Measuring capacitance
Lab 8 - Measuring capacitance
Capacitors are useful circuit elements because they can store charge. For a capacitor, there is a fundamental relationship between the applied voltage and the amount of charge stored on the capacitor. In this experiment you will measure the charge on a capacitor versus the applied voltage for several values of the applied voltage. A plot of charge vs. applied voltage should form a straight line with a slope equal to the capacitance.
(1)
You will use this relation to measure the capacitance of capacitors with different areas and distances between plates. Then you will verify the relation below using these different values.
(2)
objectives
· Determine the mathematical relationship between charge, applied voltage, and capacitance.
· Determine the capacitance of a capacitor.
· Verify the theoretical formula

Logger Pro or Excel
PRELIMINARY SEtup (done in lab)
Do the following in your groups, then return to class to discuss to make sure you know how to use site:
1. Go to the following website:
https://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/capacitor-lab-basics
2. Open the capacitor only screen.
3. Play with the controls until you are familiar with how they work. Make sure you can use the voltmeter to measure the potential difference between the plates.
PROCEDURE
You will measure the capacitance for each capacitor using the following protocol. Note that the theoretical value is given to you at the top of the screen----your fit of your data should agree with this value.
1. Set the distance and area to the required values.
2. Position voltmeter to measure potential difference.
3. Repeat the following until you have at least 7 points, starting at 0 and going up in steps of 0.2 V.
a) Set the battery voltage to required value.
b) record voltage and charge in first data table.
4. When complete, use Excel or LoggerPro to plot a graph between Q (Y axis) and V (X axis) and do linear curve fitting and determine slope. The slope is C (Cs). Remember to use SI units when plotting! Include all plots with fits in lab report.
5. You will repeat the above for three values of A and d. These values will be given to you by your professor. When you complete this task, fill out the second data table.
6. You will also calculate value of C (Cc) from equation 2.
7. Find percent error between three values of C as shown in the table 2.

Essay 1: Narrative Argument Grading Rubric
Essential Requirements for Grading:
The next two columns refer to the deviation scores squared, since summing up deviation scores always equals zero and is of no use when determining variance.
Again, can you complete the cells for the last two employees?
Finally, the last column refers to the product of multiplying the deviation of X by the deviation of Y shown here as xy. Again, fill in the last two rows to check your understanding.
Now we are ready to calculate our correlation, r.
The following general categories indicate a quick way of interpreting a calculated r value (+ or –):
· 0.0 to 0.2: very weak to negligible correlation
· 0.2 to 0.4: weak, low correlation (not very significant)
· 0.4 to 0.7: moderate correlation
· 0.7 to 0.9: strong, high correlation
· 0.9 to 1.0: very strong correlation
Using the above guide the consulting psychologist would advise the human resource manager to conclude there is a weak relationship between years of employment and pay raises, and that the relationship is positive.
Caution must be exercised at this juncture as the relationship determined cannot as of yet be considered statistically significant.
Knowing that the situation included 10 individuals (N = 10: number of participants and degrees of freedom equal N – 2: two variables) to determine whether the results are statistically significant one must go to a "r" value table and determine what value is needed for statistical significance. In this case where the degrees of freedom are 8 (N – 2), the required r value at the probability level of 0.05 is +/- 0.549. The obtained r value in this case of + 0.36 is less than the required r value; therefore, the relationship is not statistically significant at the 0.05 probability level. Further, the consulting psychologist can conclude as well that the null hypothesis is accepted, and the relationship was most likely due to chance factors.
The same data cited above can be placed in the raw score formula, and the exact same r value will result. Note: Should an r value exceed +/– 1.0, the conclusion drawn is simply that a mathematical mistake has been made in the calculation process.
Post a behavioral research situation that could use a Pearson coefficient research study and a chi square research study. Present the rationale for each selection. Be very specific in your presentation.

Writing Tips:
—MLA or APA format required: quotes and paraphrasing need page numbers APA: (Smith, 2000, p. 235). MLA (Smith 235). Quotes are best. Avoid footnotes in any form, or the Chicago style of citation.
—State your thesis at the end of Paragraph 1 -- what will you claim?--Include a copy of small image as an Appendix after your Works Cited, if you analyze an ad or other visual item you want me to see (if I haven't likely seen it).
"Quote" if you can. Paraphrase secondarily. Introduce/integrate quotes. As Smith suggests, “Ads are a system...” that can “educate us...” (Smith, 2005, p. 5)
Quotes cannot stand alone.
Begin each paragraph with a topic sentence and address that topic. The topic sentence tells readers what the topic is. For example: “Historically, ads were outdoors...” OR you can use a question “How did we move from a needs society to a wants society?...”
Use transitions between paragraphs. “But Farnsworth was not only the creator of TV, he also…”
Block quotes (more than 3 full lines) should NOT be used, or only in rare cases when you cannot summarize the gist, and almost never in short papers.

DIGITAL MEDIA. Select 1 Historical or Current Example of Social Media being blamed for a social problem (ex: the cyber bullying of Amanda Todd), and 1 Example of Social Media being credited with improving life (ex: social movements). (See Chapter 2). Many people who examine ‘social media’ (such as Facebook and Twitter) say that these tools distract us from the important things in life. Similar things were said about television, and telephones, and the radio, and even of writing. Any communication technology can be used in a variety of ways, depending on who has access to them, and how creative they are. In your Compare and Contrast Essay, discuss one case or way in which social media get blamed for negative events or outcomes (loneliness, competitiveness, bullying, boasting, narcissism). Compare this side with the positive things people accomplish with social media (MeToo, BLM, organizing events, socializing, reading the day’s news). Give specific examples, and support your claims with research. You may also mention your own experiences, if relevant. For the negative side, a case study may be wise: the Grossman cyber bullying case, for example, or the BC politician who lost an election due to an old Facebook photo. Or you could identify a common criticism of social media, and explore it. For example: Are social media affecting news and political views based on this news today negatively? Examples.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
