Editor's Notes

  • #2 Thanks Debbie For those of you who don’t know me… Some 12 months ago barely aware of Twitter Meet and form Dot Future Social media workshops Now use it for my business and clients
  • #3 Like most things, this can be a massive subject the more one delvs into it, but with only 20 minutes today, we’ll just look at the basics of: LIST Who’s using twitter at the moment? Who is finding it an effective tool for their business? Yes – hold that thought and I’ll come back to it No – ok then hopefully this will put you on right track
  • #4 Whats it all about?? David Eggerton at Commotion DotFuture colleague like waking up in the morning with an audience sitting and waiting Freaky Prefer to think of Pub or Party Walk in glance around No effort walk out Make effort meet new people, exchange ideas, have a good time – enhance experience Boring/shouting sales pitch they will walk away from you All very similar in Twitterland
  • #5 First of all, lets take a brief look at it. Twitter is one of many social media platforms or you might have heard word channels. Find right medium for you and your target market Developed initially for personal as facebook but now progressed to business with over 75m users Form of microblogging with only 140 characters – positive not negative – allows one to really focus on the message and to be concise It’s a source of news and because its held in real time its also very reactive and fast moving
  • #6 key question today - how use twitter promote business - brief summary Not direct sales channel, build trust and develop relationships Nos of followers less important than quality of engagement Method of communication - Allows put oneself or business in front of much wider audience by engaging, interacting, developing trust and relationships… lead to website Disseminate information and announcements People will talk about your business on SM – better to hear – social media policy for staff! Conduct research, ask questions, look at what other people are doing, its all very visible Demonstrate thought leadership – differ business to business - demonstrate your expertise, who you are, what you know and how you can help Who thought effective – one or more of these?
  • #7 This is where the majority of people get stuck, before they’ve even started! DotFuture some detail - work out what you want to achieve before working out what you want to say. Set aside some time each day. Ideas bank Add photo rather than logo small business – people buy from people, brand colours/style background, bio and company email address. Promote twitter address on marketing comms Twitter comes with some basic tools #symbol prefixes a word and is a way of bringing attention to a common topic and allowing others who are searching for that topic, to find it more easily – Charity Tuesday & Follow Friday Make use of the List function by organising and grouping your followers & linking to your Linked In page, blogs and website Use the RT and Quote functions to forward on tweets of interest and/or add your own note Search for individuals, companies, discussions which may be of interest or of use in your line of work Monitor your results – can’t go into this in details but the basics would be no of followers, no of mentions and RT’s, no of lists you feature in. Unfort not 1 complete and comprehensive tool and whether one suits will depend on what you’re looking for. Mashable or Social Media Examiner to see what they have to say on subject Good source of info. Monitter to monitor twitter converersations
  • #8 Sorry don’t think such a thing perfect tweet but…. Identified 140 characters Research industry subjects & start conversations Use bit.ly – headline why click on a link Sell = spam 140 characters – allow 25 leave 115 Very easy thrash out message on smart phone but spell…
  • #9 No rules but best practice If someone opens a door what do you do? Exactly, it’s the same here if you gain a new follower, they are in effect, opening a new door for you, send them a thank you! Be consistent and tweet regularly, you will not gain followers by disappearing for weeks on end and then blasting out a load of content. You can use tweet deck or hootsuite for scheduling There’s no rules, but would you swear in front of your customers? No, well then don’t do it here Let personality shine through! Your tone of voice needs to be friendly and communicative to engage, but not overly familiar and certainly not a broadcast like a newsreader I’ve put 80/20 rule because content suggest 80% business and 20% pleasure Chat to friends separate account
  • #10 Summary process for engaging and interacting with new contacts as well as customers Pointers for starting and a few basic best practice ideas to observe Form part of marketing platform – at least one Thanks for listening to me My twitter address – love to hear Dot future workshop Any questions?
