Richard grows taller and seeks the company of older boys. He and his friends spend their free time impersonating and cursing white people to release their anger about racial discrimination. One day, Richard finds his mother in a comatose state after having a stroke, and she is moved to Jackson to be with relatives. Richard stops eating and sleepwalks from the stress. He and his brother will live separately with different relatives. Richard chooses to live with his Uncle Clark, despite being jealous of his brother moving north. After enrolling in his new school, Richard gains acceptance from his peers by winning a fight. He finds motivation through intellectual activity after his suffering watching his ill mother's health decline.
