- In BCS’s many years of developing database extensions for technologists we hear the same objections over and over:“My files are too large to load into a database – load times would be prohibitive.” “My files are too complex – they don’t fit the column/row relational model.”“I have too many files – loading them would be a real chore!”So, we’ve developed a software product called the “Universal File Interface”, or UFI for short, that allows users to index and query files without having to actually load them into a database!
- UFI maps file components to columns of virtual tables. It can map several files to a single table, thereby creating a virtual table that represents the union of the data in all the files. UFI is architected as a database plug-in that communicates with externalfiletype-specific programs, called “adapters”. We’ve developedadapters for several file types, some of which are listed in this slide, and we’ve written an Adapter Programmer’s Library that anyone can use to create new adapters for other file formats.
- A popular demo on our website – one that uses UFI – is the “Weatherdemo”, shown in this picture. Basically what it allows you to do is zoom and pan around the contiguous United States and look at the forecasts made for a particular day and time in the future, and then compare those forecasts with the actual weather recorded on that day and time.
- For example, clicking on one of the teardrops will give you a textual display of how the forecast compared with the actual conditions.
- Another popular demo on our website is our “Winds” Demo, where we display animated gifs produced from gridded wind forecast files, again using UFI, as is explained in more detail on our website.
