The beauty of humans is that in their finite lives they have infinite opportunities to make a difference to people and planet. With this thought in mind , a special calendar to promote SDG 15 – Life on Land has been developed by UN GCNI - CEGET and CLAW

The importance of forests cannot be underestimated. Besides providing habitats
for animals and livelihoods for humans, forests also offer watershed protection,
prevent soil erosion and mitigate climate change. Unfortunately, as the economy
of a nation grows, the forest areas diminish at an increasing pace. Despite our
dependenceonforestsforsheersurvival,wearestillallowingthemtodisappear.
Tocreateawarenessontheneedofforestsforourpresentandfuture survival,as
wellastobringintofocuslesservisitednationalparksofthecountry,theCentreof
Excellence for Governance, Ethics and Transparency at UNGC India and CLaW
(Conservation Lenses and Wildlife) launched an online competition
#HiddenJewels2018. This calendar comprises of the Top 12 winning entries of
thatcompetition.
In September 2015, all 193 Member States of the United Nations adopted a plan
forachievingabetterfutureforall–layingoutapathoverthenext15yearstoend
extreme poverty, fight inequality and injustice, and protect our planet. The new
global goals result from a process that has been more inclusive than ever, with
Governments involving businesses, civil society and citizens from the outset.
Fulfilling these ambitions will take an unprecedented effort by all sectors in
society.
Through this calendar we especially invite diverse group of stakeholders to work
together in the effective fulfilment of The calendar is aSDG Goal 15 – Life on Land.

Satpura National Park is located in
Hoshangabad district of Madhya
Pradesh State in Central India. Bio-

DUDHWA NATIONAL PARK
Dudhwa National Park resides in the
areas of Lakhimpur & Kheri district of
Uttar Pradesh, lying adjacent to the
Indo-Nepal border, bringing together
Kishanpur and Katerniaghat Wildlife
Sanctuaries. The northern boundary
of the park is being constituted by
Mohana and Suheli rivers. It is spread
over an expanse of approximately 811
sq km of marshes, grasslands and
dense forests, is an ideal and
protected home for over 38 species of
mammals, 16 species of reptiles and
numerous species of birds.

MANAS NATIONAL PARK
Manas, at the base of foot hills of the
Bhutan-Himalayas in the state of
Assam, with unique biodiversity and
landscape is one of the first reserves
included in the network of tiger
reserves under the ‘Project Tiger’ in
1973. Passing through the heart of
the park is the Manas River, a major
tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra
river. Endemic wildlife species such
as the Golden Langur, Hispid Hare,
Pygmy Hog and Assam Roofed
Turtle, along with a huge population
of Wild Water Buffaloes, are other
attractions of the park that is rich in
flora and fauna.

KAZIRANGA NATIONAL PARK
The Kaziranga National Park lies at
the edge of Eastern Himalayas, with
the mighty Brahmaputra flowing in
its vicinity. It is spread over the
Golaghat and Nagaon districts of
Assam. The park includes small
water-bodies and is an expanse of
marshland, tall elephant grass and
tropical moist broad-leaf forests. The
Kaziranga National Park is most
famous for the one-horned rhino. It
also has the highest density of tigers.
Different inhabiting and migrating
birds such as Spot billed Pelican,
White bellied Heron, Nordmann's
Greenshank, Lesser White-fronted
Goose are found in this Park. The
Birdlife International has declared it
as an Important Bird Area.

BOR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Bor Wildlife Sanctuary is situated
along the Southern boundary of
Nagpur district and Northern
boundary of Wardha district of
Maharashtra in the foothills of
Satpuda mountain range. The
sanctuary covers an area of 121.1
square kms which also includes the
drainage basin of the Bor Dam and
catchment area of Bor River. Teak,
ain, tendu and bamboo are the main
species of flora whereas Tigers,
panthers, bisons, blue bulls, chitals,
sambars, peacocks, barking deers,
chinkara, monkeys, wild boars, bears
and wild dogs are the important
faunas of the sanctuary.

SUNDARBANS NATIONAL PARK
Sunderban mangroves form part of
the subcontinent's largest mangrove
system with a tiger population in a
distinct ecological setting. 2585 sq.
kms of the Indian Sundarbans
constitutes one of the largest Tiger
Reserve and National Park in India.
The Sunderbans is isolated with no
forest connection to other tiger-
occupied main land. Hence, there is
heavy biotic pressure for forest
resources. The habitat is traversed by
many narrow tidal channels forming
small to large islands. Tigers readily
cross these islands and man-tiger
interactions are common.

