2. Analysis Of All That Heaven Allows
The development and implementation of 3D in popular cinema shares many
similarities with the introduction of color into films. If we examine the histories of
both technologies, Moana s color analogue is Douglas Sirk s melodrama All That
Heaven Allows. In terms of timeline, both come at a point when the art form is still in
between the astonishment and absorption phases of using the technology. Though All
That Heaven Allows was made around fifteen years after the first technicolorfilms,
the movie is still designed to have the audience notice its beautifully colored shots.
Most of the films landscapes feel oversaturated and doctored. These exterior shots
often feel more like paintings to appreciate rather than providing context for the
film s interior shots. At the same time, color doesn t define the story and characters
in the same way as early Technicolor films like Michael Curtiz s The Adventures of
Robin Hood. In those instances color acted as a constant signal of where we were in
the narrative, and formed strong associations between characters and individual
colors. In All That Heaven Allows, the color schemes don t drastically change to suit
the narrative, but they re still far from fading into the background. Sirk uses color
more as an emotional cue, nudging the audience into feeling the drama of the film.
Ultimately, All That Heaven Allows is a film made in the liminal period between
astonishment and absorption of color.
Moana uses 3D in a similar manner to All That Heaven Allows, as a noticeable but
ultimately auxiliary narrative tool. In earlier digital 3D films, negative and
positive parallax were used to create discrete new worlds. Avatar and Coraline were
crafted to feel entirely different when the protagonists ventured into a different
environment, similar to the color phases of Robin Hood. Moana, on the other hand,
uses 3D in a way that pervades the entire film. Rather than build new worlds, Moana
uses 3D for the emotional effect, bringing characters and objects towards and away
from the audience to make us feel. Though the purpose of the film is not to showcase
3D technology, we can t help but notice stuff flying at us during dynamic sequences
like How Far I ll Go. Rather than switching
3. Mrs. Mallard In The Awakening
Mrs. Mallard retires alone to her room and what first appears to be grief turns
quickly to a realization that she is now free . She looks out the window in her
bedroom and sees the tops of trees that were all aquiver with the new spring life .
Mrs. Mallard has apparently been in a relationship for which she either regrets or
has over time led to unhappiness. The trees out her bedroom window must represent
to her a new chance at life. As spring follows winter, when the plants and trees die
off, they are reborn again come spring. Mrs. Mallard must feel herself that the death
of her husband is a rebirth for her.
The delicious breath of rain was in the air . When a baby is born it takes its first
breath to begin its new life. This may ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I imagine from the brief description that we get about Mrs. Mallards married live, that
her unhappy marriage has taken the music out of life for her. Now she hears the
faint notes of music which may be symbolic that the music of life is now available to
her.
Mrs. Mallard sees that countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves . The word
twittering makes me think of a child waiting for Christmas morning, or me when
our plane landed in Florida and I was anticipating Universal Orlando. In this story I
imagine Mrs. Mallord twittering about what her life will now be like, the freedoms
she can now enjoy from being single again, and the butterflies of excitement as she
thought about all the possibilities that now lay before her.
Mrs. Mallard must see her life before and the possibilities of her future very
differently. There were patches of blue sky showing here and there through the
clouds that had met and piled one above the other in the west facing her window .
Thus far her life has been clouded and dreary. Now the clouds are beginning to part
and the sun will be coming out shortly. This metaphor gives her hope that the sky is
now the limit. However, Mrs. Mallard dies from heart failure caused by what can be
argued as either joy or disappointment . This metaphor leads me to believe that it was
indeed disappointment that caused her heart failure. Suddenly the clearing of clouds
and
4. Influence Of Patronage On Jackson Pollock
The Influence of Patronage on Jackson Pollock Art History Scott Mathew Jan. 21st,
2018 Introduction Jackson Pollock, a famous artist representing the summit era of
abstractionism, witnessed that America took place of Paris in art world. However,
his artworks were utilized as an American political weapon during the Cold War to
justify the impression on Western polities. This essay focuses on the influence some
personal or governmental patronage on Pollock s art. Some conspiracy theories even
believed that it was the government that deliberately promoted the mainstream of
abstractionism. Pollock s Early Life Pollock experienced his childhood without much

The thing worthy noticing was that in the year Pollock started his drip paintings,
even though people liked them, but no one really considered them, let along
buying them. Surprisingly, just in next year, forty his paintings were purchased, of
course, in very high prices, and fifty two were bought in the year after that year.
Therefore, some attribute this phenomena to the governmental propaganda. With
this, America not only attacked arts and polities in the USSR, but also gained the
reputations in art world that there would be the new art movement leading by the
US. As a result, Pollock earned a lot of money and prestige, and pressure too. For
entire four years, Pollock had drip painted again and again. At last, he realized that
he could not create anything new. Because he did not have great sketching skills, he
could not draw something else. The only thing he could do was drip paintings. He
had tried some new inventions, but, like paintings he draw before, no one was
willing to spend any for those. After the four year, he stopped painting and hated it.
The aura shackled him to be a drip paintings ist, and he did not have the ability to
struggle it off. As a man full of emotional strength, absolutely he could not stand such
position. And, to the end, he
5. Losing Control Essay
Some people may say that having control over someone or something can bring
satisfaction and a sense of power. In the an article called Gunman Kills Himself
After Hostage Drama (584) written by Charles P. Wallace and Tim Waters loss of
control and the feeling of being helplessness makes Robert B. Rose commit a last act
of asserting control over himself. In another article written by Martin E.P. Seligman
called On Learned Helplessness (585) the feeling of loosing control of oneself is
something that can cause someone to do things that they thought they would never
do. What is hard to understand is that some of the things the someone may commit

