Undertale Essay
Game Analysis: Undertale (2015)
In Undertale the combat system is very unique in comparison to other games by being a mix of a
Shoot 'em up game and a turn based RPG. Once a player enters combat through a random encounter
in the overworld they are greeted with a screen showing the enemies sprite and at the bottom of the
screen 4 different options for them to pick; fight, act, item and mercy. Once it is the enemy's turn to
attack the player A box will appear with a player controlled heart symbol in the centre, then different
things will appear in the box that the player must avoid or they will take damage. If the player
chooses the "fight" command they will be shown a bar at the bottom of the screen with a bar
moving across the screen. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The game has a simple pixel art style which works quite well as it is meant to resemble a game that
would be for the NES or SNES. The characters in battle are always in black and white with a simple
black background which as a design choice works quite well as it doesn't distract the player from
dodging the enemies attacks and makes sure there's no way they can mistake any background
element for an attack they must dodge.
The enemy designs in the game are very unique and interesting, often representing some kind of
character trope, for example there is an enemy in the game named "Aaron" that is a horse with a
mermaid's tail that is obsessed with his muscles. When Aaron attacks the player, the player must
move out of the way from 2 arms on the side of the box that come up from the bottom. Every
monster in the game has specialised attacks like this, for example there is an enemy that has an
obsession with cleaning and his attack is water droplets flowing out from the middle of the screen
that the player has to avoid. This is a good design decision as it adds depth and intrigue to the
characters in an extremely simple way which will make the player interested to see what other
attacks the monsters

The Benefits Of Video Games On Children
Video game and the benefit it has on children Since the turn of the Millennium, Video game began
to solidify itself as a leading source of entertainment and as a result it also became widely criticized
and many parents began to restricted children from having any access to video games. Parents
shouldn't restrict Children's access to Video games since those who have played video games has
been shown to many positive impacts on their lives. Studies have shown that children who play
video games have a better mental capability than Children who don't play video games. Plus,
different genres of video games are shown to have different effects on children such as
improvements in spatial skills and some can even reduce obesity. Video games have also been
shown to improve a children's education such as having higher test scores and improvement in
vocabulary. Any effects video game causes can be reversed if needed yet any skills that a child gain
would be beneficial in the digital age they are growing up in. Even as more and more kids are
playing more video games there are always going to be those few kids who don't play video games,
mainly because parents will either listen or read critics about video games, such as brain damage or
eyesight damage, and will refuse to allow their children to play them. But studies are showing that
when compared to children who don't play video games children who do play video games are
shown to have a better mental capability. Research such as the

Aspects of a Good Game
Games have been enjoyed for generations, whether they are board games, computer games or
console games. However, to succeed in making a good game, it must be enjoyable and must include
many different aspects. Through researching, several of the most common and important aspects
that a game should have to include to be a 'good game' have been found. The most regularly
mentioned aspects of what makes a 'good game' are:
Challenge/Reward
Freedom
Experience
Place/Feel
Story
Challenge/Reward
Challenge should be implemented in every game to make it more exciting and engage the player
more. They should not be impossible although should be difficult enough to make the player think
and construct a strategy or method to surpass them. Challenge should often come with a reward for
completing them so that the player will feel more motivated to complete them.
Rather than just points, money etc. as rewards; rewards such as new abilities, a new part of the map
to explore, a new item or even a new task can be given. These rewards are motivating and also help
to keep the player enjoying the game through side quests/challenges, instead of just playing the
game to win.
Freedom
Freedom includes the range of different choices and paths that can be made to complete an
objective. For example, going through the front door can attract a lot of attention while the side door
will not. You can choose whether you want a huge gunfight between you and the enemy or rather
take a stealthy approach.

Video Games Do More Than Entertain

Video Games do more than entertain
"Fully 72% of all teens play video games on a computer, game console or portable device like a
cellphone, and 81% of teens have or have access to a game console." (Lenhart 1) When most people
read this, they might assume it is a bad statistic and something that needs to be lowered, however it
actually has many positive attributes that usually go unreported. The positive effects of video games
outweigh the negatives in the bigger picture. Video games help to develop the social skills that
people think teens lose nowadays. Teenagers who do play video games do better in school than
those who do not. They are the most beneficial form of entertainment there is. Not all digital media
should be seen as a group of items that go hand in hand. Digital media consists of useful tools that
can be, with proper facilitation, used to young society's advantage. Every form of entertainment
provides us with something, whether it be just a time killer or a couple of laughs, video games
however, provide us with the potential to experience more than just sitting and watching something.
Video games can be the most beneficial form of entertainment there is. When compared to
something like watching a TV show, completing a video games takes up less time as well as
provides more mental stimulation. A person does not watch a game, they play it, they have to
interact with it and figure out ways to

Persuasive Essay On Sports
Imagine a world without competition. Imagine a world where every student that couldn't solve a
simple math equation was accepted into an Ivy League school such as Harvard, or Yale. That
wouldn't be very safe now, would it? The student that we were counting on to create the "next best"
medical technology had no idea what they were doing because the only reason they got into the
school was that the dean "didn't want to hurt anybody's feelings." Although this is a far stretch, this
is the reality people like Satasky in "Children Need to Play, Not Compete" wish could come true in
today's children's sports. Playing sports for 15 years of my life and competing competitively for 11
of them have done nothing but good for me. Obviously, there have been hardships such trying my
best to juggle sports and my many other obligations without letting any of them fall beneath the
other, but I did it, and I owe it all to the many years of playing. Although children's sports are
becoming increasingly competitive, their parents are playing a major role in the risk of injury and
other mental hardships, such as their child being discouraged if they don't make the cut. However,
the values the children learn by playing competitively such as perseverance and the opportunities
that they bring upon themselves through hard work outweigh the disadvantages.
With playing a competitive sport at a young age comes great responsibility not only on the child but
the parent's end as well. The underline problem

Causes And Effects Of Video Games
There are many causes and effects on what makes one video game more popular than others. Some
video games become popular for no reason; they become public sensations just because people like
them. However, most popular video games have key features that make them appealing to the
public. One of the most important reasons a video game becomes popular is story. A great game has
an in depth storyline that keeps players on edge and wanting for more. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
is one of the best examples of a great storyline. The fifth installment in a long series of games since
the 1990s, this game has one of the most intricate storylines available to a player. This game has
over 1000 different quests, 15 different joinable factions, and lore that goes beyond the game itself.
Most quests also feature unique characters with voice acting which makes the game feel more
lifelike. The player always has something to do within the realm of Skyrim. Battlefield 1 is another
game with a great storyline. Battlefield 1 is a first person shooter that is set in World War 1. The
story, instead of following a single storyline, goes through several shorter stories. Each small story
allows you to play through the eyes of a different character who is based on actual events. Most
people only think of the German front, but this game allows the player to experience what World
War 1 was like in the Middle East and Italy. The game also allows you to play as a character other
than just a white male.

