Wore men’s clothing and even a fake beard to earn the
respect and confidence of her subjects
 Largest trade expedition was to Punt where 200 men
made a voyage loaded with Egyptian goods
 Built her own temple, the Temple of Pakhet,
thousands of statues, and added monuments to other
temples
2nd Stop: Karnak Temple Festival
Hall of Thutmose III
• Thutmose III named it the “Most Splendid of Monuments” and is part of the
Temple of Karnak.
• Entrance was originally flanked by two statues of the king wearing a festival
costume.
• Roof is supported on the outside by thirty-two square pillars, while the inside
is supported by tent pole style columns symbolizing the military tent that
Thutmose would have used on campaign.
• Used water clocks inside to determine the right time to perform religious
ceremonies at night

 Expanded Egypt’s territory north to Mesopotamia and

 Captured 350 different cities under his leadership
 Empire grew wealthy

conquered people

destroyed because it was
built quickly with cheaper
materials
• Built to honor new

Who is Amenhotep IV?
 Took the throne in 1370 BC
 Believed Egypt’s priests were too powerful and wealthy so
he started a new religion
 Worshipped only one god, Aton the sun god
 Removed priests from posts, took land away from them,
and closed temples
 Changed his name to Akhenaton “Spirit of Aton”
 Most Egyptians rejected the new religion and were
unhappy with his rule
 Many territories in western Asia were lost during his reign
4th Stop: Luxor, Valley of the Kings
at King Tut’s Tomb
• The golden sarcophagus of King Tut is shown here
• Howard Carter discovered this tomb in 1922
• Inside lay a sarcophagus with three coffins nested inside one another. The last
coffin, made of solid gold, contained the mummified body of King Tut.
• Among the riches found in the tomb–golden shrines, jewelry, statues, a chariot,
weapons
• The exhibition’s permanent home is the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

 Son of Amenhotep IV
 Took throne at 10 years old and relied on advice from
officials to rule
 Restored the old religion
 Died 9 years later
 Famous for the discovery of his tomb and its treasures
 Did very little that had historical importance

The Great Temple of Ramses II
Stats:
• Built on the bank of Lake Nasser
• Commemorates his accomplishments as
pharaoh, intimidated Nubian neighbors, and
reinforced Egyptian religion
• Took 20 years to build
• Reflects Ramses’ ego and pride
• Entrance flanked by 4 statues of Ramses
• Inside features statues of gods and battle
scenes from Ramses’ reign

Who is Ramses II?
 Ruled from 1290 BC to 1224 BC
 Reigned for more than 60 years
 Had over 100 wives and over 100 children (oh my!)
 Was a soldier since 10 years old
 Brilliant military leader who regained land in western
Asia and protected Egypt against the Hittites
 Formed the first peace treaty in history with Hittites
 Built more temples and monuments than any other
pharaoh (restored the Sphinx, finished the Temple of
Karnak, and his own temple)

Standard WIO: Who Am I? Riddles
For each of the 5 pharaohs, write a “Who Am I” riddle.
When you’ve finished, switch notebooks with your
partner and try to answer theirs while they answer yours.
Here’s an example: “I am the pharaoh who drove out the
Hyksos at the end of the Middle Kngdom. Who am I?”

 Not much is known about what he was like
 Most describe him as a cruel and harsh ruler, but some say
he was kind and fair.
 Established the position of pharaoh as the central authority
 Sent trade expeditions to places like Byblos to gain precious
metals
 Built the Great Pyramid
 Organized and fed the many workers of the pyramid

Who is Amenhotep IV?  Took the throne in 1370 BC  Believed Egypt’s priests were too powerful and wealthy so he started a new religion  Worshipped only one god, Aton the sun god  Removed priests from posts, took land away from them, and closed temples  Changed his name to Akhenaton “Spirit of Aton”  Most Egyptians rejected the new religion and were unhappy with his rule  Many territories in western Asia were lost during his reign
  • 15. 4th Stop: Luxor, Valley of the Kings at King Tut’s Tomb • The golden sarcophagus of King Tut is shown here • Howard Carter discovered this tomb in 1922 • Inside lay a sarcophagus with three coffins nested inside one another. The last coffin, made of solid gold, contained the mummified body of King Tut. • Among the riches found in the tomb–golden shrines, jewelry, statues, a chariot, weapons • The exhibition’s permanent home is the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

Who is Ramses II?  Ruled from 1290 BC to 1224 BC  Reigned for more than 60 years  Had over 100 wives and over 100 children (oh my!)  Was a soldier since 10 years old  Brilliant military leader who regained land in western Asia and protected Egypt against the Hittites  Formed the first peace treaty in history with Hittites  Built more temples and monuments than any other pharaoh (restored the Sphinx, finished the Temple of Karnak, and his own temple)
