Richard sets fire to the curtains in his home at age 4 out of boredom and restlessness. Scared of being punished, he hides in the chimney but is found by his father and beaten by his mother. As a child, he acts out against his father's authority by killing the family cat. When his father leaves, his mother works as a cook to support the family, but Richard begins drinking and loitering at a young age. He teaches himself to read and is curious about race and inequality. His mother sends him to a charitable home, but he runs away and returns home, continuing to struggle with his father.