The Negative Effects Of Video Games
Introduction
Most of the research done on video games tends to be done on the possible negative effects
associated with the medium. From aggression and violence to the connection to mood disorders,
video games tend to get a bad reputation. However, there are studies that have been done about the
possible positive effects of games as well. There are definitely fewer positive studies than negative,
but they are out there for those who search them out. The study that was used by Kendall Ashley in
her article "How Videogames Can Help with Depression and Anxiety", was not one of those studies.
News Article Purpose and Study Fit (250)
The news article by Kendall Ashley, "How Videogames Can Help with Depression and Anxiety",
claimed exactly as its title suggests. The article went into how different types of games, such as
MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role playing games), puzzle games, and games based on
depression supposedly assisted with anxiety and depression. I went into reading this article
favorably, as someone who both enjoys video games and as someone who is diagnosed with anxiety.
However, after comparing what the study said with what the article presented it as, I found myself
disappointed. Ashley either did not understand what the study said or just named dropped the study
to make her article seem more valid. Most of the time when Ashley claims that "Studies show
that..." she is either referring to an uncited study, or straight out lying about the content of

The Effects Of Video Games On A Global Scale
Introduction:
Video games on a global scale have become one of the most lucrative of what is considered "new
media" in today's society. They came from humble beginnings in the form of games such as Pong
and Pacman, games that consisted of limited color and moving dots. Now the gaming industry is
worth billions of dollars. In a recent study conducted by Forbes magazine in 2012, figures showed
that the video game industry was worth an estimated 67 billion dollars and in 2017 it will be worth
an estimated 82 billion dollars (Gaudiosi, 2012). With its rise in popularity as a result of its
technological advancements, video games are one of the top choices among many adolescents as
well as young adults as a form of entertainment. With the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

In a study conducted by Stephen Burgess titled "Video Game Playing and Academic Performance in
College Students". He states that " Students may be able to report studying while watching TV,
whereas playing a video game may require more focused attention" ( pg. 377). With video games
demanding more attention from the player, time is ultimately sacrificed for the perceived self–
gratification of the player.
Recent research showed that heavy video game play had an effect on the ability of the gamer to
manage his/her time effectively. The purpose of this proposed study is to examine the relationship
between video game play and time management skills. First, this current research attempts to
discover whether or not gender plays a role in the relationship between time management and video
game play. It is also to find out the age groups that are most likely to practice poor time
management skills as a result of heavy video game play. Lastly, this proposed research aims to
explore whether or not the relationship between video game play and poor time management skills
is genre specific. Upon completion of this research, a greater and more complete understanding of
the relationship between heavy video game play and time management skills will be attained. The
significance of this study is rooted in the main objective of finding out the direct relationship
between heavy video game play and poor time management skills. After the study is

Online Gaming and Fraud in Massive Multiplayer Online...
1. Online Gaming Security and Fraud Throughout the evolution of gaming, there has been a
movement of large communities to online gaming. With that high amount of traffic, these online
games have become prime targets for crime to emerge from. Due to the online nature and virtual
elements of this kind of community, the most common type of crime committed was theft, followed
closely by fraud (Chen 2005). With the increase in online communities from online gaming,
businesses have started advertising both to these markets and through them. This has opened up not
only the online communities to the threat of fraud, but also those businesses and their competitors.
This paper will focus primarily on the Massive Multiplayer Online Role–Playing Game
(MMORPG) community, and the ways that fraud is committed in that type of gaming. 2.1 Fraud in
MMORPGs Fraud has been influencing MMORPGs and online gaming for years. The world of
online has moved from being a software license industry to an uplink time payment model due to
illegal sharing and software copying (Chen 2005). With the move to subscription based gameplay, in
game items now have a monetary value due to the growth of economies that trade the virtual game
money or items for real world currency (Chen 2005). Throughout the MMORPGs there has been a
trend of criminals targeting the users of these online games for purposes of theft and fraud,
especially when it comes to the in game currencies and identities. According to a study

The Pros And Cons Of Video Games
Many people stand behind the fact that video games do help people and kids in the development of
their brain, while other people do not. The argument based around the idea that video games help
the development of people or not has been going on for a long time. Different stories come up on
how people are getting seriously harmed while playing video games, but there are other stories
coming up about the positives about playing video games. One side believes that playing video
games hinders the development of a child's brain. Also, they believe the more violent video games
we see on the markets today cause children to be violent and lash out on family. On the other side of
the argument though, scientists go deep in to their research on how video games help the
development of the human brain and the positive effects it can have for people long–term. Also, on
the same side of the argument video games can be used for educational purposes. This argument has
valid points on both sides, while they have good reasoning behind them. In the opposition's point of
view, games often lead to poor health for the person playing the game. This comes from the fact that
most games involve sitting in front of the TV ("Eight Ways Video Games Are Bad For Your Health,"
par. 1). Most of the games out on the market today are plain and simple. The user grabs a controller
and sits in front of the TV and begins to play the game. This is all true but, there are games that

Violent Video Games
According to abcnews.go.com, "Ninety–seven percent of young respondents play video games.
That's 99 percent of boys and 94 percent of girls, with little difference in the percentages among
various racial and ethnic groups and incomes." The 7 percent who do not play video games have
access to a gaming console either through friends or family. So is this making children more
violent? Is there a difference in kids who are exposed to different game styles?
A lot of parents believe that if they let their son play Call of Duty at a young age, he will grow up to
be a terrorist. Video games are not that large of an influence on a child's mind, no matter how much
they play. They can, however push them in that direction in life. If a child's surrounds himself with
dark music, gory video games, and inappropriate TV shows and movies it will begin to affect his
attitude and how he handles situations. He will resort the kinds of violence that he used to. The
kinds he see's in the shows he watches and the games he plays.
Forbes.com says that as of 2014, 49.9 percent of video games being played are of the action and
shooter genre. The things kids are putting in their minds are affecting how they go about life. For
example, one of the students responsible for the Columbine High School massacre referred to his
gun as "Arlene." This is a reference to the extremely gory and violent game Doom. This student's
actions were partially influenced by a video game. Though it is not to blame for 100

