The University of London
The University of London is unlike many
other universities. It consists of 19 self-
governing colleges and 10 other smaller
     specialist research institutes, which
include UCL, LSE, SOAS, King’s College,
     Queen Mary, Birkbeck, Goldsmiths and
Royal Holloway. In many ways these
     colleges are considered universities
in their own right: they set their own
entrance criteria for their courses and
they offer their own services to students.
All students from all the colleges and
institutes are also University of London
students, making them part of a
community of over 120,000 students and
giving them access to many services in
     London.

Study Programme

The LAMB Mini-MBA introduces you to 4 key MBA subjects and the Harvard Case Study Method.

   Human Resource Management

For this module the two subjects of International Human Resources Management and Leadership & Organisation
are brought together in order to give an account of the nature of work within the modern corporation.

   Marketing

This module aims to develop an understanding of the managerial marketing vocabulary and concepts. Students
successfully completing this course will understand the historical development of marketing, popular marketing
concepts such as the Mix and STP and learn to appreciate academic consultants such as Drucker, Levitt and Kotler.

   Strategy

This module provides the student with an understanding of how corporate and business strategy fits into the
organisation and running of a company or multi-company corporation. It will introduce students to how a firm
can achieve sustainable international competitive advantage and to evaluate the factors that need to analyse
a firm’s external environment and internal core competences. Students will learn how corporate strategy is
   formulated.

   Business Analysis

This module analyses corporate management by examining two interconnected themes: (a) literature and (b)
the external macro and microenvironment. This outlines relevant management/strategy literatures, introduces
political economy debates and demonstrates how market, financial and productive analysis can be used to
develop empirically based analysis of strategies and their outcomes.

   The Harvard Case Study Method

When students are presented with a case study, they place themselves in the role of the decision maker as
they read through the situation and identify the problem they are faced with. The next step is to perform the
necessary analysis—examining the causes and considering alternative courses of action to come to a set of
   recommendations.

To get the most out of cases, students read and reflect on the case, and then meet in learning teams before class
to “warm up” and discuss their findings with other classmates. In class—under the questioning and guidance of
the lecturer—students probe underlying issues, compare different alternatives, and finally, suggest courses of
action in light of the organization’s objectives. This is the special moments that pull everything you have learned
into focus : when theory, practice, experience and talent all come to one sharp point – a decision that shapes a
definitive course of action; when it’s no longer an issue of what can be done, but of what you will do.

     International Human Resource Management

For this course the two subjects of international human resource management and leadership and organisations
are brought together in order to give an account of this within the modern corporation. We have chosen what we
see as the key dimensions of managing people at work, namely: selecting and recruiting staff from external and
internal labour markets, rewarding and motivating them, fitting them into an organisational structure and culture,
and seeing how they cope with organisational change, much of it driven by the internationalisation of business in
the modern world. Overall, we have utilised what could be called a macro, sociological or organisational approach
to the subject of people at work.

   International Marketing

This course aims to develop an advanced understanding of the managerial marketing vocabulary of concepts,
maxims and normative models within an international context drawing on issues in differing domains of
practice, including the public sector. Students will understand the historical development of marketing from its
roots in classical economics in the USA to the normative tradition promoted by academic consultants such as
Drucker, Levitt and Kotler. Students would furthermore demonstrate an understanding of popular normative
marketing concepts such as the Mix and STP through application in practical case scenarios, learn to appreciate
the scope of marketing activity in diverse sectors including the non-profit and develop an awareness of some
of the work that critiques the practical and theoretical assumptions of the managerial marketing tradition and
which explores the idea of marketing as an intellectual domain.

   International Strategy

This course provides the student with an understanding of how Corporate and Business Strategy fits into the
organisation and running of a company or multi-company corporation. It will introduce students to the way in
which a firm can achieve sustainable competitive advantage and develop the corporation internationally. It will
enable students to evaluate the factors that need to be considered in analysing a firm’s external environment as
well as the internal core competences of a firm. Students will learn how to formulate the strategy for a firm and
will understand the nature of corporate and international strategy.

