What are business incubators? Business incubators nurture the development of entrepreneurial companies to help them survive and grow. This happens during the start-up period when they are most vulnerable – typically 2-3 years. These programs provide their client companies with business support services and resources tailored to young firms. The most common goals of incubation programs are creating jobs in a community and enhancing a community’s entrepreneurial climate.
What are the different types of business incubators? Organization: Most North American business incubators (about 94 %) are nonprofit organizations focused on economic development. About 6 % of North American incubators are for-profit entities, usually set up to provide return on investments. Focus: 39 % focus on technology businesses. About 4 % focus on service businesses, serve niche markets or assist other types of businesses. 3 % serve manufacturing firms. 54 % are “mixed-use,” assisting a range of early-stage companies.
Who sponsors business incubators? About 31 % of North American business incubators are sponsored by economic development organizations. 21 % are sponsored by government entities. 20 % are sponsored by academic institutions. 8 % are sponsored by other types of organizations. 8 % of business incubators are “hybrids” with more than one sponsor. 4 % are sponsored by for-profit entities. 8 % of incubators have no sponsor or host organization. In many ways, all incubators rely upon the sponsorship of the community they serve.
How do incubators contribute to local and regional economies? Incubator graduates create jobs, revitalize neighborhoods and commercialize new technologies, thus strengthening local, regional and even national economies. Business incubators reduce the risk of small business failures. Historically, NBIA member incubators have reported that 87 percent of all firms that have graduated from their incubators are still in business.

Why a Data Center? There is rapidly growing demand for rural based web and server hosting facilities. Metropolitan areas are overbuilt and a prime target for mass central disruption in the event of catastrophe. Current business demand massive, redundant, quality, wide area network and internet traffic distribution. This will establish Douglas County as the meeting place for accessing the internet superhighway – we are strategically located between Silicon Valley and Seattle. This will stimulate the success of Douglas County by providing the infrastructure to attract the internet sector – brings high tech individuals and enterprise businesses to our community (benefits all regional development efforts).