The Effects Of Playing Games On The Classroom Essay
When I was a teenager, I loved playing games and it was the common interest I shared with my
friends. Yet our interest and enjoyment in gameplay did not always give us pleasant experiences.
Playing games were considered to be waste of times and looked down upon by parents, school
teachers, or even other students. When the events of game related social problems occurred, we had
to overcome severe criticisms from the others. For example, in my middle school, one teacher
criticized students for playing games and blamed them for dropping the average score of the class
when my class ranked last in final exam. Some of the students questioned the logics for his regular
derogation for the game. Rather than educative response or constructive conversation, they were
confronted with the call to the teacher's office and punishment of an apology letter after school. I
was one of the students who had to write ten pages of apology letter. When I finally finished and
went back home, I had a serious conversation with the parents about my friends and our interests in
games. Even though playing games was my favorite activity, it was also a big cause of problems in
my childhood. The fact that my mother does not know to this day that I was a 'Star Craft'
representative of my middle school senior class for the student association tournament.

My Favorite Experience
My childhood was never something that seemed to be a typical boy's childhood. I never watched
sports as kid since the T.V. channel was dictated by my parents so all we watched were shows like
Law & Order, CSI, and Fear Factor. I never learned about cars whatsoever and talking about girls
always perplexed me. I never understood how someone could base their feelings about someone
based off physical appearances, but that could just be because I was very pessimistic and was
always very distant of people in general. Video games are something that I loved to play and was
something I thought would a normal guy thing. While I had played video games, they mainly
consisted of Nintendo games which are generally much more docile than games than what most
guys played, which consisted of first person shooter games such as Halo and Call of Duty. This lead
to awkward moments when trying to have conversations with other guys, especially when I was
going into high school. One hot summer afternoon, one that exemplified the extremes that Kansan
weather can produce, exemplified just how bad these conversations could get. Band camp had
started up and we were learning the basics of marching and practicing the music for our show for
that year. After a while of rehearsing our marching drills, we were told to take a water break to
prevent dehydration in the intense heat. These water breaks also served as a chance for everyone to

Task Switching Behavior
Video games have become one of the most popular forms of entertainment. Video games require
players to manipulate images on a screen. In general, those that play video games experience
improvements in hand–eye coordination. This is logical, considering the quick movements one must
use to complete a video game. Video games also require the player to perform mental processes
similar to those the player would perform in the real world. With this in mind, it is possible that
certain video games can improve mental processes that are exercised within the virtual world.
Studies have investigated if and how driving, action, and puzzle video games improve visual skills

As stated in the study "video gamers outperformed non–gamers in the dual–task situation ts(18)>
3.205, ps<.01," (***). Furthermore, the gamers outperformed nongamers on the task switching
therefore. Interesting enough, there was no significant difference in single–task performance
between the two groups. While these findings seem promising, there is no way to say that the
differences in dual–task and task–switching performances were caused by video game play.
Therefore, the investigators decided to perform another experiment. The purpose of the experiment
was to see if action video games are responsible for the difference in performance on these tests.
The researchers picked two video games for the experiment: Medal of Honor and Tetris. Medal of
Honor is an action video game and Tetris is a puzzle game. It was hypothesized that playing Medal
of Honor would create improvements in the dual–task and task–switching tests while Tetris would
not create an improvement. In the between subjects experiment, 32 college students were randomly
separated into three groups, 10 in the Medal of Honors group, 10 in the Tetris group, and 12 in the
control group, whom were not exposed to any video games. The experiment consisted of a pretest,
conditioning trials, and a posttest. During the pretest, all three groups were took the dual–task and
the task–switching tests. After the tests, the two experimental groups practiced their respective video
games in 15 one–hour sessions over four weeks. The control group did not practice either video
game. Finally, the three groups retook the two tests, and the difference in performance was found.
The independent variable of the experiment was video game, with the levels being Medal of Honor,

Violent Video Games Cause Violent Crime
The most frequently asked question in recent years is, do violent video games lead to violent crime?
Most people would think that the answer is a simple yes or no answer, but it's not. This type of
correlation is not all black and white; there is a lot of misconception and misunderstanding about it.
In this paper, I will be discussing the history of violent video games. I will include scientific studies
done on violent video games. I will include various crime cases involving video games. I will
discuss the effects of violent video games. Lastly, I will give possible solutions to prevent violent
crime from happening. There is a lot of history when it comes to video games and violent video
games, but the earliest violent video games have been around since the 1970s. In 1976, Death Race
was the first video game criticized for its violence. The goal of this game was to run over human–
like creatures known as gremlins that made an unrealistic human screaming sound when struck.
Since the 1970s, everything has gone downhill. In the 1980s, beloved games we know today like
Pac–Man and Super Mario Bros faced criticism for their cartoon violence. This is because of Pac–
Man killing the ghosts and Mario attacking various enemies to achieve his goal to get to the next
level. One of the first graphic violent video games is Mortal Kombat; this game is a one–on–one
fighting game where realistic human characters usually fight to the death. Soon Mortal Kombat was

Pros And Cons Of Violent Video Games
Violent Video Games Need More Restriction There is no doubt that violent media, in any form is
more accessible today than it ever has been in the past. Why is nothing being done to make sure
these things don't fall into the hands of the wrong people, mainly children. Anyone who has played
competitive online first person shooters has come across the 10 or 11 year old little kid, that should
have never had access to this type of game. These games are harmful to developing minds and even
older people with underlying mental diseases. How can we restrict these types of games to help
better our community?
First, let's take a look at our nation's crime statistics to show that because of this violent media we
are worse off. The FBI conducts a study each year that shows how the crime rate around the United
States rises and falls. Since 2014 our country has experienced a rise of 5.3% in violent crime. Rape,
robbery, aggravated assault and murder have all seen a dramatic increase as well. The years before
that, the nation enjoyed a drop in all of these areas. This rise is obviously caused by other problems
as well, but we may be seeing the effects of children that grew up with realistic crime like video
games such as Grand Theft Auto. Grand Theft Auto, is a realistic action adventure game series that
basically allows players to do whatever they please. This includes things like, stealing cars (hence
the name) robbing banks, and even buying a beating up prostitutes. This is obviously highly
inappropriate, and to think that children are playing this game is shameful. Since children often has
difficulties separating fantasy from reality, it is probable that growing up with these types of terrible
influences could be hindering their morals. Another link to the possibility that video games may be
causing this dramatic rise in violent crimes, is the fact that males tend to be the group that commit
the most crime. Males actually make up an overwhelming 81% of violent crime. You can see this
and other information about male crime statistics here, at the university of Minnisotas online libary,