   International Business Analysis

This course analyses corporate management by examining two interconnected themes: (a) literature and
debates, and (b) the macro and micro background. The first theme presents a form of business analysis that
draws on three sources. First, it outlines relevant management/strategy literatures. Second, it introduces political
economy debates, which help us to understand the changing structural context around firms and industry. Third,
it demonstrates how market, financial and productive analysis can be used to develop empirically based stories
about strategies and their outcomes. The second theme looks at both the economic/product market context and
the use of business analysis methods to allow case study work.

     Corporate Finance

This course will provide an overview of corporate finance in both a domestic and an international setting. It will
explain the valuation of real investments and their financing as well as dividend decisions. By developing an
understanding of international capital markets, the course will identify the main trends in mergers and acquisition
activity. Students will be able to apply the main principles of financial theory to contemporary commercial
problems and understand the problems of investment appraisal and the relative merits of different approaches.
This will enable them also to evaluate the consequences of a proposed takeover or merger, and to analyse the
current state of the international financial markets.

     Global Financial Markets

Global Financial Markets is concerned with the nature of the capital securities, which are traded on the
international money and capital markets, and with the operation of those markets themselves. Over the last 20
years, there has been an explosion in the variety of securities and tradable assets, fuelled by deregulation and
paralleled by an equally explosive growth in the technical and academic development of the discipline of finance.
This development came about because of a number of important theoretical advances: the development of the
theory of risk, the formal development of the concept of arbitrage and, of equal importance, the development of
sophisticated information processing systems. This programme will give a student a understanding of how the
     Capital Markets work.

     International Entrepreneurship

This course will provide students with the intellectual and practical background to equip would-be entrepreneurs
with the skills and knowledge to set up their own international companies successfully. Students will gain an
understanding of the key differences between large companies and SMEs and learn to appreciate the role of
start-up and entrepreneurial activity in the hi-tech and bio-pharm sectors. It will also provide students with an
understanding of the financing options available to start-up and developing companies.

  • 31. Study Programme The LAMB Mini-MBA introduces you to 4 key MBA subjects and the Harvard Case Study Method. Human Resource Management For this module the two subjects of International Human Resources Management and Leadership & Organisation are brought together in order to give an account of the nature of work within the modern corporation. Marketing This module aims to develop an understanding of the managerial marketing vocabulary and concepts. Students successfully completing this course will understand the historical development of marketing, popular marketing concepts such as the Mix and STP and learn to appreciate academic consultants such as Drucker, Levitt and Kotler. Strategy This module provides the student with an understanding of how corporate and business strategy fits into the organisation and running of a company or multi-company corporation. It will introduce students to how a firm can achieve sustainable international competitive advantage and to evaluate the factors that need to analyse a firm’s external environment and internal core competences. Students will learn how corporate strategy is formulated. Business Analysis This module analyses corporate management by examining two interconnected themes: (a) literature and (b) the external macro and microenvironment. This outlines relevant management/strategy literatures, introduces political economy debates and demonstrates how market, financial and productive analysis can be used to develop empirically based analysis of strategies and their outcomes. The Harvard Case Study Method When students are presented with a case study, they place themselves in the role of the decision maker as they read through the situation and identify the problem they are faced with. The next step is to perform the necessary analysis—examining the causes and considering alternative courses of action to come to a set of recommendations. To get the most out of cases, students read and reflect on the case, and then meet in learning teams before class to “warm up” and discuss their findings with other classmates. In class—under the questioning and guidance of the lecturer—students probe underlying issues, compare different alternatives, and finally, suggest courses of action in light of the organization’s objectives. This is the special moments that pull everything you have learned into focus : when theory, practice, experience and talent all come to one sharp point – a decision that shapes a definitive course of action; when it’s no longer an issue of what can be done, but of what you will do. www.lamb-business-school.com 31

