- GS1 Ireland is a member organisation of GS1 and like all other Mos, we are a not for profit organisation which is neutral as in we don’t endorse any product or service and also user driven in that we exist to serve the needs of our members. If a member doesn’t come up with a reason to do something, nothing is done. We are essentially Standards facilitators. Our main objective is to progress the development of bar coding, scanning and e-commerce messaging in Ireland. We started in the food sector, and are now involved in every industry sector in Ireland. In recent years Healthcare has become our no.1 development area. 93% of all prescribed medicines in Ireland have a GS1 standard barcode on their packs. We are working with the Dept of Health, HIQUA and the HSE to form new standards in healthcare.

- Barcodes are just keys to unlocking product data. Research has shown that data in all supply chains is well below acceptable standards. Human error is unavoidable, you have heard the saying “garbage in, garbage out”. GS1 through its datapools and eComm initiatives is introducing standards to combat and eliminate bad data in a supply chain. - HSE National Sterile Instrument Tracking Solution The Publication of the HSE’s Recommended Practices for CDU’s, Endoscope Reprocessing Units and Dentists now explicitly recommend the use of GS1 Standards. SJUH – Leading this rollout with all Trays identified and tracked using GS1 Standards Registry of all Healthcare Providers and Locations (GS1 GLN Registry) Asset security, e.g. track & trace Patient safety Traceability and Authentication Reliable basis for patient costing systems (VFM)

- So in Practice, Each location and Van were assigned a GLN, scanned into stock fridge at hospital, scanned out of stock and into the issue fridge upon request. Scanned again upon receipt of prescription to patient then CFC is administered to the patient. All this using the EPC network is event managed for traceability, stock control and electronic patient record.
- GS1 believes that the GS1 Standards can deliver on all of the above for the Irish Health Service as well as ASTM – E1714-07 Standard Guide for the Properties of a Universal Healthcare Identifier
