Ignition: Geek Parenting’s Lessons Learned…so far
“A 12yo presenting App Dev at TED? An 11yo presenting Spark to a tech conference? That’s crazy; my kids just want to play games!”
Do you remember what sparked your interest in technology? Everyone has a different story of how that spark ignited into a fire to #LearnAllTheThings.
In this talk, Cori Drew will share the experiences that–as a geek and a parent–left her surprised and enlightened, and will cover tactical ideas of how to ignite that fire in your own kids. Share in the retrospective that led her daughter from a video-gaming 7yo to an 11yo speaker, and walk away with concepts of how to carry our passion for programming to our youth.

AIDSAware is a first of its kind awareness movement which is a joint collaboration between PT Foundation and ruumzcauses whereby the public themselves become the vehicle for creating and spreading AIDS awareness utilizing social media, by taking a picture of themselves holding a AIDS/HIV related message on a piece of paper or card and posting and sharing their "photo messages" online. It incorporates a Public Service Announcement (PSA) angle whereby 42 prominent personalities and celebrities got together for free to shoot high quality photos holding their own messages on AIDS in the vein of the "Got Milk?" campaign from the United States. These shots will be compiled into a calendar and posters for PSAs etc.
Behind the scene videos and celebrity video messages were also shot and will be shared online to raise awareness and encourage further participation. The project hopes not only to create more awareness on HIV and AIDS prevention, but also to make it less taboo to discuss and talk about HIV and AIDS. Aidsaware advocates safer sex and not discriminating against people living with HIV. The target is to collect 13,000 photo messages by end December 2010 (as 13,000 Malaysians have already died from AIDS)
We aim to collect the largest public awareness photo exhibition from people of all walks of life, urging them to take their own "mug shots" or photos with their own hand written messages about HIV/AIDS.
PT Foundation will be going on ground to colleges, and shopping centres, educating the youth on HIV awareness. The video of celebs taking their own shots are aimed at encouraging participation and breaking past the taboo of the topic.
We are aiming for these shots to be printed and displayed in a photographic exhibition in a high traffic public area in January 2011.

Enhance Worldwide is an American not-for-profit working in Ethiopia. Enhance Worldwide envisions communities where girls and women have the skills to lead meaningful, dignified lives and have agency, autonomy, and aspirations.
Learn how SOS Children's Villages associations around the world made an impact for children and young people in 2015, helping to build a sustainable future; learn who partnered with SOS Children's Villages to make that impact.
A year ago, the Enhance Worldwide team was anxiously awaiting the launch of our programs in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A year later, we're toasting with tej, Ethiopian honey wine, to the girls and young women navigating a way out of poverty through our educational programs.
During this year, the focus has been to address issues on education, child health, malnutrition, child protection, women's empowerment and sustainable livelihoods. The programme activities were geared towards finding solutions for these core developmental issues confronting the poor and marginalized families in our communities.

1. UMMEED
UPDATE | 2016
Dear Friends of Ummeed ,
The air is crackling with excitement
and change at Ummeed, and we can’t
wait to tell you about it! We have an
exciting new partnership with Cipla
Foundation, thanks to which we
will be inaugurating the Ummeed
Training Center in October this year.
We believe this will help us expand
our reach by upskilling parents,
community workers, teachers,
therapists, and doctors to better
support children with disabilities and
their families, thus, creating more
resources in the wider community.
Plus, there’s an important new
addition to our leadership team – Dr.
Anita Limaye – who joined us this year
as our CEO Designate and will soon
be formally taking over as our CEO.
(No, I’m not going anywhere, but will
now invest my time in growing some
of our key programs, and in advocacy
for children with disabilities).
Our mid-year newsletter comes to
you riding on these winds of change.
Winds that I hope will move us closer
to an inclusive world for children with
disabilities.
We are so glad that you, our wonderful
Friends of Ummeed, have faith in us,
and share the belief that ‘The people
who are crazy enough to
think they can change the
world, are the ones who
do’ (Rob Siltanen).
With warm
regards,
Vibha.

corporate background where she had designed,
delivered, and measured impact the of trainings;
led large-ish operational teams, and set up new innovative processes, Hence, she fit
right in and it was soon evident to the Ummeed Team as well as to Anita that their paths
had crossed for a reason.
Over the past 6 months as CEO Designate, Anita has continued to support strategic
thinking, operational streamlining, process standardization, and impact measurement.
The team calls her Anita “Kirkpatrick” Limaye because she introduced the Kirkpatrick
model of training effectiveness measurement, enabling professionals to think through
and measure training impact more effectively. We wonder what other nicknames
Anita will earn in the years to come??