In the case of Robert, he was determined to gain, back some of the control that he
had loosed of himself to his debilitating illness. Rose checked into the hotel late
Saturday night, went out and returned with the seventeenth year old, and went to
his room (584) . Robert was in a state of depression Seligman would say that he was
experiencing a drive for competence is from m point of view, a drive to avoid
helplessness (586) . Robert wanted to regain control of his life so by holding
hostage the seventeen year old girl he felt that he had regained control over her. In a
police department said, he pointed the rifle at the girl, threatened her life, warned that
he would commit suicide, and ordered her to take off her clothes (584) after she took
off her cloths he threw them out the window by doing this he had total control over
the girl and that was what he wanted. Rose new he had no control over his life due
to the illness that hindered him but he wanted that control that he lost over his life
back. As he held the girl hostage, he played out certain events that gave him a sense
of control which witch is what he wanted. As police negotiated with him Rose
reportedly asked to see a Roman Catholic, priest and have food brought to the room
(585) by doing this he was gaining control of the situation at hand because the police

7. Supply and Demand Simulation
Supply and Demand Simulation Summary
University of Phoenix
ECO360, Economics for Business I
The Supply/Demand simulation involves acting as property manager for GoodLife
Management in the fictional town of Atlantis. GoodLife Management manages seven
apartment complexes in Atlantis. The property manager is expected to adjust the
monthly rental rate of two bed rental apartments and the quantity of apartments
supplied based on the market trends. Factors that influence the supply and demand for
apartments include personal preferences, economy, income, and rental rates. Each of
these factors affect the ratio of vacant and occupied apartments. Decisions regarding
supply, demand, and price require careful evaluation. Regular ... Show more content

The equilibrium rental rate was then higher than before, but the equilibrium quantity
was less.
The last situation in the simulation introduced the concept of governmental price
controls for monthly rental rates. Since the price ceiling was lower than the
equilibrium price, the quantity demanded was higher than the quantity supplied.
Goodlife could not afford to rent all apartments at the ceiling price. Other forms of
revenue, such as increased key deposits, had to be implemented. Consequently, there
was an excess demand, creating a supply shortage. Goodlife was then able to be more
restrictive when selecting renters, which can affect economic and social aspects of
the community. The imbalance of demand and supply can lead to discrimination in
tenants and an increase in ancillary charges, such as key charges. As illustrated in the
simumation, price controls can have negative consequences on the housing supply.
In conclusion, the simulation confronted the user with a variety of situations that
affected the supply and demand of rental units. The prices and quantity supplied had
to be adjusted according to the factors affecting the supply and demand. The key
components from the reading material that were reinforced in the simulation were
supply and demand, shifts in supply and demand, equilibrium, and price ceilings.

В«Life is full of compensationsВ» Somerset Maugham William Somerset
Maugham is one of the best known English writers of the 20th century. William
Somerset Maugham (1874 1966), a well known English novelist, short story writer,
playwright and essayist, was the son of a British diplomat. He was born in 1874 in
Paris and educated at King s School in Canterbury, studied painting in Paris, went to
Heidelberg University in Germany and studied to be a doctor at St. Thomas Hospital
in England. Although Somerset Maugham did not denounce the contemporary social
order, he was critical of the morals, the narrow mindedness and hypocrisy of
bourgeois society. Maugham became internationally celebrated; his plays were
performed all over the world. Now... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The indirect one is when the character is revealed through actions, thoughts, speech
and appearance. The narrator was a round and dynamic character, that indicates the
idea that his character was complicated and exhibited numerous traits, he seemed
like a real man; his dynamics was seen in the structure of the text: in the first
paragraph there was stated that giving advice is a dangerous thing, but the whole
story showed the positive outcome of the act of it. The narrator, first, was willing
to give the advice, he was a little bit careless, but in the introduction he decided that
it was a dangerous thing, he changed his views. The narrator was a doctor, but he
did not practice. Instead of it he travelled and wrote a book about Spain. I can say
that he preferred writing to medicine, he was versatile, liked to try new things and
feelings, and he was interested in life. Some time later he did not want to give
advices, so he was not eager to take responsibility for other people lives; it does not
mean that he was a coward; it means that he did not want them to do unchangeable
mistakes in their lives. He was observant, because he managed to define each
feature of Stephens s appearance and behavior, each detail of Stephens s consulting
room. He liked to listen to other people stories of their lives, he was not indifferent.
He gave a good advice to Stephens, so he was wise enough. He creates the image of

9. The Second Branch Of The Mabinogi And Sir Orfeo Use...
In Medieval Literature, a variety of borders are often used to serve different
purposes but mainly to advance the plot through border crossings. The purpose of
this essay is to consider the extent to which the authors of The Second Branch of the
Mabinogi and Sir Orfeo use borders and border crossings to advance the text through
a consideration of geographical, political and spiritual borders. The Second Branch of
the Mabinogi relies mostly on the constant and unresolvable political border
throughout the whole text to frame the story and drive the actions, whereas Sir Orfeo
uses the physical, political and spiritual border in equal weighting in order to advance
the plot.
The political border in The Second Branch of the Mabinogi exists to ... Show more

