This presentation may help understand at least a few difference between popular and parallel cinema. The presentation uses a song from Marathi film 'Sairat' and Hindi remake 'Dhadak'. The song is 'Zingat' - which has almost similar lyrics and picturasation in both the films. The presentation ends with an analysis of both the songs by Lallantop. The reviewer explains the difference between the picturisation of both the songs which makes our point clear.

Understanding Cinema: Sairat and Dhadak
1. How to differentiate an ‘Art’
film from that of ‘Popular’?
Understanding
Parallel Cinema
2. The Test of Popularity
• If a film earns lots of money, it is popular and not an
art film.
• This is laymen’s way of judging films based on its box-
office collection.
• Box office collection does not make a film classic or a
parallel cinema.
• Very popular films may also have artistic value or a
film with artistic value can be popular.
3. What makes the difference?
• The ‘Art’ films does not beautify ‘setting’, ‘costume’, ‘spectacle’,
‘dance’ and ‘diction’ (language).
• The art films keeps it as ‘real’ as possible.
• The popular or films having mass appeal ‘beautifies’ to such an extent
that everything becomes ‘artificial’.
• The characters are unbelievable. The action is hyper rather than real.
• The dialogues are unreal and far away from real communication of
the people.
• Let us see this example.
4. ‘Dhadak’ is Hindi remake of Marathi
‘Sairat’.
Let us watch picturization of ‘Zingat’
song in both the films.
