Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that is associated with memory deficits and cognitive decline. It destroys neurons and their connections in the brain, especially in areas related to memory, language, and reasoning. This affects the brain in several ways: amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles build up, inflammation occurs, and the brain shrinks due to loss of neurons. Currently, there is no cure for Alzheimer's disease, but treatments can help symptoms during the mild to moderate stages by preventing the breakdown of acetylcholine or reducing amyloid plaques.
