There are three types of UV radiation: 1. UVA penetrates deeply and causes aging and skin cancer. 2. UVB causes burning and sunburn, aging, and skin cancer. It is strongest from 11am-4pm. 3. UVC is the strongest but is blocked by the atmosphere. Vehicle windshields block 99% of UVB and 80% of UVA, while side windows block 97% of UVB and 35% of UVA. Applying window tinting films can block over 99% of both UVA and UVB as well as reduce infrared heat radiation entering the vehicle between 35-66%.

There are three types of UV Radiation
1. UVA - Is responsible for Aging. UVA radiation penetrates deep into the skin
and is responsible for premature aging of the skin and skin cancer.
2. UVB - Is responsible for Burning.
UVB radiation is stronger than UVA radiation. It mainly affects the outer
layers of the skin, causing sunburns, premature aging of the skin, and skin
cancer. These rays are strongest during the summer months – especially
between 11 am and 4 pm.
3. UVC - UVC radiation is the strongest, most dangerous form of UV light.
However, they are stopped by the earth’s atmosphere and do not reach
earth’s surface.

3. A 69-year-old man presented with a 25-year history of gradual, asymptomatic thickening and wrinkling of
the skin on the left side of his face. The patient reported that he had driven a delivery truck for 28 years.
Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays transmit through window glass, penetrating the epidermis and upper layers of
dermis. Chronic UVA exposure can result in thickening of the epidermis and stratum corneum, as well as
destruction of elastic fibres. This photo aging effect of UVA is contrasted with photo carcinogenesis.
Although exposure to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays is linked to a higher rate of photo carcinogenesis, UVA has also
been shown to induce substantial DNA mutations and direct toxicity, leading to the formation of skin
cancer.

5. Windscreens:
Windscreens on vehicles do block out UV Rays, the reason being
that these are mostly laminated. The plastic layer in between with
its UV inhibitors can help block up to 99% of UVB and around 80%
UVA.
Side windows and rear window:
These are Tempered glass mainly for strength so it breaks into tiny
little pieces rather than shards, which is safer. So the UV block out
isn’t as strong as a windscreen although it still cuts out most of the
UVB (up to 97%) its the UVA that gets through, only blocking out
around 35% of UVA, this also depends on the vehicle but the
majority of vehicles have similar readings. Privacy glass which is
fitted on the rear of some vehicles has about the same reading.

6. Infrared Radiation(IR):
Infrared radiation is basically exposure to heat, so when you get in your vehicle
its hot and the steering wheel burns as you touch it, this is caused by IR. Now
imagine driving and you can feel your skin getting hot through the glass this is
also IR. There is limited information on the effects to humans but aging is one
cause that they are researching. Glass on it’s own doesn’t stop IR with 83% of
solar energy (heat) passing through normal tempered glass and 61% through
Privacy glass. The laminated front screen doesn’t fair any better coming in
around 74%. So this explains why the interior of the vehicle is always hot when
exposed to the sun, dashboards, steering wheels, door trims, parcel shelves,
seats and anything left in the vehicle. Exposure to this heat along with UV
Radiation can damage not only you but your vehicle as well.

7. How to prevent UVR and IR:
One of the best ways to protect yourself and your occupants in your
