In this presentation I am going to talk about 4
key art styles found in games:
- Photorealism (3 examples)
- Cel shading (3 examples)
- Abstract (3 examples)
- Exaggeration (3 examples)
For each style you need to find 3 games that use this
art style (One slide per game). You will need to talk
about how the art style sets the tone, theme and feel
of the game. What impact does it have on the mood?
(Think about Call of Duty being a photorealistic game
– why would they use that art style? What impact
does it have on the target audience for that game?)
UNIT 13: ASSIGNMENT 2
In the visual arts, color theory is a body
of practical guidance to color mixing and
the visual effects of a specific color
combination. The way you do this is by
mixing colors of the same group.
You would do this by using the color
wheel.
COLOR THEORY
Graphic style
In this presentation I will be discussing different graphical styles and
the advantages and examples of each, the four styles I will be looking
at is ; photorealism, cel shading, abstraction and exaggeration.
Definitions :
Cel shading or toon shading is a type of non-photorealistic rendering
designed to make computer graphics appear to be hand-drawn.
Photorealism a style of art and sculpture characterized by the highly
detailed depiction of ordinary life with the impersonality of a
photograph
abstractionism an abstract genre of art; artistic content depends on
internal form rather than pictorial representation
Exaggeration is a representation of something in an excessive
manner
colour perception / effect of colour
Color vision or color vision is the ability of an organism or machine to distinguish objects
based on the wavelengths (or frequencies) of the light they reflect, emit, or transmit. Colors
can be measured and quantified in various ways; indeed, a human's perception of colors is a
subjective process whereby the brain responds to the stimuli that are produced when
incoming light reacts with the several types of cone photoreceptors in the eye. In essence,
different people see the same illuminated object or light source in different ways.
/How colour effects the user?
In video games the makers use dark colours to portray a scary atmosphere or that the
character (subject) is in danger and the bright surroundings indicates the character is safe.
Dark = Scary
Bright = Good atmosphere
style and exaggeration used in games
How is exaggeration used in games?
Exaggeration is used in games, mostly in RPGs and arcade games,
this art style is used for animé and manga typically, this art style is
where the artist exaggerates many things within the game, mostly
games with a Japanese influence
How is style used in games?
Style is used in the games to set the theme and the genre of the
game, so a game that is simple in style is most likely
Photorealism example 1
Call of duty Black ops 2:
Call of Duty: Black Ops II is a 2012 first-person
shooter video game, developed by Treyarch
and published by Activision (Square Enix for Japan). It was released
on November 13, 2012 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft
Windows and on November 18, 2012 in North America, November 30,
2012 in Europe and Australia for the Wii U.
Photorealism example 2
Battlefield 3:
Battlefield 3 is a first-person shooter video game developed by EA
Digital Illusions CE and published by Electronic Arts. It is a direct
sequel to 2005's Battlefield 2, and the eleventh instalment in the
Battlefield franchise. Battlefield has since received the most online
players consistently.
Photorealism example 3
Assassins creed black flag :
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is a 2013 historical
action-adventure open world video game developed by Ubisoft
Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It was released worldwide for
the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on October 29, 2013; for the Wii U on
October 29, 2013 in North America, on November 21, 2013 in Australia,
on November 22, 2013 in Europe
Evaluation of photorealism:
The main thing that attracts gamers to the game is the graphics, so
by making everything look as full of life as it can be would be the best
thing to do. The faces of the characters personifies them and that
makes it appeal to its target audience. I have also noticed that most
of the games that use photorealism are 18+ games. They use this so it
would appeal to its target market.
Cel shading game example 1:
Dragon ball z budokai 3 :
The Budokai series plays like a typical 3-D fighting game.
As well as including the regular punch and kick buttons,
there is the ability to shoot Ki blasts, which can also be used in
specific special moves. The special moves are mainly taken from
individual characters own special moves from the show; including,
but not limited to, Goku's Kamehameha, Vegeta's Galick Gun and
Frieza's Death Beam.
