27. Si Pagong at Kuneho (The tortoise and the rabbit)
by Allan A. Ortiz
A happy and beautiful day welcomed animals at forest. Every
morning the animals play in the stream. Everyone was surprised
when Kuneho came and wanted to play with them. "Who wants
to challenge me to a race?" asked Kuneho to all the animals
present. "Why would we play with you, you can cheat in the
game," said deer. "Yes. When you, the deer and the goat
competed in running, they had an accident on the way because
of the traps you set for them," duck said annoyed. "Why should I
deceive them? If they were harmed, it was their fault because
they were not careful," answered Kuneho. "Let's be friends. Let's
not pay attention to Kuneho," Chicken invited the accompanying
animals.
28. Everyone was surprised to hear a voice answering Kuneho's
challenge. "I!" pagong shouted. "You're the one who's going to
challenge me in the race? Maybe in a month until you get to the
end because you move slowly," said Kuneho followed by loud
laughter. "You will surely lose to him, Pagong." Goose said worriedly.
"Yes, you will definitely be like us," said deer. "Don't worry," Pagong
said to the animals. "Whoever reaches the end of the creek on the
side of the hill first will win," said Kuneho. The two got ready and
Kuneho started counting. "One, two, run!" cried Kuneho and ran
quickly. Kuneho had already run far but Pagong is hardly far from
the beginning. All the animals watching were surprised when
Pagong turned towards the creek. Everyone was just so happy to
see Pagong jump into the water and start swimming. Kuneho
stopped in the middle of his running. "Where is Pagong?
29. Kuneho said to himself. He returned to Pagong but he fell into
the trap that he himself made. Kuneho's right was broken.
"Help!" cried Kuneho. Pagong heard Kuneho's cry and
immediately went to him. "Help me, Pagong." Kuneho said
begging. "I will help you if you promise not to brag and not to
do something stupid like this," said Pagong to Kuneho. "I
promise," replied Kuneho. “Pagong bit the leg strap "Thank
you, Pagong, for your help. If you hadn't helped me, the
hunters might have caught me," said Kuneho. The two
continued the contest. Pagong swam in the creek again and
Kuneho walked to the end of the creek. Everyone was happy
when Pagong won the contest. From then on, Kuneho never
boasted and did something silly to his friends.
