The Nilgiri Mountain Railway in India recently celebrated its 106th anniversary, relying on its fleet of steam locomotives to transport passengers along a 26 km route through 208 curves, 16 tunnels and 250 bridges. The journey starts at 1,069 feet above sea level and climbs to 7,228 feet using a rack and pinion system, offering beautiful scenery of paddy fields, rocky terrain, tea plantations, and numerous tunnels and viaducts. Though over 100 years the railway has faced challenges like landslides and washed out tracks, authorities have worked hard to restore service and preserve this unique train route.