Cel shading game example 2:
Naruto ultimate ninja storm 3 :
Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 3, known in
Japan as Naruto Shippūden: Narutimate Storm 3
(NARUTO-ナルト- 疾風伝 ナルティメットストーム3?) is a fighting game
developed by CyberConnect2 as part of the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja
video game series which is based on the successful Naruto manga by
Masashi Kishimoto. It was released by Namco Bandai Games on
March 5, 2013 in North America and March 8, 2013 in Europe. It was
released on April 18, 2013 in Japan
Cel shading game example 3:
Avatar the last air bender:
Avatar: The Last Airbender (Avatar: The Legend of Aang in some
regions) is an American animated television series that aired for three
seasons on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. The series was created
and produced by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, who
served as executive producers along with Aaron Ehasz. Avatar: The
Last Airbender is set in an Asian influenced world
Evaluation of cel shading:
The good thing about cel shading is that it makes the players of the
game feel closer to the experience, because most games that use cel
shading have been a manga or cartoon. So the players would be
more used to this other than other art styles like photorealism. It
would be easier artistically to make characters using cel shading.
Abstract game example 1
Geometry wars
Geometry Wars is a minigame created by Bizarre Creations as part of
Project Gotham Racing 2 for the Xbox, accessible through the in-
game garage. An updated version of the game, Geometry Wars:
Retro Evolved, is available for download on the Xbox 360 via Xbox
Live Arcade. It can also be played in demo form in Project Gotham
Racing 3
Abstract game example 2
World of goo
World of Goo is a physics-based puzzle video game by 2D Boy, an
independent game developer consisting of Kyle Gabler and Ron
Carmel, both former Electronic Arts employees, released for
Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS, Android, BlackBerry 10 and
WiiWare It was nominated for the Seumas McNally grand prize,
Design Innovation Award, and Technical Excellence at the
Independent Games Festival, and has gone on to win several other
gaming awards since its release
Abstract game evaluation 3
The unfinished swan
The Unfinished Swan is a video game developed by Giant Sparrow for
the PlayStation 3 and which is distributed on the PlayStation
Network. The game starts with a completely white space in which
the player, a boy named Monroe, is chasing after a swan that has
escaped a painting
Evaluation of abstract:
Abstract games are games that have no specific purpose because
there is no stories behind the game. Many abstract games are also
educational games.
Exaggeration game example 1:
Super Mario
The Super Mario video game series is a series of platform video
games created by Nintendo featuring their mascot, Mario.
Alternatively called the Super Mario Bros. series or simply the Mario
series, it is the central series of the greater Mario franchise+
Exaggeration game example 2:
Final fantasy 7
Final Fantasy VII is a role-playing video game developed by Square
(now Square Enix) as the seventh instalment in the Final Fantasy
series. It was released in 1997 for the Sony PlayStation, in 1998 for
Microsoft Windows-based personal computers, in 2009 on the
PlayStation Network, in 2012 on PC Digital Download, and in 2013 on
Steam.
Exaggeration game example 3:
Alice in the wonderland
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (commonly shortened to Alice in
Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles
Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a
girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world
populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays
with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as
with children.
Evaluation of exaggeration:
Exaggeration is most commonly used in games that are of cartoon,
they make the characters look taller than they could possibly be or
something along them lines.

You will need to talk about how the art style sets the tone, theme and feel of the game. What impact does it have on the mood? (Think about Call of Duty being a photorealistic game – why would they use that art style? What impact does it have on the target audience for that game?) UNIT 13: ASSIGNMENT 2

Colors can be measured and quantified in various ways; indeed, a human's perception of colors is a subjective process whereby the brain responds to the stimuli that are produced when incoming light reacts with the several types of cone photoreceptors in the eye. In essence, different people see the same illuminated object or light source in different ways. /How colour effects the user?