The term "revolutionary" is thrown around a lot with regards to video–game marketing, but what
does "revolutionary" mean in the context of a video game. Dominic Arsenault believes that for a
game to be truly revolutionary in its genre, it must strive to achieve greater things than its
predecessors or evolve the genre itself. (Arsenault, D. (2009) "Video Game Genre, Evolution, and

However simply listing Nier: Automata as an action role–playing game is an inaccurate portrayal of
a game that is truly multi–genre. Nier: Automata achieves being a multi–genre title through its use
of swapping game styles. If you were to use game spots genre path system Nier: Automata would be

Video Games Enhance Cognitive Skills
Despite video games being known for promoting anger and becoming addictive, it is shown that in
recent studies some video games enhance cognitive skills. It is seen that action games enhance
cognitive skills and that "brain training" games do very little in improving these skills because of
lack in critical features. In fairly recent studies about neuroplasticity in the brain, Daphne Bavelier
and C. Shawn Green stumbled upon a discovery that certain participants were scoring well above
average scores in a psychological test. They both assumed it was a fault in the programming, but
instead found there was a certain common connection between the participants. The group of high
scoring participants had recently been spending over 10 hours a week playing a video game. This
led to them to question if that regular amounts of playing games improve brain power and cognitive
funtions. Although it is widely believed that action games cause increased levels of aggression and
addiction if played too long, it is now seen that after long durations of playing action games it
increased your cognitive skills. One of the cognitive skills that was improved was information–
processing speed. Playing games such as Grand Theft Auto and Burnout, which involve quick
streams of events, for extended durations of time lead to improved information–processing speed. In
games such as these the player has to think quick on their feet and decide fast. Whether it is

Chassiakos and colleagues (2016) discusses the costs and benefits of digital and social media use in
children and adolescents. There are various ways digital and social media may impact the child's
development. The authors explain that digital media may improve cognitive and social development
for young children depending on the amount of exposure, type of digital content, and active parental
guidance. Additionally, the authors explain how digital media advocates social engagement and
community that helps teenager's development and self–esteem. However, the authors provide plenty
of evidence that the use of digital and social media may be linked to the risk of obesity, cognitive
development, safety, mental health, behavioral risks, and sleep deprivation. For instance,

Positive And Negative Effects Of Playing Video Games
What are the effects of playing video games?
Have you ever thought about playing video games, but your parents don't like you playing them?
Well not all video games are violent, crime ridden, based off of you killing things. Parents also think
that your not socializing with anyone while playing video games.Well There are quite a few games
out there that are based off of gamers socializing with other gamers through the game, there are also
plenty of games that are based off of strategy, reaction times, and there are some that are proven to
help the player become smarter and slow down old age.
Are video games bad for you? People say yes because they promote violence, and can kill brain
cells. Not all video games promote violence but it also depends on the players view of the game, and
them knowing what's real and what's not, and some have been proven to kill brain cells, like some
first person shooter games, but not all them. This graph represents how violent games effects the
cingulate cortex of the brain, the blue shows the decrease in brain cells, and the red shows the
increase in brain cells. People who think that video gamers are not social because they are sitting by
themselves, well the people who think that are not wrong, but they are also not right. Games have
the multiplayer option, which allows you to play video games with other people, and they can also
communicate with them through the game. As stated by http://www.bbc.co.uk/guides/zcs76fr

The Effects Of Video Games On Our Children
Video games have been accused of contributing too many acts of violence or aggression for
decades. What the media misses is that video games have many benefits we haven't found in any
other media. Society should stop being afraid of video games and instead start looking forward to
how we can best use them to benefit ourselves and our children. Anyone who doesn't understand
why needs only take a quick look at our society. Per a survey, "90% of children in the United States
play video games and 70% of heads of households play video games, too. That leads to the average
age of video gamers to be 33 years old" (Bavelier 21). Society is changing and non–gamers are
being left behind. Playing video games have good effects on our brains such as improvement in
basic visual processes, improvements in attention and vigilance, improvements in executive
functioning, improvements in job–related skills, and improves thinking process. Firstly, playing
video games improves our basic visual processes. In brief, it improves visual contrast sensitivity and
provides successful treatment of amblyopia. For instance, "Fifty hours of action video game play
(spread over ten to twelve weeks) improved visual contrast sensitivity (the ability to distinguish
subtle differences in shades of gray) compared to controls" (Burnsed 23). Furthermore, Amblyopia
(also called "lazy eye") is a disorder arising from early childhood in which one eye becomes
essentially non–functional. As an illustration, Bavelier

Character Analysis: A Raid
Destiny features a rich, cinematic story, centered on your quest to discover and explore the remains
of humanity's Golden Age. As a Guardian, you must venture beyond our walls, into a wild and

started playing this game I asked myself "What kind of game is this?". I mean it is not easy to find
out so we will find out together. So this my question, what kind of game is Destiny? Before I started
this research I knew nothing about this topic. The reason I wanted to learn is because to find a topic

A Raid is a cooperative multiplayer activity in which a relatively large group of players tackle
extremely challenging enemies together, and the raid is on a weekly lockout, which means you can
only get loot from each boss once per week, per character. In Destiny, a raid group is a fireteam of
six players. The raid is an FPS kind of gamemode. Which means it is just like Strike. The final game
mode you will find is the "Crubicle". Enter the Crucible to hone your competitive skills against
other Guardians in arenas that span the solar system. Victory will earn you rewards and reputation.
The Crubicle is the hardest game modes in the game. The main reason is because they do not have
even matches there might be some level 11s and also some level 40s on the same match. Crucible is
an FPS, and an MMO gamemode. So the question was "what kind of game is destiny". I believe the
question has gotten answered very thoroughly, maybe a bit too thoroughly. So here is my overall
analysis, Destiny is overall an FPS game. But do not be fooled it is any fps game you have ever

Violent Video Games Benefits
In 2013, President Obama requested congress to allocate ten million dollars for the research of the
effects violent video games pose towards adolescents. Although many studies exist on the impact of
video games, few have focused on the benefits. News stations are so quick to spread information on
the negative effects that no one has taken into consideration that video games might have positive
effects. I believe that taking a balanced perspective is essential to discovering the truth, especially
with video games. While true that little research has been devoted to the benefits of video games, it

