Good afternoon everyone!
I’m delighted to be here, thank you very much for inviting me.
Let’s start by introducing myself. My name is Carolina Corral and I work at National Distance Education University at Madrid.
The topic of my presentation is “Uned Library, wherever you are”.
By the end of the speech I hope you´ll know the mission of our library and how we’ve become an example to follow for others institutions in terms of information literacy.
I have divided my presentation into three main parts:
First of all, I’ll show you the importance of our University in easing access to everybody to University, wherever they are.
Second, I’ll explain the structure, processes and services of our library.
Finally, I’ll tell you what I consider our best value: the information literacy program.
We´re the largest Spanish University,
but do you know that UNED was the first University created in the Republic of Guinea?
National Distance Education University was founded in 1972 to ease access to everyone at University, no matter where they are.
So this is the mission for which it was created in 1972: to ease access to everyone at University, they are.
To achieve this goal UNED offers blended learning methodoly. It combines online digital media and traditional classroom methods in “Associated Centers”.
We’re present not only all over Spain but also in Europe, Latina America and Africa.
UNED also offers special programs for disabled people (there are more than 6.000 students in this special program) and for people in risk of social exclusion, as students in prison.
Let’s have a look at the largest university in Spain, UNED. This slide shows some significant figures for 2017.
UNED manages a budget of 227 millions of euros and employs about 10.000 people
Our total number of Students was almost 250.000. We’re the largest university in Spain in terms of number of students.
And we offer these qualifications: 28 degrees; 76 masters; 19 doctorate; over 600 training programs.
We have a TV channel and a University Center of Distance Languages, that offers instruction in 15 languages.
According to the mission of the University our library is present throughout the national territory in Spain and in centers abroad.
It is a library with a centralized and unified structure in their librarian management, processes, services and standard procedures policy.
We`re integrated by:
- The Main Central Library, that support the central services and network.
- The north Campus Library, specialized in Psychology, Education and Engineering.
- And 88 libraries in Associated centers.
We´re 82 employees in the main Library.
Most of us participate in internal work groups, as Collection Management, internal communication, cultural activities, and the sostenibility library.
250.000 is the number of Students that we have disseminated for all over the world. We try to reach all the students wherever they are, face to face by these centers, and whenever this is not possible by online digital media.
In relation to this let me remark our presence at social media.
Our account in Facebook is in third position in Spain.
Our account in Twitter is the second in terms of followers.
Since June we have and active account in Instagram and we also maintain a channel in Youtube. Some of our videos exceed the figure of 100.000 views.
This leads directly to the last point of the presentation, the information literacy program
We teach information literacy in 10 degrees, 20 masters and 19 doctorate programs.
We improve our teaching contents recording videolessons that are uploaded in or channel in Youtube in open access.
We follow a distance learning methodology or web-based instruction. We use Alf, a Learning Content Management, a software created by the University computer technicians.
The tutoring of the courses is also virtual, by the forum o by email.
For the assessment of the students two methods are followed: they are assessed through different activities or exams and by themselves.
Let´s take as example the activities taught in Doctorates Programs.
The goal of this activities es to train students in the solvent use of information and in the dissemination of their research.
The activities are: one course divided into 6 modules, with exams, practices and sel-evaluating activities.
And recorded workshops to which they can assist in person and web conferencing.
These are the modules that are part of the basic Information Literacy Course.
There are another adevanced course with another 4 modules.
This point takes me to the end of the talk.
To briefly summarize, our library combine online digital media and traditional methods, to reach each student, wherever they are.
This way the library try to achieve the same goal as the University: to ease access to everybody at University, no matter where they are or what is their physical or social situation.
Thank you very much for your attention and now I’ll be happy to answer any question you may have.
