I want to bring the past back to life through research and by providing access to historical sources. I do this by writing books, articles and blogs and giving lectures, not only for an academic, but also to a broader audience. Every past has a story and I am passionate to tell that story. For that I'm consulting archives, libraries and the internet. I also make resources available to others, so that they can write their own history.

This document discusses a photograph taken in 1931 of a Gypsy boy carrying a cello on his shoulder along a rural road in Hungary. The photograph was taken by Eva Besnyö and became very famous, seen as representing the difficult conditions faced by the Romani people. The document traces how the photographer and others eventually identified the boy's name as Janos and that he was part of a small street orchestra. It notes how this iconic photograph came to symbolize the "Long Road" and struggle that Roma and Sinti people faced to survive and provide a better future for their children. Middelburg, 20 April: Sinti & Roma in WOII and after
Zij be-

Limburgse Beek. Daarna studeerde hij Holocaust- en Genocide-
wetenschappen. In 2013 promoveerde hij aan de Universiteit van
Amsterdam op het proefschrift Vervolgd in Lim-
burg; Joden en Sinti in Nederlands-Limburg tijdens
de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het monumentale boek
wordt door iedereen beschouwd als hét standaard-
werk over dit onderwerp.
Peter Jorna is consultant Roma & Sinti Issues.
Was lid