This is especially true with shooter video games, such as Halo 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV. A 2012
study took naive gamers that rarely or never played shooter games, and randomly assigned them to
play either a shooter game or another type of video game. The gamers playing shooter games
showed faster and more accurate attention allocation, high spatial resolution in visual processing,
and enhanced mental rotation abilities. A meta–analysis concluded that these spatial skills
improvements are comparable to formal (high–school and university–level) courses designed to
improve these same skills. This same meta–analysis found that these spatial skills trained can be
trained by video games in a relatively short amount of time and last for an extended period of time.
Of course, these skills transfer to other spatial tasks outside of game. Preliminary research has also
shown that these cognitive advantages manifest in neural processing and efficiency. An fMRI study
found that the areas that control attention allocation were less active during a challenging pattern–
finding puzzle in gamers than in non–gamers, leading the researchers to believe that shooter game
players are more efficient in attention allocation and more effective at filtering out unneeded
information. Cognitive neuroscientists have begun to send requests to video game companies asking
to develope games designed to test hypotheses and the specific mechanisms that provide different
cognitive benefits. In addition to spatial skills, some scholars believe that videogames are important
in developing problem–solving skills. This growth is shown between all genres. The game puzzles

Racial Bias from the Console

A10694259 Introduction
Researchers regularly research the media's influence on race perception, but rarely examine one
specific form: video games. Unlike formats such as television and newspapers, video games provide
an interactive platform for users to live in an alternative world and perform acts considered socially
wrong in real societies (Burgess et al). This form of virtual simulation can reinforce how one
perceives stereotypes at higher rates. Not only do the majority of these games feature white
protagonists, but also task them to defeat ethnically–ambiguous enemies. Currently, the most
popular genre is shooter games set in the Middle East, where the ... Show more content on

Racial bias may also influence who we choose to bond with. Another study suggest we show
empathy bias to in–group members when viewing clips of people being poked with a big needle,
indicated through activation of the anterior cingulate cortex (Xu et al).
Previous studies examining the relationship between video games and race perception mainly
measured racial bias through Implicit Association Tests (Bosman). Not only can these tests be
subjective, but participants may fix their answers in attempts to deny their identity as racist. For my
research, I aim to link neuronal activity of implicit racism into manifested behavior. I hypothesize
that playing video games with negative racial stereotypes will produce stronger implicit thoughts
and explicit behavior of racism than other media formats.
Method
Participants for this study will be recruited from college students looking for extra credit. We will
specifically request for participants with minimal to no video game experience for a more accurate
reading on the effects of video games on race perception. The subjects will be informed that the
experiment will research attention and memory. For this study, we will focus on racial bias against
Middle Easterns, a group often linked to terrorism due to recent military activities. Using fMRI, the
first task will measure initial activation of the amygdala (fear) and anterior cingulate cortex
(empathy). All

Shogun Total War was a cut above the rest for its time where players chose one of the main feudal
Japanese factions and vied for a unified ancient Japan. There was a strategic phase where players
ruled their lands and a battle mode where players controlled their units like chess pieces from a 'god

How does E–sport influence the world? E–sport is the product of the development of electron
because people can appreciate the high technology from watching an E–sport game. A country's
electron influences its technology development, and it can finally affect the economy of a country
when E–sport matches become a business. Therefore, the E–sport was created to show the country's
level of development. Certainly, it came true now because E–sport becomes a kind of sport and
every country holds matches to compete with each other. Another factor that determines the
formation of E–sport is the entertainment need of people. There has been lots of people who

Exploring The Potential For Addiction
On–line gaming has grown a great deal in the last decade, connecting players in countries around
the world. World of Warcraft is perhaps the best–known massively multiplayer online roleplaying
game (MMORPG). These games are incredibly immersive and generally have no real ending, with
players able to continue the game indefinitely via expansions and new content being added. A pilot
study by Hussain and Griffiths (2009) set out to explore the potential for addiction to an MMORPG,
within its psychological and psychosocial effects on players. Generally, studies of MMORPGs have
not had a specific focus on addiction or the psychology of on–line gaming (as cited in Hussain &
Griffiths, 2009).
At the time of their study, it was estimated that there were five million online gamers worldwide (as
cited in Hussain & Griffiths, 2009). According to the statistical analysis site Statista, as of 2013
approximately 144.9 million people worldwide are active daily players of online games, an increase
of almost 3000 percent. Hussain and Griffiths note that playing an MMORPG can become an escape
from a player's real life, and a substitute for the social interactions involved in reality. Therefore, the
importance of studying MMORPG's potential for addiction, and research regarding possible
pathology, is even more relevant.
Hussain and Griffiths explored two hypotheses: (1) assess the impact of online gaming on the lives
of gamers, the independent variable being online gaming, the dependent,

It has become fan favorites all over the world. It will literally take you out your seat in fear. Can you
guess which one it is? It is indeed the genre of horror. Horror has been around for ages in
entertainment and when it hit the games back in the late 1980s' it wasn't as popular as it is now. The
game that started it all was Resident Evil 1 for PlayStation 1. As a kid, most remember playing this

also added the factor of a third person shooter, surviving in a whole lot of different scenarios, having

Exploring Different Types of Video Games Essay
Video games in today's society have become very popular. Every new game that comes out to be
played and conquered by the average gamer has its own category. There are several other types of
genres of games that people play but because of big hit titles and the new popular game systems like
the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, people become more interested in a game that is well known than a
game they have never even heard of before. Every game has its own storyline and own way of how
it unfolds and where the game ends according to game play. Some of the biggest reasons people
sway to certain genres of games is because of the game titles released under them and the demand of
people who want a good game under that category. The top three most ... Show more content on

Unlike action/adventure games, people don't have to run to a particular spot in the game to get that
special item they wanted, instead, they just simply unlock it when he or she has accomplished the
necessary requirements to get the item.
Action/Adventure categories of games are very unique. These types of games generally feature
long–term obstacles that must be overcome using a tool or object that is acquired at the beginning of
the game. These types of games are generally a more item gathering, simple puzzle solving, and
combat game. Games such as Assassins Creed and Ratchet and Clank are perfect examples of this
category of games. Assassins Creed is a bit more puzzle solving and more stealth like than Ratchet
and Clank whereas Ratchet and Clank is more of an action pack filled game with more item
gathering and small obstacles along the way encountering combat in every turn that is made.
Another famous action/adventure game would be Super Mario. The perfect storyline of saving a
princess and while looking for her one would encounter different but strong enemies in each level
he or she would go in; along the way he or she would also benefit from picking up certain items and
having to complete certain obstacles to obtain that item that does later on become very handy when
used it at the right time. Role–playing games play similar to action/adventure games but has a much
more difficult way of how the game is completed.
RPG's or role–playing games