PANNA TIGER RESEVE
Panna National Park lies besides the areas
of the Ken River in the central state of India,
Madhya Pradesh at a distance of 57 km
from Khajuraho, a world heritage center.
Ken River flows through this reserve and
creates beautiful waterfalls on its way to
the valley. In 2009, Panna National Park
made international headlines when it lost
every single tiger to poaching, but thanks
to the work of a battery of forest officials,
scientists and NGOs, there is new hope for
the tigers, eight years after their
disappearance from the park. Since a
reintroduction programme was begun,
when individual tigers were brought in
from neighbouring reserves such as Kanha
and Bandhavgarh, Panna's tiger
population has steadily grown. The park
today has as many as 23 adults and 14
cubs, according to the last study
conducted by Wildlife Institute of India. But
just as the tiger returns to Panna, the
reserve itself is up against a brand-new
threat: the ₹18,000 crore Ken-Betwa river-
linking project. If implemented, the
Bundelkhand-based project will submerge
prime forest spread over 4,000 hectares
and destroy 11 lakh trees. The tiger reserve
itself will be bifurcated by the dam, leaving
even less forest space for the beleaguered
tigers.

AMRABAD TIGER RESERVE
Amrabad Tiger Reserve spreads over
2,800 sq.kms in the districts of
Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda in
Telangana, and is the largest tiger
reserve in the country. There are an
estimated 23 Tigers in the reserve.
Trees like Teak, Silver grey wood,
Beach almond, East Indian satinwood,
Indian Olibanum, etc; form a major
composition of the forest. Mammals
like Leopard, Indian Wolf, Wild dog,
Jackal, Striped Hynea, Spotted deer,
Sambar, Barking deer, Chikara,
Chowsingha, Nilgai, Honey badger
etc; make it a researcher's paradise.

BUXA TIGER RESERVE
Buxa Tiger Reserve is located at the
north eastern corner of West Bengal
bordering Bhutan and Assam. It
serves as an international corridor
for the migration of elephants
between India and Bhutan. This
reserve is home to 67 species of
mammals, 36 species of reptiles and
230 species of unidentified avifauna
and encompasses more than eight
types of forests. A number of animals
like Chinese Pangolin. Regal Python
(reticulate) Clouded Leopard are
endemic to the region.

PANNA TIGER RESEVE
Panna National Park and the
surrounding territorial forest area of
North and South Panna forest
division is the only large chunk of
wildlife habitat remaining in North
Madhya Pradesh. The park has
numerous sites of historical
importance with stone paintings and
is composed of deciduous forests.
The ideal home to Indian tigers, it
also boasts of other species like
Indian wolf, four-horned antelope,
sloth bear, pangolin, rusty spotted
cat, leopard, caracal and gharial.

SUNDARBANS NATIONAL PARK
Sunderbans national park is located
at the South Eastern tip of the 24
Paraganas district in the state of West
Bengal. It got its name from one of
the mangrove plants known as
Sundari (Heritiera Minor). The
Sundarbans are a part of the world's
largest delta formed by the rivers
Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna.
Sundarbans is a vast area covering
4262 square kms in India alone, with
a larger portion in Bangladesh.

unique platform to engage companies in responsible business behaviour through the Ten Principles focusing on human rights,
labour standards, the environment andanti-corruption. Global Compact Network India (GCN)
Indiahttp://globalcompact.in/formed in 2000 and registered as non-profit society in November 2003 functions as the Indian
Local Network of the UNGC. By incorporating the Global Compact principles into strategies, policies and procedures, and
establishing a culture of integrity, GCNI encourages companies to uphold their basic responsibilities to people and planet. At
present, the India network ranks among the top 3, out of the 102 local networks in the world.
GCNI established the http://ceget.in/ in 2015, with theCentre of Excellence for Governance, Ethics and Transparency (CEGET)
overall objective of developing a premier knowledge repository that conducts innovative action researchand training, provides
a platform for dialogue and communication and facilitates systematic policy initiatives for strengthening transparency and
ethics in business. The goal of CEGET is to bring in diverse stakeholders on a common platform to deliberate upon challenges,
exchange best practices, and make policy recommendations to promote responsible business standards, across various sectors.
Conservation Lenses and Wildlife (CLaW) http://www.claw.co.in/ is an independent forum of wildlife enthusiasts from all over
the world. The group which started in 2015, boasts of a robust 139263-member base. Amongst various activities that range
from Food Grain Distribution, Medical Camps, Free Medicine Distribution, Guide Training, First Aid Training, Awareness Drives,
and Winter-wear Distribution, CLaW maintains a record of all tiger mortality incidents within the country, in a calendar year. A
detailed comparison of these statistics helps in understanding the pattern of deaths and have a concentrated effort on key
problem areas.
The CLaW campaigns have had several hues. Some were organised and conducted to support and lend a helping hand to the
guardians of the forest and their families; some to raise awareness on conservation or voice opinions and some to enrich the
members. The objective was to involve as many people as possible and develop ownership of the campaigns.