This is later shown when a messenger of Matholwch relays that, He wishes to unite
your two families, lord [...] he wishes to join together the Island of the Mighty and
Ireland (p. 23). Although this places an emphasis on unity between the two
countries, the political barrier is still present because it is not until That answer
was taken to Matholwch (p. 23) that he entered Wales. In this way, the political and
geographical borders are tied together because the political situation between the
countries dictates the crossing of the geographical border. A further instance of
this is when Branwen sends a bird with a message to cross the sea from Ireland to
Wales. This results in The men of the Island of the Mighty coming over, having
heard of my punishment and dishonour (p. 29) because of their long standing and
unresolved political tension. Thus, the political border is the most important as it
explains why the physical borders were crossed. This is contrasted in Sir Orfeo
where the geographical border results in a newly formed political border. The
physical border between the FaГ«rie Kingdom and the Kingdom of Orfeo is
discovered as being Under a fair ympe tree , where the Queen was abducted and
taken to the FaГ«rie Kingdom. The discovery of this location allows Orfeo to attempt
to prevent the second and final abduction of his wife. Orfeo attempts this by

Learning Outcomes of Virtual Labs compared to Hands On Labs With many
schools experiencing budget issues or simply don t have the room nor the ability
to justify the extra expense of a science lab, many schools are looking online for
virtual resources. The need to increase science literacy is almost a mandate from
our dear president. This is a good thing, but the problem is people don t want to
spend money. NGSS demands more cognitive understanding of all sciences and
engineering practices. Schools are looking to increase the level of science
achievement of their students. Students generally found lab experiences valuable,
and viewed lab experiences as beneficial to their learning. (Pyatt, 2012, p. 145)

high school, and basic college courses for the purpose of exploring the usefulness of
virtual labs in biology, chemistry and physics classrooms. Since virtual labs are still
a newer research topic within the last decade, there was no time frame limitations

11. Example Of The Hegelian Dialectic
1 Hegelian Dialectic: a step by step guide to controlling an outcome.
A dialectical (Divided) method of argument by 19th Century German philosopher,
G.W.F. Hegel. It is a method Comprised of Thesis, antithesis, and synthesis.
The Hegelian Dialectic. A process where the contradiction between the Thesisand
Antithesis resolves to a higher level of truth, the synthesis. Also knows as the
Problem, Reaction, Solution.
Its getting to the truth by exchange of logical arguments. When manipulating this
method a person or group of people are swayed to chose a desired outcome.
Understanding is the first step to controlling. This formulaic trick moves groups of
people. It is how we get many major changes in our society.
One guy lights his shoe on fire; now everyone removes their shoes at the airport.
One guy lights his underwear on fire; most everyone gets body scanned. (Opting out

Presenting the extreme cases govern the majority. It is why the defense against a

12. Acetylated Nucleosomes
In bacteria and in eukaryotes, the continuing presence of the activator is required to
keep the gene on. Scientists argue that active genes often associated with acetylated
nucleosomes not because of epigenetic reasons but because of other reasons. One
reason is that as genes are transcribed, their nucleosomes are removed and then
replaced to make way for RNApolymerase which is involved in transcription. They
argue that this nucleosome replacement machinery works to replace one set of
nucleosomes with others that are more highly acetylated. Therefore, nucleosome
acetylation accompanies but does not cause transcription. (Ptashne, 2013)
Those who argue for the importance of epigenetics in cell differentiation argue that
individual Caenorhabditis elegans (worms) exposed to a virus can produce offspring
over several generations that are resistant to the virus. They believe this is due to
histones and their modifications which transmit a vaccine like effect. However those
who oppose believe that this is because of small, protective RNAs that are transmitted
from one generation to the next in the sperm. Then these bind to specific DNA
sequences called cis regulatory sequences associated with specific genes and actvate
or repress transcription. This is said to be done in ... Show more content on

For example, immunity to a virus evoked in a nematode by infection with a virus can
be transmitted to subsequent generations. The mechanism of this is transmission of
small bits of RNA carried in the sperm. In worms these RNA molecules are
automatically amplified by an enzyme , and are readily passed along as the worms
mate . RNA molecules share with specific DNA binding proteins a critical aspect
lacking from histone modifying enzymes: They bear specificities in their base
sequences, and so whatever effect they have can be directed to specific targets. In
other words, RNA molecules, like regulatory proteins, can act specifically (Ptashne,

The Raped Girl s Father
Bones, she was diced bones rolled on black. The Raped Girl s Father is a
disturbing poem about a girl who is unluckily raped, and how this brings incredible
anger and shame to her father. Written by Bruce Dawe, it contains an inept use of
thought, feeling and language. It is an absorbing evocation of the girl s feelings and
her horrendous suffering, and how her identity has changed as a consequence of the
rape for herself, her father and society.
In the first two lines, an aural image is employed to indicate a never ending anger in
the girl s father. Dawe uses onomatopoeia to create a disturbing and upsetting
description of his enraged buzz saw whine. An annoying, upsetting sound, it gives the