Undertale Essay

  • 1. Undertale Essay Game Analysis: Undertale (2015) In Undertale the combat system is very unique in comparison to other games by being a mix of a Shoot 'em up game and a turn based RPG. Once a player enters combat through a random encounter in the overworld they are greeted with a screen showing the enemies sprite and at the bottom of the screen 4 different options for them to pick; fight, act, item and mercy. Once it is the enemy's turn to attack the player A box will appear with a player controlled heart symbol in the centre, then different things will appear in the box that the player must avoid or they will take damage. If the player chooses the "fight" command they will be shown a bar at the bottom of the screen with a bar moving across the screen. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The game has a simple pixel art style which works quite well as it is meant to resemble a game that would be for the NES or SNES. The characters in battle are always in black and white with a simple black background which as a design choice works quite well as it doesn't distract the player from dodging the enemies attacks and makes sure there's no way they can mistake any background element for an attack they must dodge. The enemy designs in the game are very unique and interesting, often representing some kind of character trope, for example there is an enemy in the game named "Aaron" that is a horse with a mermaid's tail that is obsessed with his muscles. When Aaron attacks the player, the player must move out of the way from 2 arms on the side of the box that come up from the bottom. Every monster in the game has specialised attacks like this, for example there is an enemy that has an obsession with cleaning and his attack is water droplets flowing out from the middle of the screen that the player has to avoid. This is a good design decision as it adds depth and intrigue to the characters in an extremely simple way which will make the player interested to see what other attacks the monsters ... The Benefits Of Video Games On Children Video game and the benefit it has on children Since the turn of the Millennium, Video game began to solidify itself as a leading source of entertainment and as a result it also became widely criticized and many parents began to restricted children from having any access to video games. Parents shouldn't restrict Children's access to Video games since those who have played video games has been shown to many positive impacts on their lives. Studies have shown that children who play video games have a better mental capability than Children who don't play video games. Plus, different genres of video games are shown to have different effects on children such as improvements in spatial skills and some can even reduce obesity. Video games have also been shown to improve a children's education such as having higher test scores and improvement in vocabulary. Any effects video game causes can be reversed if needed yet any skills that a child gain would be beneficial in the digital age they are growing up in. Even as more and more kids are playing more video games there are always going to be those few kids who don't play video games, mainly because parents will either listen or read critics about video games, such as brain damage or eyesight damage, and will refuse to allow their children to play them. But studies are showing that when compared to children who don't play video games children who do play video games are shown to have a better mental capability. Research such as the ... • 3. Aspects of a Good Game Games have been enjoyed for generations, whether they are board games, computer games or console games. However, to succeed in making a good game, it must be enjoyable and must include many different aspects. Through researching, several of the most common and important aspects that a game should have to include to be a 'good game' have been found. The most regularly mentioned aspects of what makes a 'good game' are: Challenge/Reward Freedom Experience Place/Feel Story Challenge/Reward Challenge should be implemented in every game to make it more exciting and engage the player more. They should not be impossible although should be difficult enough to make the player think and construct a strategy or method to surpass them. Challenge should often come with a reward for completing them so that the player will feel more motivated to complete them. Rather than just points, money etc. as rewards; rewards such as new abilities, a new part of the map to explore, a new item or even a new task can be given. These rewards are motivating and also help to keep the player enjoying the game through side quests/challenges, instead of just playing the game to win. Freedom Freedom includes the range of different choices and paths that can be made to complete an objective. For example, going through the front door can attract a lot of attention while the side door will not. You can choose whether you want a huge gunfight between you and the enemy or rather take a stealthy approach. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Video Games Do More Than Entertain Moises Flores English 1A Professor Daniel Rice September 14, 2016 Video Games do more than entertain "Fully 72% of all teens play video games on a computer, game console or portable device like a cellphone, and 81% of teens have or have access to a game console." (Lenhart 1) When most people read this, they might assume it is a bad statistic and something that needs to be lowered, however it actually has many positive attributes that usually go unreported. The positive effects of video games outweigh the negatives in the bigger picture. Video games help to develop the social skills that people think teens lose nowadays. Teenagers who do play video games do better in school than those who do not. They are the most beneficial form of entertainment there is. Not all digital media should be seen as a group of items that go hand in hand. Digital media consists of useful tools that can be, with proper facilitation, used to young society's advantage. Every form of entertainment provides us with something, whether it be just a time killer or a couple of laughs, video games however, provide us with the potential to experience more than just sitting and watching something. Video games can be the most beneficial form of entertainment there is. When compared to something like watching a TV show, completing a video games takes up less time as well as provides more mental stimulation. • 5. Persuasive Essay On Sports Imagine a world without competition. Imagine a world where every student that couldn't solve a simple math equation was accepted into an Ivy League school such as Harvard, or Yale. That wouldn't be very safe now, would it? The student that we were counting on to create the "next best" medical technology had no idea what they were doing because the only reason they got into the school was that the dean "didn't want to hurt anybody's feelings." Although this is a far stretch, this is the reality people like Satasky in "Children Need to Play, Not Compete" wish could come true in today's children's sports. Playing sports for 15 years of my life and competing competitively for 11 of them have done nothing but good for me. Obviously, there have been hardships such trying my best to juggle sports and my many other obligations without letting any of them fall beneath the other, but I did it, and I owe it all to the many years of playing. Although children's sports are becoming increasingly competitive, their parents are playing a major role in the risk of injury and other mental hardships, such as their child being discouraged if they don't make the cut. However, the values the children learn by playing competitively such as perseverance and the opportunities that they bring upon themselves through hard work outweigh the disadvantages. With playing a competitive sport at a young age comes great responsibility not only on the child but the parent's end as well. The underline problem ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Causes And Effects Of Video Games There are many causes and effects on what makes one video game more popular than others. Some video games become popular for no reason; they become public sensations just because people like them. However, most popular video games have key features that make them appealing to the public. One of the most important reasons a video game becomes popular is story. A great game has an in depth storyline that keeps players on edge and wanting for more. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is one of the best examples of a great storyline. The fifth installment in a long series of games since the 1990s, this game has one of the most intricate storylines available to a player. This game has over 1000 different quests, 15 different joinable factions, and lore that goes beyond the game itself. Most quests also feature unique characters with voice acting which makes the game feel more lifelike. The player always has something to do within the realm of Skyrim. Battlefield 1 is another game with a great storyline. Battlefield 1 is a first person shooter that is set in World War 1. The story, instead of following a single storyline, goes through several shorter stories. Each small story allows you to play through the eyes of a different character who is based on actual events. Most people only think of the German front, but this game allows the player to experience what World War 1 was like in the Middle East and Italy. The game also allows you to play as a character other than just a white male. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

