The Job of a Film Director The film director has an elaborate job, classed as an art in its own
sense. Its meticulous details and multi million dollar bills at the end make a director's job truly an
art. How they can take the imagination and lay it on a roll of film is an array of elaborate casting,
screening etc. and requires a special skill. The general meaning of the word director is:

Unsure of trust or higher power, Billy is forced to a state of neglect, beautifully represented with
Loach's brutal simplicity and bland surroundings.
Billy then goes out to his paper round we see that his bike has been taken by Jud. We have
enough information to know that Jud is a bully and that he cares not for any brotherly bond that
they might have. This is further used by Loach to show hate and despair. So Billy now has to run
to the shop. This is a good chance for the director to show the viewer the environment that Billy
lives in; this scene really gives 'a sense of place'. The director has established to the viewer the
importance of the location. We can see now that Simplicity is now used now in every aspect of
the filming, even cinematography. All scenes are broad and general, no closing up to anything,
maybe portraying the views of Billy. I believe there is no studio work or specially constructed sets
because it contributes to the film. It gives it an air of atmosphere, realism but most importantly

One of the genre conventions is iconography, which 'derives from art history, where it only
referred to visual signs. The context in which an object or sound is used is crucial in defining its

The introduction of sound films in the late 1920's was a divisive issue among those involved and
interested in the emerging motion picture industry. Even though it wasn't the sudden breakthrough it
is often perceived to be, the addition of sound and voice to mainstream cinema revolutionized movie
making and led to conflicting viewpoints as to whether or not this innovation was a positive
progression for film as an art and as an industry.
While the addition of sound to films was generally perceived as an advancement, some critics and
filmmakers believed that it takes away from the artistic essence of the medium. Among these

While Arnheim's views on the future of film and the idea of a complete film can be somewhat
insightful, I disagree with his conclusion that the introduction of sound and color diminishes the
creative quality and originality of movies. He states his belief that eventually film will develop to
the point where we "we have nothing to look forward to" (Arnheim , 184).
In all forms of art there is a natural inclination to explore and experiment within the medium. The
resulting methods and formats can be seen as alternatives and additions to existing ones. I do not
believe that, in terms of technical decisions, there is a superior style of film making that the
industry progresses to on a set path. I agree with Arnheim's statement that "there is no objection to
the complete film as an alternative to the stage" if it exists with the other types of films (Arhheim,
186). In some cases advances in method and technique are used to fix the problems of technological
limitations. In other cases these advances provide alternatives. The introduction of color is
described by the latter. Color was introduced as an alternative to black and white movies but never
completely replaced them and didn't stop the use of black and white as an effective technique in
modern cinema.

Even if one plans on becoming a director and not a screenwriter one needs to know what kind of
scripts to look for. This is very important for a beginning small movie director since the reader will
most likely be writing their own scripts to get some recognition. A script is a document that
outlines every aural, visual, behavioral, and lingual element required to tell a story, according to
the dictionary definition at www.Wikidpedia.org. It is crucial to remember that film is a visual
medium. One doesn't tell the audience the story, one shows them. So what one will be writing is

A major change that has occurred in the development of film is the linearity of narrative. The history
of film spans over one hundred years ago, with classical narrative emerging in Hollywood around the
nineteen thirties. The classical narrative period had a strong emphasis on linearity and coherence,
where characters where goal centred and consistent in personality and action. In the nineteen sixties a
change began to emerge in Hollywood, with Breathless (Jean–Luc Godard, 1960) breaking the

Rather than accepting the outlined narrative, as with classical narrative, the unpredictability and
shifting structure of non–linear narrative forces the viewer to question and evaluate the sequence of
events.
Sudden shifts in scenes or stories keep the viewers concentration. Media, for example news
headlines and YouTube, provide bursts of information in a very short period oftime. When browsing
the internet, the twenty–first century has become accustomed to skimming, and flipping between

When the task of creating a film trailer was first put to us, I had several ideas for the movie's
context. The first was of a movie in the action genre that dealt with revenge, whilst the other two
were in the horror genre. The horror genre appealed to me more, as a low budget film can still have
the desired effect by use of different filming techniques, and I wanted to depend more on a
psychological aspect. My first idea was to do a film about a poltergeist. I had watched several

I purchased the Exorcist DVD, which featured a making of documentary. Here I learned of Friedkin's
strict attention to detail, and also uncovered some of his secrets that made the film so effective. The
film features two main techniques throughout the film that I immediately thought about adding to
my own film, those being the use of lighting and sound. The film moves from very bright light
scenes, such as the films opening in the Middle East, to the darkness of "Georgetown" (the films
setting), or from the clean and well–lit living room of the house, to the black and gloomy mist of the
girl's bedroom. Why?
The sound was used similarly, from eerily quiet to sudden loudness, one scene that uses this is the
sharp cut from the Priest's gentle dream of his mother, to the piercing scream of the little girl. Why
The use of restful music as the main soundtrack in "The Exorcist" added to the "loud and quiet"
technique Friedkin used, to create the sense that everything is calm. I myself began my trailer using
this technique, with some gentle music, so that when things begin to go wrong, the impact is more

Towards the movie's beginning we see Elizabeth being interogated on treason charges. From a God's
Eye view she is seated alone in the middle surrounded by three men moving around her. The shot
mirrors that of the opening burning at the stake. When the camera recedes to her eye level,
occasionally cross shaped windows are visible on the back wall of the castle. This piece illustrates
how she must continually stand alone against those are out to oust her as their rightfull ruler, the
caslte's vast open space also helps to confirm her lack of support amoung the nobles. The windows
portray the on going religious battle.
In Raging Bull Scorsace portrays Jake LaMotta's life as a constant battle. At the turning point with
the montage sequence of flashbacks we see many short clips of his numerous bouts mixed with
colorized home video of his late courtship to early marriage with Vicky. This shows that he has no
distinction between the boxing ring and life in general. The home video having color only means
that this was the point in his life where he was most happiest, and he will always remember it vividly.
In Rocco and His Brothers Visconti conveys Rocco's strength through his self and moral sacrifices.
This is most evident in the scene on the bridge where Rocco denies himself and breaks up with
Nadia by telling her to go back to his brother Simone. It's not that Rocco doesn't love her, it's that his
"moral law"