The malevolent personification of darkness creates the sense that it symbolising her
father, and perhaps the rapist wants to hurt, cause fear and distress, and is a genuine
danger to her.
So the girl lies in that darker dark , where there is simply no hope or relief of the
grief that she is feeling. What is this darker dark ? This concept causes the reader
to assume she has given up and is powerless; that this dark is completely evil, and
damaging her. A victim, she lies in what she believes will not cease. For every
second of her father s brutal anger she feels his jaws rasp on the naked bone. Another
auditory image, this is an incredibly harsh sound that evokes disturbing violence, a
vicious sense of him biting and cutting into her. Furthermore, the girl feels pain to
his anger, right to her naked bone or her core. She is raw and exposed, and a
disturbing impression of death, violation and cruelty is conveyed. Because of the
rape and the consequence of her father s anger, she has lost all innocence and is
utterly vulnerable.
In a crescendo of pain, devastation and hysteria, the girl mentions her terror in
reliving the rape when going through the justice system. Juxtaposed with the jaws

In the novel, Passing Time, Ehrhart experiences change. For instance, Ehrhart begins
to realize that the war was a huge mistake on the government s behalf. Ehrhart
believed that the government shouldn t have taken part in the Vietnamese war due to
the innocent deaths that developed over the years. Many of the soldiers, including
Ehrhart, were traumatized by the killings during the war. Ehrhart often questions the
events that take place during the war. For example, when Ehrhart witnessed innocent
civilians being killed from both Korea and America. In war, Ehrhart, was taking part
in some of the killings because of a kill first and ask questions later mentality.

The police treated the protest as if it was a riot. The police didn t give a reasonable
warning, but insisted on beating civilians to death because the police didn t agree
with the anti war members protest. For instance, Ehrhart describes that one woman
was being beaten to death by a police officer and Ehrhart tackled the police officer
to the ground (Ehrhart 166). A man had to help Ehrhart drag the woman to safety
after the woman was saved from being beaten to death. Another event that showed
the effects of the anti war movement well after Ehrhart returned from the war was
when Ehrhart was at another anti war protest. Ehrhart was explaining to the public
why he decided to go against the war. Ehrhart explained that he couldn t support
something so pointless (Ehrhart 177). Ehrhart believed the government had made
the people believe that they were trying to stop the vast spread of communism.
Ehrhart believed that the government was lying and that President Nixon wanted to
start and win another war (Ehrhart 169). Ehrhart often expressed his anti war
movement views to his crew mate, Roger. When talking to Roger, Ehrhart explains
his theory on why he feels lied to by the government. Ehrhart explained to Roger
that Vietnam is nothing but a way for the United States to express their dominance
and control. For example Ehrhart says, what we want is freedom to do business on
our own terms and as much of the damned pie we can grab (Ehrhart 181).
15. Rapid Population Growth In The Market Revolution
Would the United States have insinuated its Market Revolution to have happened as
quickly as it did if it weren t for certain major factors which formed during 1790
1860? These major determining factors consisted of rapid population growth,
urbanization, transportation and commerce along with growth in the industry and
economy. The Industrial Revolutiontook off with great speed as a result of Westward
expansion, and rapid large scale development. The American economy grew
during this first part of the Industrial revolution, but it did not affect all parts of
America in the same way. As more people began to move West for better prospects,
New York City s population was still booming which caused the quality of life in
places like these to vary upon circumstance. In the beginning of the Industrial
Revolution; which is referred to as the Market Revolution, the U.S. had begun to
transform its economy. Rather than relying on rural farmers and local goods to
regulate economic policy, they were now utilizing a national market economy. The
need for a more industrialized society grew as the population continued to increase.
When looking at the causes for the population increase we see that One reason for
the growth was improvements in public health; the number and ferocity of epidemics
slowly declined, as did the mortality rate as a whole (Adams 103). Different
demographics; including immigrants, experienced variance in their overall growth as
a race in this new society, and
16. Women s Roles In The Awakening
One of the main restrictions of women in the late 1800 to early 1900 was their
limited roles in society. A women s only roles were in the private and domestic
sphere. They were daughters, then wives, then mothers. In Chopin s The Awakening,
the main protagonist Edna Pontellier is very reluctant to commit to these societal
roles. Mr Pontellier notes his wifes lack of care for their children. He reproached his
wife with her inattention, her habitual neglect of the children. If it was not a mother
s place to look after children, whose on earth was it? (Chopin, 1899, p. 7) The views
of Mr Pontellier represent those of the society. The state of Louisianan was one of the
more conservative states in the United States. During the time the novelwas written,
women were deemed to be property of their husbands. In the novel, Mr Pontellier
looks as his wife as one looks at a valuable piece of personal property which has
suffered some damage. (p. 4) This was due to the Louisianan code which was
developed form the Napoleonic code. Before Louisiana was purchased by the
United States in 1803, it was a colony occupied by the French and Spanish. After it
became a state it continued to follow a legal system that followed the French and
Spanish civil law tradition. The effect of the law was that, after they had married,
women and their property became under the control of their new husband. Not only
were women restricted by society, but they were also restricted by law. If a woman