From aggression and violence to the connection to mood disorders, video games tend to get a bad reputation. However, there are studies that have been done about the possible positive effects of games as well. There are definitely fewer positive studies than negative, but they are out there for those who search them out. The study that was used by Kendall Ashley in her article "How Videogames Can Help with Depression and Anxiety", was not one of those studies. News Article Purpose and Study Fit (250) The news article by Kendall Ashley, "How Videogames Can Help with Depression and Anxiety", claimed exactly as its title suggests. The article went into how different types of games, such as MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role playing games), puzzle games, and games based on depression supposedly assisted with anxiety and depression. I went into reading this article favorably, as someone who both enjoys video games and as someone who is diagnosed with anxiety. However, after comparing what the study said with what the article presented it as, I found myself disappointed. Ashley either did not understand what the study said or just named dropped the study to make her article seem more valid. Online Gaming Security and Fraud Throughout the evolution of gaming, there has been a movement of large communities to online gaming. With that high amount of traffic, these online games have become prime targets for crime to emerge from. Due to the online nature and virtual elements of this kind of community, the most common type of crime committed was theft, followed closely by fraud (Chen 2005). With the increase in online communities from online gaming, businesses have started advertising both to these markets and through them. This has opened up not only the online communities to the threat of fraud, but also those businesses and their competitors. This paper will focus primarily on the Massive Multiplayer Online Role–Playing Game (MMORPG) community, and the ways that fraud is committed in that type of gaming. 2.1 Fraud in MMORPGs Fraud has been influencing MMORPGs and online gaming for years. The world of online has moved from being a software license industry to an uplink time payment model due to illegal sharing and software copying (Chen 2005). With the move to subscription based gameplay, in game items now have a monetary value due to the growth of economies that trade the virtual game money or items for real world currency (Chen 2005). • 11. The Pros And Cons Of Video Games Many people stand behind the fact that video games do help people and kids in the development of their brain, while other people do not. The argument based around the idea that video games help the development of people or not has been going on for a long time. Different stories come up on how people are getting seriously harmed while playing video games, but there are other stories coming up about the positives about playing video games. One side believes that playing video games hinders the development of a child's brain. Also, they believe the more violent video games we see on the markets today cause children to be violent and lash out on family. On the other side of the argument though, scientists go deep in to their research on how video games help the development of the human brain and the positive effects it can have for people long–term. Also, on the same side of the argument video games can be used for educational purposes. This argument has valid points on both sides, while they have good reasoning behind them. In the opposition's point of view, games often lead to poor health for the person playing the game. This comes from the fact that most games involve sitting in front of the TV ("Eight Ways Video Games Are Bad For Your Health," par. 1). Most of the games out on the market today are plain and simple. The user grabs a controller and sits in front of the TV and begins to play the game. This is all true but, there are games that require physical motion like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

