2. Meet our tour operators at ITB Berlin 2024
Welcome to this booklet for the ITB Berlin 2024.
We are proud to present exceptional products from our Ugandan and Ethiopian companies that are part of our
sustainable tourism projects. We are all aware that tourists become more and more interested in sustainable
holidays with a positive impact on the host country.
We invite you to explore the special offerings from the Ugandan and Ethiopian companies showcased in this
booklet. The products are special due to their positive impact on communities or the environment.
Meet the companies in person at this year’s ITB fair in Berlin in the Africa Hall. Join the panel discussion on
Wednesday 6th of March from 16:20-16:50 pm at Lighthouse stage in hall 4.1B or Thursday 7th of March from
15:15-15:50 pm at Lighthouse stage in hall 4.1B. During these discussions we present practical examples from
Ethiopia, Uganda, Jordan and Thailand, on how to link community products to markets.

4. “UTB is committed to sustainable tourism, Embracing sustainability is part of our
strategicwayforwardtoamoreresponsibleandethicaltourismindustryinUganda.”
Lily Ajarova
CEO Uganda Tourism Board
The multi-year Centre for the Promotion of Imports (CBI) project
Transforming Uganda Tourism (TUT) aims to develop the Ugandan
travel industry into a resilient, environmentally, and socially
conscious sector that offers sustainable and diverse tourism
products. A core objective is to enable tour operators to attract
travelers from a large diversity of sustainability market segments
that spend more, stay longer, visit year-round, and leave behind
added value for Uganda.
CBI supports the capacity building of Ugandan tour operators to
develop long-stay, sustainable, inclusive, and diverse tourism products
aligned with the demand from the European markets. We do this via
training and coaching of a selected group of tour operators. Topics
include business skills, sustainable product development, digital
marketing, certification, marketing, and promotion in the European
markets.
We also work on the creation of a service delivery system in the Uganda
tourism sector: training Ugandan consultants and facilitators to provide
fee-based services for tour operators.
The project cooperates with Ugandan organizations on the export
promotion of sustainable tourism products from Uganda. It aims to
connect Ugandan sustainable products to European markets via special
events at trade fairs, road shows, and via online channels. The project
furthermore pushes for sustainable tourism sector transformation, via a
tour operator Community of Practice to exchange ideas on sustainable
tourism, as well as via an innovation window for product development
competitions, and a project advisory group to identify key sustainability
issues from an overall sector perspective. Together with the Uganda
Tourism Board and private sector associations Uganda Tourism
Association (UTA) and Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO),
CBI will carry out activities to create systemic change. The project is
being implemented in 2021-2026.

6. Adventure tourism is an important sector for generating income
and jobs in Ethiopia. The destination has unique features to offer,
including breathtaking mountains, volcanic landscapes, cultural
sites, and mammals and birds, making it very attractive to European
market segments. Ethiopia has the potential to attract higher-
spending European tourists, who often value sustainability and
enjoy authentic community experiences.
In 2019, the Centre for the Promotion of Imports from developing
countries (CBI) started the Tourism Ethiopia project. In this project,
CBI supports Ethiopian tour operators to develop more sustainable
tourism tour packages and market these in the European market.
The project focuses on sustainability, product diversification, destination
marketing and management, and community engagement. The 18 tour
operators in our project present themselves at the website: Ethiopia
Travel Specialists - A collective of sustainable and endorsed Inbound
Tour Operators (ethiopiaspecialists.com).

Starting in 2024, CBI developed a new project to integrate local
communities into the tourism value chain. This involves developing
good practice examples within Ethiopian communities through
collaboration with tour operators, communities, and the Ethiopian
government. The goal is to improve tourism products and connect them
to European markets.
At ITB 2024, you can find great examples of community experiences
in Ethiopia. Visit us at stand 217A in Hall 4.1B to witness the positive
impact of community tourism in Ethiopia.