During the last decades the world has seen an unprecedented considerable growth in
information and communication technology, in fact thanks to internet, most of the
countries in the world are linked together via satellite and servers networks, and it
keeps growing at an exponential rate. This revolutionary change has impacted the
behavior of people in doing business and which had risen e commerce.
According to Laudon and Traver e commerce is the use of internet, the web and
different application to conduct digitally enabled transaction between businesses and
individuals. In e commerce it s mandatory that these transaction involve an exchange
of value across the part in concern in return for a service or a good. E commerce
have significantly transformed commerce, in deed beforehand, commerce involved
that sale and purchase of good and service using traditional marketing tools,
marketers were influencing consumer behavior via advertising. Consumers were
unable to have an accurate and symmetric information about the price, the quality, the
cost of the product that they were buying, as a result, seller s were taking advantage
of information asymmetry to raise their profit. Whereas, e commerce has brought up
a significant reduction in information asymmetry between market forces and allowed
markets to get closer to perfect market competition. However, e commerce allows
sellers to collect more precise information about consumer behavior and preferences
which has given them the
18. Historical Influences On Catch-22 By Joseph Heller
Throughout my readings and research, I have been able to discover more about
how literature and history intertwine and influence each other. Joseph Heller, author
of Catch 22, uses his novel to teach others about the atrocities of war and their
influences on society. Through his own life experiences and his theme of imbalance
of power, Heller is able to encourage readers, like myself, to think a certain way about
wars and discover more about his novel. Historical events influenced Joseph Hellerin
many ways when writing Catch 22. Similar to Yossarian, Joseph Heller was a
bombardier in World War II. Although Joseph Heller enjoyed his experience in
World War II, he did not feel the same about the Cold War. He believed that the

19. The Benefits Of Vegetarianism
It is a Saturday evening, and your family is eating out at a restaurant. When you
look at the menu, all of the main dishes have some type of meat in them. On the
front of the menu, there is a picture of a cow, but all you can think about is how
depressing it is that you are about to eat that cute little cow. I have been in this
situation many times in my life. In the year 1866, vegetarianismwas introduced as a
lifestyle for people. According to Harvard Health, People become vegetarians for
many reasons, including health, religious convictions, concerns about animal welfare
(Becoming). Many religious groups, such as Catholics, would have certain days they
could not eat meat. One such example would be Lent. During Lent, catholics give
up meat in order to honor Jesus. This is still a common tradition that occurs today.
This During a recent study in 2009, As many as 8 million American adults [were]

through reading books and researching the subject through websites and journal

lifestyle, reduces the risk of heart disease, and can be a significant benefit towards a
person s life.
Vegetarianism is important because it is the best way to develop a healthy lifestyle.
One such example is the statement that plant based eating is recognized as not only

The essay will conclude by revealing through the use of evidence which was the
dominant factor in the speech in gaining support
Economic Pressure was used in the speech regularly to show the large division
between the rich and the poor. The speaker refers to the rich unnaturally elevated ,
weight of taxation, misrule and oppression . Destitution in horrid form stalks
through street, lane and thourghfare emaciated frames . The terminology reflects
on the economic pressures that the poor endured, high tax and poor working
conditions that often led to illness and death. He emphasised how the richer of the
society, the aristocracy, were in exclusive possession of power . This speech
would have stirred the emotions of the crowds as they heard how hard their lives
were to those belonging to the upper classes. The speaker creates horrid, desperate
images of the poorer classes insufferable despair, toll of the death bell to highlight
how hard their lives were. (Briggs, 1959, P.50) a secondary source reflected how
Chartism seems to have been strongest in the two kinds of places... centres of
decaying or contracting industry and new or expanding single industry towns .
Briggs s writing shows that Chartism was prominent in only certain areas such as
those of industry. Whereas, almost non existent in completely agricultural villages .
21. Walden Tone
Walden Tone The tone of the excerpt from Walden is critical of the way the
American population lives. This is seen by Thoreau s comparisons of the
American lifestyle to people or beings that do not live logically, such as the greedy
man who was turned into an ant by Zeus in one of Aesop s fables, or the pygmies
and the cranes that fought a war until the pygmy population was decimated. He
states in the excerpt that he wanted to . . . live so sturdily and Spartan like as to put
to rout all that is not life, (Thoreau, 2). This quotation emphasizes that the American
people are not able to truly live life since they tend to live in extravagant excess.

Thoreau criticizes his fellow humans when he states that they have somewhat
hastily concluded that it is the chief end of man here to glorify God and enjoy him
forever, (Thoreau, 2). The indicated quotation shows that Thoreau believes that his
fellow citizens have not actually taken the time to look at all the facts of life in
order to make an educated decision about what life is for. Thoreau intends to tell
the world what life is about since he believes that many humans are in a strange
uncertainty about it, whether it is of the devil or of God, (Thoreau, 2). If people
are uncertain about who created life, Thoreau suggests that they take away all the
superficial aspects of it and examine its bare bones. However, many people wish to
live extravagantly and do not know who or what created life, nor do they wish to
give up their material possessions to find out. In the event that people did discern
what life was and who created it, Thoreau would not have to be critical of them as
they would live the way he did and they would not have anything that was not
necessary for their survival, which would itself make them happy. Thus, if humankind
cared more about the basics of life rather than its extravagance, Thoreau might not
have felt the need to disapprove of
22. The Battle of Yorktown
The Battle of Yorktown or better known as the Siege of Yorktown was the final
battle in the American Revolution. The battle took place in Yorktown, Virginia in
1781. The battle lasted from September 28th 1781 and October 19th 1781. The
American and French forces were lead by George Washington, Comte de
Rochambeau, and Comte de Grasse. The conflict was caused due to many events
like the Boston Massacre and The Boston Tea Party but was reinforced by how the
British were treating the people of America and raising their taxes. The men look
to their leaders for guidance and motivation. The people of America looked up to
George Washington because of his military knowledge and his keen and sneaky
tactics. General George Washington learned that Lieutenant General Lord Charles
Cornwallis army was encamped near Yorktown, VA. After discussing options with
his French ally, Lieutenant General Jean Baptiste Ponton de Rochambeau,
Washington decided to quietly move his army away from New York City with the
goal of capturing and making a blockade around Cornwallis force. General