That's 99 percent of boys and 94 percent of girls, with little difference in the percentages among various racial and ethnic groups and incomes." The 7 percent who do not play video games have access to a gaming console either through friends or family. So is this making children more violent? Is there a difference in kids who are exposed to different game styles? A lot of parents believe that if they let their son play Call of Duty at a young age, he will grow up to be a terrorist. Video games are not that large of an influence on a child's mind, no matter how much they play. They can, however push them in that direction in life. If a child's surrounds himself with dark music, gory video games, and inappropriate TV shows and movies it will begin to affect his attitude and how he handles situations. He will resort the kinds of violence that he used to. The kinds he see's in the shows he watches and the games he plays. Forbes.com says that as of 2014, 49.9 percent of video games being played are of the action and shooter genre. The things kids are putting in their minds are affecting how they go about life. • 14. The Effects Of Playing Games On The Classroom Essay When I was a teenager, I loved playing games and it was the common interest I shared with my friends. Yet our interest and enjoyment in gameplay did not always give us pleasant experiences. Playing games were considered to be waste of times and looked down upon by parents, school teachers, or even other students. When the events of game related social problems occurred, we had to overcome severe criticisms from the others. For example, in my middle school, one teacher criticized students for playing games and blamed them for dropping the average score of the class when my class ranked last in final exam. Some of the students questioned the logics for his regular derogation for the game. Rather than educative response or constructive conversation, they were confronted with the call to the teacher's office and punishment of an apology letter after school. I was one of the students who had to write ten pages of apology letter. While I had played video games, they mainly consisted of Nintendo games which are generally much more docile than games than what most guys played, which consisted of first person shooter games such as Halo and Call of Duty. This lead to awkward moments when trying to have conversations with other guys, especially when I was going into high school. One hot summer afternoon, one that exemplified the extremes that Kansan weather can produce, exemplified just how bad these conversations could get. Band camp had started up and we were learning the basics of marching and practicing the music for our show for that year. • 16. Task Switching Behavior Video games have become one of the most popular forms of entertainment. Video games require players to manipulate images on a screen. In general, those that play video games experience improvements in hand–eye coordination. This is logical, considering the quick movements one must use to complete a video game. Video games also require the player to perform mental processes similar to those the player would perform in the real world. With this in mind, it is possible that certain video games can improve mental processes that are exercised within the virtual world. Studies have investigated if and how driving, action, and puzzle video games improve visual skills and risk perception, dual–task and task–switching skills, and broader executive ... Furthermore, the gamers outperformed nongamers on the task switching therefore. Interesting enough, there was no significant difference in single–task performance between the two groups. While these findings seem promising, there is no way to say that the differences in dual–task and task–switching performances were caused by video game play. Therefore, the investigators decided to perform another experiment. The purpose of the experiment was to see if action video games are responsible for the difference in performance on these tests. The researchers picked two video games for the experiment: Medal of Honor and Tetris. Medal of Honor is an action video game and Tetris is a puzzle game. It was hypothesized that playing Medal of Honor would create improvements in the dual–task and task–switching tests while Tetris would not create an improvement. In the between subjects experiment, 32 college students were randomly separated into three groups, 10 in the Medal of Honors group, 10 in the Tetris group, and 12 in the control group, whom were not exposed to any video games. The experiment consisted of a pretest, conditioning trials, and a posttest. During the pretest, all three groups were took the dual–task and the task–switching tests. After the tests, the two experimental groups practiced their respective video games in 15 one–hour sessions over four weeks. The control group did not practice either video game. • 17. Violent Video Games Cause Violent Crime The most frequently asked question in recent years is, do violent video games lead to violent crime? Most people would think that the answer is a simple yes or no answer, but it's not. This type of correlation is not all black and white; there is a lot of misconception and misunderstanding about it. In this paper, I will be discussing the history of violent video games. I will include scientific studies done on violent video games. I will include various crime cases involving video games. I will discuss the effects of violent video games. Lastly, I will give possible solutions to prevent violent crime from happening. There is a lot of history when it comes to video games and violent video games, but the earliest violent video games have been around since the 1970s. In 1976, Death Race was the first video game criticized for its violence. The goal of this game was to run over human– like creatures known as gremlins that made an unrealistic human screaming sound when struck. Since the 1970s, everything has gone downhill. In the 1980s, beloved games we know today like Pac–Man and Super Mario Bros faced criticism for their cartoon violence. This is because of Pac– Man killing the ghosts and Mario attacking various enemies to achieve his goal to get to the next level. One of the first graphic violent video games is Mortal Kombat; this game is a one–on–one fighting game where realistic human characters usually fight to the death. • 18. Pros And Cons Of Violent Video Games Violent Video Games Need More Restriction There is no doubt that violent media, in any form is more accessible today than it ever has been in the past. Why is nothing being done to make sure these things don't fall into the hands of the wrong people, mainly children. Anyone who has played competitive online first person shooters has come across the 10 or 11 year old little kid, that should have never had access to this type of game. These games are harmful to developing minds and even older people with underlying mental diseases. How can we restrict these types of games to help better our community? First, let's take a look at our nation's crime statistics to show that because of this violent media we are worse off. The FBI conducts a study each year that shows how the crime rate around the United States rises and falls. Since 2014 our country has experienced a rise of 5.3% in violent crime. Rape, robbery, aggravated assault and murder have all seen a dramatic increase as well. The years before that, the nation enjoyed a drop in all of these areas. This rise is obviously caused by other problems as well, but we may be seeing the effects of children that grew up with realistic crime like video games such as Grand Theft Auto. Grand Theft Auto, is a realistic action adventure game series that basically allows players to do whatever they please. This includes things like, stealing cars (hence the name) robbing banks, and even buying a beating up prostitutes. This is obviously highly inappropriate, and to think that children are playing this game is shameful. Since children often has difficulties separating fantasy from reality, it is probable that growing up with these types of terrible influences could be hindering their morals. Another link to the possibility that video games may be causing this dramatic rise in violent crimes, is the fact that males tend to be the group that commit the most crime. Males actually make up an overwhelming 81% of violent crime. You can see this and other information about male crime statistics here, at the university of Minnisotas online libary, http://open.lib.umn.edu/socialproblems/chapter/8–3–who–commits–crime/. The term "revolutionary" is thrown around a lot with regards to video–game marketing, but what does "revolutionary" mean in the context of a video game. It is seen that action games enhance cognitive skills and that "brain training" games do very little in improving these skills because of lack in critical features. In fairly recent studies about neuroplasticity in the brain, Daphne Bavelier and C. Shawn Green stumbled upon a discovery that certain participants were scoring well above average scores in a psychological test. They both assumed it was a fault in the programming, but instead found there was a certain common connection between the participants. The group of high scoring participants had recently been spending over 10 hours a week playing a video game. This led to them to question if that regular amounts of playing games improve brain power and cognitive funtions. Although it is widely believed that action games cause increased levels of aggression and addiction if played too long, it is now seen that after long durations of playing action games it increased your cognitive skills. One of the cognitive skills that was improved was information– processing speed. Playing games such as Grand Theft Auto and Burnout, which involve quick streams of events, for extended durations of time lead to improved information–processing speed. There are various ways digital and social media may impact the child's development. The authors explain that digital media may improve cognitive and social development for young children depending on the amount of exposure, type of digital content, and active parental guidance. Additionally, the authors explain how digital media advocates social engagement and community that helps teenager's development and self–esteem. Are video games bad for you? People say yes because they promote violence, and can kill brain cells. Not all video games promote violence but it also depends on the players view of the game, and them knowing what's real and what's not, and some have been proven to kill brain cells, like some first person shooter games, but not all them. What the media misses is that video games have many benefits we haven't found in any other media. Society should stop being afraid of video games and instead start looking forward to how we can best use them to benefit ourselves and our children. Anyone who doesn't understand why needs only take a quick look at our society. Per a survey, "90% of children in the United States play video games and 70% of heads of households play video games, too. That leads to the average age of video gamers to be 33 years old" (Bavelier 21). Society is changing and non–gamers are being left behind. Playing video games have good effects on our brains such as improvement in basic visual processes, improvements in attention and vigilance, improvements in executive functioning, improvements in job–related skills, and improves thinking process. Firstly, playing video games improves our basic visual processes. In brief, it improves visual contrast sensitivity and provides successful treatment of amblyopia. For instance, "Fifty hours of action video game play (spread over ten to twelve weeks) improved visual contrast sensitivity (the ability to distinguish subtle differences in shades of gray) compared to controls" (Burnsed 23). This is especially true with shooter video games, such as Halo 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV. A 2012 study took naive gamers that rarely or never played shooter games, and randomly assigned them to play either a shooter game or another type of video game. The gamers playing shooter games showed faster and more accurate attention allocation, high spatial resolution in visual processing, and enhanced mental rotation abilities. A meta–analysis concluded that these spatial skills improvements are comparable to formal (high–school and university–level) courses designed to improve these same skills. This same meta–analysis found that these spatial skills trained can be trained by video games in a relatively short amount of time and last for an extended period of time. Of course, these skills transfer to other spatial tasks outside of game. Preliminary research has also shown that these cognitive advantages manifest in neural processing and efficiency. An fMRI study found that the areas that control attention allocation were less active during a challenging pattern– finding puzzle in gamers than in non–gamers, leading the researchers to believe that shooter game players are more efficient in attention allocation and more effective at filtering out unneeded information. Cognitive neuroscientists have begun to send requests to video game companies asking to develope games designed to test hypotheses and the specific mechanisms that provide different cognitive benefits. In addition to spatial skills, some scholars believe that videogames are important in developing problem–solving skills. This growth is shown between all genres. Not only can these tests be subjective, but participants may fix their answers in attempts to deny their identity as racist. A pilot study by Hussain and Griffiths (2009) set out to explore the potential for addiction to an MMORPG, within its psychological and psychosocial effects on players.