5. WORLD AUTISM AWARENESS DAY
April 2 is earmarked as World Autism Awareness Day. On this day 7
continents, 142 countries and 18,602 buildings turn blue as part of the
“Light It Up Blue” campaign initiated by the organization– ‘Autism Speaks’
Autism is a neurological condition that impacts how children speak,
understand, behave and make friends. Every child with Autism is unique.
Some may never speak; others may design computer programs but will
never be able to make friends.
World Autism Awareness Day is part of a global movement to raise
awareness regarding Autism and increase understanding about the
importance of early diagnosis and intervention, and the need for lifetime
support for children and families impacted by Autism.
This year, Ummeed made a huge impact with awareness campaigns:
We got the Taj Mahal Hotel and Army & Navy Building to Light It Up Blue
on the evening of April 2nd. Ummeed reached out and partnered with
various organizations through the campaign “I am MORE than autism”.
Dr. Koyeli Sengupta, Autism Intervention Team director, spoke
eloquently on Radio One and had a listenership of around 5 million! Our
Social media campaign had a reach of approx. 18,000, with our partners
we reached about 1,95,000! We also commemorated the day with celebrations at Ummeed–
we all dressed in blue, and staff members put up posters in several buildings and clinics.
We hope that the above endeavor has helped increase awareness about Autism and the
services that Ummeed offers.

6. Story From EIC
ONE FULL, ONE HALF
My own faith in Subhan started giving me abundant strength. I no longer wanted to hide
myself or my son from the glaring eyes of the world. I took him around with me everywhere
like any normal child. We were not sorry or uncomfortable carrying him in public places. I
was not embarrassed to seek help from people around. I did not mind telling them that he
was a ‘special’ child. I was no more scared of people’s curious looks and awkward questions.
As my mind opened up further I could feel a new hope springing in my hear. I felt happy, as
I was a ‘Special Mother’.
The special school (EIC) did Subham a lot of good. He was now much more confident,
adored by his teachers and friends. His speech improved and expressions became clearer.
His social interactions became praise-worthy.
Looking back at my own life, I feel that the spirit with which we can accept our life gracefully
is what matters ultimately, and it is love which nourishes us. Subhan has made me look
inwards. His handicap doesn’t disturb me any longer. He and I shall live with it and still be
happy. The mental strength he has given to me is endless.
One day, while travelling in a public bus with Subhan, the conductor smilingly gave me the
tickets saying “one full, one half”, it made me wonder, was my son really half? An incomplete
person? Was I really full? Complete in all respects?
Why do normal people feel that they are ‘full’ and others, like Subhan, are ‘half’ or ‘incomplete’?
Subhan’s world is complete in itself, pure and innocent; while our lives are full of deceit,
jealousies and ill-feelings. Subhan is complete in himself although a little different from us.
How could any person, or I, call him only a half?
The half, incomplete people are we, not him. The day the world sees him they way I do, it
will not be a one full or a one half world. It will be one full world- a world full of love, caring
and sharing.
Shabana and Subhan’s journey at Ummeed began when Subhan was 7
months old and was diagnosed with global delays with charge syndrome.
After four years of individual therapy sessions, Subhan and his mother
began their journey at Ummeed’s Early Intervention Center. On the proud
occasion of his graduation from the EIC at the age of 6 years, Shabana
succinctly described their special relationship in a heartwarming poem.
7. Training Center
NEW TRAINING CENTER LAUNCH
As Vibha mentioned
in her editorial, we
are extremely excited
to announce that the
Ummeed Training
Center will be going
live in October this
year!!
We believe that we
can create impact at
scale for the 50 million
children in India
with developmental
disabilities only through training and building capacity in others who can access young
children.
Based on our training performance over the last few years (see graph), we felt that it
was time for us to establish a dedicated training center that would allow us to work on
increasing awareness of developmental disabilities in the community, and building a cadre
of trained professionals and community workers who can prevent, diagnose, and manage
developmental disabilities more effectively. The training center strives to be a Center of
Influence for the wider developmental disabilities space beyond Ummeed.
We are so grateful to Cipla for
their belief in our vision and
for being our donor-partners
in this endeavor.
Almost as a sign, we recently
received formal accreditation
from the Indian Academy
of Pediatrics to offer
Developmental Pediatrics
fellowships! This is only the beginning, and we look forward to sharing many more milestones
and success stories with you in the days to come...
8. Ummeed Overseas
INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS
Over the last 6 months, we have had an opportunity to collaborate in big and small ways with
the international community; here's a glimpse into some of them:
• In Jan this year, we hosted MBA students from Boston University who were visiting India
to understand the healthcare systems here. Ummeed
was their peek into the role of not-for-profits in the
healthcare space in India.
• In March this year, Vibha spoke at a conference
of IIM graduates in Singapore...
• In May this year, we hosted students from the
University of Virginia, in partnership with Ycenter, a
global higher ed social enterprise, providing them
insights into social challenges and entrepreneurship
opportunities in India.
• COMING UP- In October this year, we will
host “A Room Full of Stories”; the first International
Narrative Therapy Conference in India in collaboration
with Narrative Practices Adelaide and Reauthoring
Teaching, . Jehanzeb Baldiwala, Director Mental Health Services, Daisy Daruwalla Bhatena
and the mental health team have been super-busy organizing the same. This conference
will be our effort towards increased awareness about the narrative approach and promoting
learning and sharing among professionals, making the mental health space in India more
curious, more empowering, and more multi-storied!
9. A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR DONORS!
We would like to thank all our Individual donors including those who participated and