surrounding area until either death or surrender by the British. This battle was a
success in the American point of view. They were able to capture and siege
Yorktown with minimal losses. In total only 88 allies were killed which was

when he groaned the initial verse of his 1964 album s title track, The Times they
are A Changing (1964). A masterpiece which would continue to ring in the ears of
every new generation of upcoming adults for nearly half a century. Dylan depicts
two conflicting mindsets in his anthem of progress: Those who resist change,
otherwise known as, the first who will later be last; and those who rally for change,
the slow that ll later be fast. Respectively, lionized author and classical Ivy League
educator Timothy D. Snyder s, Why Laptops in Class Are Distracting America s

During World War II, Nazi Germany killed around 20,946,000 men, women, and
children from multiple countries and backgrounds (R.J. Rummel). This war was just
as horrid and unthinkable as any other. Millions of people suffered, towns were
destroyed, and society lived in an all consuming fear. Germany was successful with
most of their plans of destruction, and part of that came from their unsolvable Enigma
code. Alan Turing, a brilliant mathematician, worked with other intellectuals to figure
out how to crack it. They were triumphant. Although the end of WWII can be
attributed to many things, Alan Turing s solving of the Enigma code was what
allowed the Allies to have the ultimate advantage because they could understand

With German invasion imminent in 1939, the Poles opted to share their secrets
with the British, and Britain s Government Code and Cipher School (also known
as GC CS) Bletchley Park, Buckinghamshire, became the centre for Allied efforts to
keep up with dramatic war induced changes in Enigma output. (Andrew Lycett,

would have the upper hand. The Germans were so confident in the Enigma code
that they used it to encrypt most all of their messages during the war. Since it was
a difficult and sensitive task, Bletchley Park needed Britain s best minds to work
together. He (Alan Turing) was already working part time for the British
Government s Code and Cypher School before the Second World War broke out. In
1939, Turing took up a full time role at Bletchley Park in Buckinghamshire (Imperial
War Museums). Alan Turing was a very intelligent mathematician and at this point,
he was proving this to many others. His genius was exactly what this problem
needed. After Britain declared war on Germany, they immediately sent people to
work on cracking the Enigma. It was believed to be an impossible task, and yet they

Abstract
Corporate social responsibility is a crucial factor for corporations to build
sustainability of their business process that will help to create shared values for
companies and society. Iraq is one of the most countries in the world that needs this
kind of sustainability to build and reform the infrastructure economically and socially.
But, unfortunately, the facts on the ground are quite the opposite, and these
corporations got affected by the corruption that has been eroding the country for
years. In this study I will try to spot the light on how these companies have been
profiting in Iraq and escaping their social responsibilities, also how can the
stakeholders influence the financial performance of these enterprises. I will explain
about (Zain Iraq) and how it is doing a good job comparing it to other big
corporations in the country. Will suggest five ways in which the primary stakeholders
can influence the financial performance of the company.
This report will also explain about one of the main controversial social concern
associated with this company.

28. The Dangers Of Greed In Lucky You By Carl Hiaasen
What would you do for fourteen million dollars? In Carl Hiaasen s novel Lucky
You, JoLayne Lucks, an African American veterinarian, and two friends Bode
Gazzer and Chubb each win a lottery ticket. Bode and Chubb soon realize they have
to split the twenty eight million dollar jackpot with JoLayne, and become angry
because they want all the money. Tom Krome, a journalist for the local newspaper,
is on a mission to help JoLayne make sure that doesn t happen. Greed is defined as
the desire, most of the time selfish, for prosperity, power, or status. Most of the
time, greed is created when insecurities and troubles in a person s life lead them to
believe they can improve their life through selfish means. It often causes people to
transform in a negative manner. When a person is insecure about their position in
society, they often turn to greed as an attempt to solve their problems. Chubb and
Bode are scared of anyone who isn t a similar background to them taking control of
the society they live in. Because of this, they are led to believe it is their job to
create a group to stop it. Part of this involves stealing the lottery ticket from
JoLayne, who is an African American (Hiaasen 47). When they realize an African
American woman who won the other ticket, they believe it will be easy for them
to get it. This reveals that Chibb and Bode are insecure about an African American
woman winning the same amount of money as they did, which is why they
decided to steal it. Their insecurities about being lower in society is what fuels the
greed for the money. Additionally, Chubb is insecure about not having a woman
who loves him, so he kidnaps Amber, a Hooters waitress. He feels that every man
has a woman, so he feels he deserves to be with her. After seeing Chubb, Bode, and
Shiner with Amber, Tom exclaims, Look at those googans and tell me they know
how to cope with a girl like that (206). Tom is pointing out a key part of all three of
the men s personalities. Their desire for a woman in their life was so great that they
needed to kidnap her and she is thus able to manipulate them. Their greed to fit in
with the norms of society is too much for them to understand what is happening.
Because Chubb and Bode are insecure about

