The word “fiction” has been
derived from Latin word
“fetus” which means “to form”.
Fiction refers to prose in
which imaginary stories either
realistic or unrealistic are told;
which include stories, novels,
etc.
Fiction refers to literature
created from the imagination
and truth.
Mysteries, science fiction,
romance, fantasy, thrillers are
all fiction genres.

7. Two major types of Fiction
• Literary fiction:
Literary fiction is a term that has come into common usage in the early
1960s. The term is principally used to distinguish "serious fiction" which is a
work that claims to hold literary merit, in comparison from genre fiction and
popular fiction.
• Commercial fiction:
Commercial Fiction is fiction with broad appeal and the potential to sell lots
of copies. In other words, Commercial Fiction is written in a way (story and
style) that's accessible and likely to be enjoyed by the average reader
