UAB SEA was formed in 2008 to educate and engage UAB science and engineering trainees on scientific policies and issues through monthly board meetings, a seminar series, and community outreach projects. The organization aims to involve graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, undergraduate students, faculty and the community at large. The first seminar of the semester will feature Vivian Figures, an Alabama State Senator, to discuss education issues. UAB SEA also conducts community outreach on topics like energy conservation and STEM education.

During his campaigns, Holt found voters cared more about daily issues like healthcare rather than science issues, though he did receive support from 14 Nobel Prize winners in his field.