Grittiness play a key aspect in the story of Million Dollar Baby. It takes a person with
authentic strength and the mindset to overcome and achieve some of the obstacles
that are presented throughout this storyline. Maggie Fitzgerald and Frankie Dunn are
the two main characters that make this movie intense and engaging. Although both
characters are very gritty and have similarities, only one holds the title to be the
grittiest. Maggie Fitzgerald is gritter than Frankie Dunn because she exemplifies the
characteristics of fortitude, toughness, tenacity, and determination more so than
Frankie. From the beginning of this movie, Maggie strongly shows the act of tenacity,
which means the quality or fact of being able to grip something firmly (Dictionary)....

the movie, Frankie became more of parent to Maggie than a mentor and friend.
They both accepted roles and adopted one another as a family. Maggie had a huge
fall out towards the end of the movie. She got severely injured by the Women s
World Boxing Champion, Billie. She was paralyzed from the neck down and was
hospitalized for several months. She went to a rehab facility where she thought
her health and injures would get better, but instead got worse. When Maggie s
family found out she was in the hospital, they immediately came to visit her. Her
mother, Earline Fitzgerald was trying to act like she has been there for her through
everything, but she really has not. Maggie felt awkward, annoyed, and frustrated at
the fact that they were there. She told them to leave because they were acting very
selfish and self centered. After they left, Frankie came in the room to calm Maggie
down and be there for her. She started feeling bad and kept making comments such
as, I want to die , This is the end for me , and Frankie had no idea what to do. He felt
torn apart and heartbroken that someone
30. The Causes Of Human Growth And The Endocrine System
In mammals, we find that the body requires certain systems to function properly and
effectively in order to grow. The endocrine system is one of the physiological systems
that primarily regulates growth and plays a vital role in the onset of post natal growth
as well as the onset and cessation of pubertal growth. There are also other contributors
such as nutrition and genetics, etc. that influence these growth patterns. The
endocrine systemis a vital messaging system that relies completely on hormone
delivery to specific cells. The medium of this delivery is the blood in the venous
system which means that the hormones secreted can reach target cells often located
far from the endocrine glands; this is an efficient method as the endocrine system
regulates activities that require duration rather than speed. This efficient system
means that homeostasis can be maintained. As the hormones are distributed in the
blood through the venous system, this results in the whole body being exposed to
these hormones and therefore the fact that only the target cells have specific binding
receptors for the particular hormone means that only those target cells will respond to
the exposure of the hormone. Once the hormone is bound to its specific target cell
receptors, a chain of events within the target cells occurs that brings about the
hormones final effect. (Sherwood, 2016)

31. Nuclear Fusion a Feasible Source of Power Essay example
Is Nuclear Fusion a Feasible Source of Power?
Abstract:
Nuclear fusion may be an effective solution to the energy problem in today?s world.
Fusion is environmentally friendly and has the potential to generate massive amounts
of power. It is evident that the Sun?s power is fueled by nuclear fusion. Recent
advancements such as ITER and NIF may bring us closer to being able to use fusion.
We find that nuclear fusion is a long term solution to a continuing problem.
Introduction:
Since the Industrial Age, energy from fossil fuels has become widespread. In recent
times, the depletion of fossil fuels is forcing humanity to search for other alternatives,
such as nuclear fusion. Fusion has been an attractive method of energy for a ... Show

Scientists aim to gain knowledge and improve the power output, the time duration,
and the energy cost.
Nuclear fusion is a process that occurs when two hydrogen isotopes (tritium and
deuterium) fuse together. This reaction produces a neutron and also a large amount
of energy. However, a massive amount of heat is necessary for the reaction to initiate
because the nuclei (which have very strong opposing charges) must fuse together.
The temperature necessary for this to occur is over one hundred million degrees
Kelvin. When the reaction occurs, the energy is so great that it is very difficult to
contain. So far the known methods of containment are magnetic confinement and
inertial confinement. The magnetic confinement uses a very powerful magnetic field,
and the inertial confinement uses the inertia of the reaction.
(Figure 1, wikipedia, ?nuclear fusion?) We will investigate published literature that
either supports or reflects if fusion is feasible. We believe fusion would be a feasible
source of power if it could produce reasonably more energy that is put in.
Results and Discussion
There are several methods to create nuclear fusion for power. The most successful is
the star, which uses gravity and pressure to fuse hydrogen and create helium.
Unfortunately we cannot harness a sun and harvest it on earth for raw fusion energy.
However, we can create small reactions similar to that of the sun in the lab and turn
the radiant energy

Rule 23.1 governs derivative suits in which a plaintiff seeks to assert a right
belonging to a corporation (or similar entity) in which the plaintiff is a shareholder,
on behalf of the corporation that is not pursuing the claim itself. Rule 23.2 governs
actions by or against unincorporated associations (Rule 23, 2009).
Diversity of citizenship is one of the factors that will allow a federal district court to
exercise its authority to hear a lawsuit. This authority is called diversity jurisdiction. It
means that a case involving questions that must be answered according to state
laws may be heard in federal court if the parties on the two sides of the case are
from different states. No matter how many parties are involved in a lawsuit, there
must be complete diversity in order for the federal court to exercise this type of
authority. If a single plaintiff is a citizen of the same state as any defendant, there is
no diversity and the case must be pursued in a state court (Diversity, n.d.).
Because the defendants were from the same state as the plaintiff, this would not fall
under a diversity of citizenship case. This case was about equal opportunity and
gender discrimination not about diversity in the sense of cultural diversity.

