India wildlife
1. In the wild, amongst the wild, wildest experience of life!
2. WILDLIFE IN INDIA
The diversity of Indian Wildlife is not secondary to its African counterpart, perhaps superior in
many ways. No wonder it is among the 17 mega diverse countries which has about 60-70% of
bio-diversity on the planet. One cannot discount the heterogeneity of habitat. The Western ghats,
and Himalayan regions are the gems of our rich heritage. Some very successful conservation
programmes like, the Project Tiger, Project Elephant, Project Rhino, have ensured not only
survival but we can safely say thriving population of many species in our Eco-system. In more
than 100 national parks, 500 wildlife sanctuaries, India has the largest population of Royal Bengal
Tigers in the wild, which happens to be our umbrella and Super Star species. Not lagging far
behind are Asiatic Lions endemic to India, Asian Elephants, One Horned Rhinos, Snow Leopards,
Himalayan Black Bears, and we are proud to be home to more than 1200 bird species.
Exploring the glorious wilderness of the Indian subcontinent is a lifetime experience, which has in
store, countless exciting possibilities and timeless memories. The extravagant canvas is spread. To
complete a perfect picture, all one needs is a vision that will lead and a mentor that will guide.
3. With an average length of 9-10 ft, Tigers inhabit
the length and breadth of India from the lofty
heights of the Himalayas to the forests of
Southern India. The size varies according to the
type of habitat they live in, Tigers from the
Himalayas being larger in size from the ones
from Central & Southern India.
The Indian Tiger also known as the Royal
Bengal Tiger is bright in color with well
developed stripes and a short luxuriant coat. It
is mainly a solitary animal keeping itself to the
densely forested areas. In India, the remains of
the tigers have been found till the altitude of
10,000 ft which shows its adaptability. It can be
found in the dense evergreen forests, in the
forests on the foothill of the Himalayas, in the
forests of central India and in the Sunderbans
where it leads a sort of amphibious life.
THE INDIAN TIGER
4. The big old elephant never fails to evoke gasps
when seen in actuality. India is one of the
biggest habitats in the world for elephants. In
fact, on the odd day, you may even spot some
sauntering on the roads, although India’s
national parks is where their habitat is.
One of the grandest animals of the jungle, the
Indian Elephant is to a large extent different
from its African counterpart. Smaller in size, the
Indian elephant can be recognized by their long
trunks and less defined ears.
In India, the elephants are found in the lower
ranges of the Himalayas, in the Western Ghats
right on till the forest of Kerala, Tamil Nadu,
Karnataka, Orissa, West Bengal, Assam.
THE INDIAN ELEPHANT
5. Indian Lion on first sight looks slightly smaller
then its African cousin due to absence of mane.
But it makes up on this with a tuft of hair on its
elbows, at the end of its tail and on its belly. The
average length of Asiatic Lion is around 9 ft.
Lions were quite common at one time through
out Northern and Central India and there have
been recorded instance of Lion hunt on the
outskirts of the Delhi. At present the Lions are
found only in the Gir forest in the district of
Junagadh in Gujarat. This forest reserve at one
time was the hunting reserve of the former
Maharaja of Junagadh and on his initiative Lions
were protected from their impending
death. The estimated present population of
Lions in Gir is around 359 and there is a
proposal to relocate few prides of Lions to a
new area to help preserve them and to protect
the existing Lions from any man made or
natural calamity
THE ASIATIC LION
6. Among the First Five in any jungle, the Indian
Rhinoceros is a regal creature that is next to no
one in strength and authority. India is fortunate
to be home to one of the most endangered
predators in the jungle today.
The Indian Rhinoceros or the Great one-horned
rhinoceros is the largest of the three Asian
rhinoceros. It has a single black horn about 20-60
cm long and grey-brown hide with skin folds,
which gives it a shield-plated appearance. Males
show enormous development of the neck folds.
INDIAN RHINOCEROS
7. Found mostly in India, the black buck is one of
the most photographed of wildlife species.
These antelopes are counted among the fastest
animal species on earth. They can run at a
speed of 50 miles/hour. This high speed and a
keen eyesight account for their protection
much. The Indian antelope is one of the most
elegant of all antelopes; it’s due to its striking
colour and wonderful spiral horns
Indian Leopard is one of the most exclusive and
successful members of Indian big cats. It is
widely known for its unique skills of climbing
over the trees, jumping and secretive habits.
Out of the all Leopard species in India, the Snow
Leopards of Ladakh (Northern Himalayan
Region) are quite a talk in Indian wildlife.
INDIAN BLACK BUCK
INDIAN LEOPARD
8. Over 1200 of the world's 8650 species are
found in India. India’s bird check- list is twice
the size of Europe and North America. This
abundance is attributable to the extraordinary
variety of habitat and climate, which include;
coastal mangrove forests, tropical deciduous
forests, coniferous & Sub-Alpine Forests, dense
evergreen forests, scrubland, grassland, open
cultivated land and desert – both hot and ice
cold.
The best time to visit India are the months
between October and May as, in addition to the
variety of resident species, migratory waterfowl,
raptors, starlings and a host of other species
are also to be seen all around the Indian
countryside.
