18. The Gardener and The Bamboo
(Short Story)
narrated by John Enrico C. Torralba
Once upon a time, there was a gardener tending plants in a field near a
spring. He loved his plants in that garden very much. But he has the most
favorite of all his plants, that is the bamboo.
The bamboo is very tall and beautiful. Every day, the gardener goes up to
the ridge and waters his plants. He watered the bamboo last because he
wanted to observe it for a long time and talk to it. When the gardener
comes, the bamboo dances. The gardener is very happy when the bamboo
does this.
But there came a time when there was a severe drought in the plains. The
water source stream is very dry. Many of the people's domestic animals and
plants died because of the lack of water. The gardener knew there was
plenty of water in the valley but he did not know how to bring it to the
plains. He remembered his bamboo plant. So he went to his garden and
talked to the bamboo.
19. "How are you, Bamboo?" the gardener greeted. The
bamboo was very happy to see the gardener. It danced with
joy.
"I'm fine, my master. Shall we talk again?" bamboo
responded.
"Not now. I came because I needed your help. I wanted to
use you," answered the gardener.
"I'm ready, Master," answered the bamboo happily.
"But there is one condition. In order for you to help me, I
have to cut you. I have to cut your bodies," said the
gardener sadly.
Bamboo was worried by what he heard.
"Master, I thought I was your friend? Why did you have to
cut me off?" bamboo asked sadly.
20. I don't want to hurt you. But in order for you to help me and the many
people in the plains, I have to cut you. If you're not ready, I can't use you,"
explained the gardener.
The bamboo is very weak because he is afraid of the pain he will feel. But
because he loved his boss, he agreed to cut it. The gardener took heart and
began to cut the
bamboo Bamboo felt great pain. When the bamboo trunks were cut, the
gardener said that he also had to cut the branches.
"Master, I think you want to kill me," complained the bamboo. The gardener
did not answer. But because the bamboo saw that his master was serious,
he also agreed to his wish.
The gardener regained his composure and began to cut the bamboo
branches. Bamboo felt severe pain again.
"Sorry again, Bamboo, but I have one more thing to do. It's too late. I have
to empty your body," explained the gardener.
The bamboo is angry. But the gardener explained again. "I can't use you if
you don't agree," said the gardener seriously.
21. I dBecause of this, the bamboo again agreed to what the gardener wanted
to do. Using his mind again, the gardener removed the inside of the bamboo
trunk. The bamboo felt a lot of pain. But now, the bamboo is ready and it
has lost consciousness.
The gardener joins the bamboo trunks together to form a tube. He put the
end of it in the spring and put the other end in the dry stream. Before long,
water began to flow from the ridge and the creek had water. The people
were overjoyed and saved their plants and animals, as well as themselves.
The gardener still goes to his garden every day and waters the plants. As
usual, he goes to the bamboo area and waters it. Before long, there was
something wrong with it. "How are you, Bamboo?" the gardener greeted.
The bamboo answered hesitantly. "Look how you helped us," said the
gardener, pointing to the plain. "Many thanks to you."
The bamboo smiled when he saw what the gardener pointed out. And the
two talked happily again.