We have chosen what we see as the key dimensions of managing people at work, namely: selecting and recruiting staff from external and internal labour markets, rewarding and motivating them, fitting them into an organisational structure and culture, and seeing how they cope with organisational change, much of it driven by the internationalisation of business in the modern world. Overall, we have utilised what could be called a macro, sociological or organisational approach to the subject of people at work. 32 London Academy of Management & Business
  • 33. Certificate Programmes (continues) International Marketing This course aims to develop an advanced understanding of the managerial marketing vocabulary of concepts, maxims and normative models within an international context drawing on issues in differing domains of practice, including the public sector. Students will understand the historical development of marketing from its roots in classical economics in the USA to the normative tradition promoted by academic consultants such as Drucker, Levitt and Kotler. Students would furthermore demonstrate an understanding of popular normative marketing concepts such as the Mix and STP through application in practical case scenarios, learn to appreciate the scope of marketing activity in diverse sectors including the non-profit and develop an awareness of some of the work that critiques the practical and theoretical assumptions of the managerial marketing tradition and which explores the idea of marketing as an intellectual domain. International Strategy This course provides the student with an understanding of how Corporate and Business Strategy fits into the organisation and running of a company or multi-company corporation. It will introduce students to the way in which a firm can achieve sustainable competitive advantage and develop the corporation internationally. It will enable students to evaluate the factors that need to be considered in analysing a firm’s external environment as well as the internal core competences of a firm. Students will learn how to formulate the strategy for a firm and will understand the nature of corporate and international strategy. International Business Analysis This course analyses corporate management by examining two interconnected themes: (a) literature and debates, and (b) the macro and micro background. The first theme presents a form of business analysis that draws on three sources. First, it outlines relevant management/strategy literatures. Second, it introduces political economy debates, which help us to understand the changing structural context around firms and industry. Third, it demonstrates how market, financial and productive analysis can be used to develop empirically based stories about strategies and their outcomes. The second theme looks at both the economic/product market context and the use of business analysis methods to allow case study work. “We believe that the Management Certificate programmes are ideal both for building up Continuing Professional Development hours – a requirement for membership of many professional associations and regulatory bodies - and developing a further understanding of a specific management area.” John Florey Director, LAMB www.lamb-business-school.com 33
  • 34. Management Certificates Certificate Programmes (continues) Corporate Finance This course will provide an overview of corporate finance in both a domestic and an international setting. It will explain the valuation of real investments and their financing as well as dividend decisions. By developing an understanding of international capital markets, the course will identify the main trends in mergers and acquisition activity. Students will be able to apply the main principles of financial theory to contemporary commercial problems and understand the problems of investment appraisal and the relative merits of different approaches. This will enable them also to evaluate the consequences of a proposed takeover or merger, and to analyse the current state of the international financial markets. Global Financial Markets Global Financial Markets is concerned with the nature of the capital securities, which are traded on the international money and capital markets, and with the operation of those markets themselves. Over the last 20 years, there has been an explosion in the variety of securities and tradable assets, fuelled by deregulation and paralleled by an equally explosive growth in the technical and academic development of the discipline of finance. This development came about because of a number of important theoretical advances: the development of the theory of risk, the formal development of the concept of arbitrage and, of equal importance, the development of sophisticated information processing systems. This programme will give a student a understanding of how the Capital Markets work. International Entrepreneurship This course will provide students with the intellectual and practical background to equip would-be entrepreneurs with the skills and knowledge to set up their own international companies successfully. Students will gain an understanding of the key differences between large companies and SMEs and learn to appreciate the role of start-up and entrepreneurial activity in the hi-tech and bio-pharm sectors. It will also provide students with an understanding of the financing options available to start-up and developing companies. “I am planning to enrol on a Certificate Programme in order to broaden my knowledge in a short period of time.” Mirkazem Jafarikenari Pre-Masters Student David Game College 34 London Academy of Management & Business