In modern society, the outstanding technology has brought human to a bright new
age that people are more likely to value the materiality. Then more problems are

fear of death is emphasized and given a new definition that fits into this lopsided
modern society, which is overwhelmed by all kinds of information from mass media.
People unconsciously dedicate more onto the stories that media made up for them,

In essay Big and Bad , Gladwell has implied the way the mass media influence
people; a experiment of university of Pennsylvania is presented, Dogs were
restrained by a harness, so that they couldn t move, and then repeatedly subjected
to a series of electrical shocks. Then the same dogs were shocked again, only this
time there could easily escape by jumping over a low hurdle. But most of them didn
t, they just huddle in the corner, no longer believing that there was anything they
could do to influence their own fate. (448) In other word, those dogs are lost hope
and the motivation to think since they give up doing it. There are so many
advertisements on the television today saying that they represent the truth, without
any consideration for the audiences. However, more or less, we are influenced.
What s more, the effect of hindered thinking has brought humans back to primitive
level, where Gladwell says But at the reptilian level they think that if I am bigger
and taller I m safer. (442)

Random error is never avoidable (Wojciechowski, 2006). When using the
sharpened pencil to mark the end of the meter stick each time there was a different
measurement. By measuring the width three times help minimize random error,
however; did not eliminate random error (Wojciechowski, 2006). Table 1 showed
that the Pencil Test had less percent error than Table 2 of the Marker Test. No
matter how precise you think that a number may be, it is never measured perfectly
(Wojciechowski, 2006). Precision is how closely related values are to each other.
For instance, the mean of the three percent error numbers is 40%. The first pencil
percent error was 39% and it falls below the average of the percent error. Table 2
shows the Marker Test. The percent error numbers are higher in this table than in
Table 1. The mean of the three percent error numbers in Table 2 is 79.33%. The
second type of error is systematic error. Systematic error comes into play when
using the warped meter stick with using a broad magic marker instead of a
sharpened pencil; therefore, Table 2 of the Marker Test is what the respiratory
therapist can refer back to about systematic error. The third type of error is
parallax error. Table 3 is an example of parallax error. Parallax error was measured
above eye level, which gave a measurement of 86 millimeters that was the same as
eye level of the graduated cylinder; at eye level measurement was the same as
above eye level of the graduated cylinder; and below eye level was measured by
reading 85 millimeters, a lower number than it actually indicated of the graduated
cylinder. Table 3 showed the flow meter above eye level had a reading of 3.5 liters
per minute, at eye level had a reading of 3 liters per minute, and below eye level had
a reading of 3 liters per minute. The therapist should make attempt to make a
measurement as perpendicular as possible to both the indicator on the meter and the
scale (Wojciechowski,
39. Essay On Man s Search For Meaning
A prominent quote in the bible comes from John 8:13 and states, The truth will set
you free . According to this, knowing the truth will free one from the prison of
falsehood, and yet the truth is often accompanied by some form of suffering.
Knowing the truth will free someone from the lie they are living, but it may not be
a life they wish to be freed from. In difficult situations, people often rely on illusion
and live in denial as a way to survive, due to the truthbeing too difficult to accept. In
order to find meaning in one s life while suffering or experiencing a difficult
situation, meaning is often found in illusions and false hoods, rather than in reality.

Illusion, it seemed, was the best remedy to survive the horrors of the camps.
Frankl used this illusion to ignore the reality of what he was suffering from in
order to find meaning and be able to survive. If one were to fixate on the horrors of
the reality he was living, he would be unable to see a future outside the camp and
therefore a reason to live, ultimately resulting in his demise.
The idea of using illusion to escape the horrors of reality is depicted by Cypher in
The Matrix. Cypher had been awoken by Morpheus and reborn into the real world
outside the Matrix. In the movie Cypher is seen at dinner with Agent Smith, and
describes to the agent that ... I know this steak doesn t exist. I know when I put it in
my mouth; the Matrix is telling my brain that it is juicy, and delicious. After nine
years.. you know what I realize? Ignorance is bliss (Wachowski, The Matrix). This is
Cypher s justification for betraying his friends and helping the agents protect the
Matrix against Morpheus and his allies. Cypher was disgusted by the nature of reality
in comparison to the blissful illusion that the Matrix provided, and he was desperate
to return to that. Because of this, Cypher, during a mission, separated himself from
the others in the Matrix and returned to reality, shooting Tank and then unplugging
Apoc and Switch to kill them. As he attempted to kill neo, Tank regained
consciousness and stopped Cypher
40. European Union ( Eu ) Action
2.2 European Union (EU) action
The EU was developing a particular system to mitigate CO2 and other GHG
emissions. In 2005, the EU establishes an effective system, which is EU Emissions
Trading Scheme (EU ETS) (European Communities, 2013). The EU ETS considers as
effective system to combat climate change and tool to reduce CO2 and other GHG
(European Communities, 2015).
The EU ETS has biggest and first main emissions trading in the world. This system
includes 28 countries from the EU as well Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. This
trading scheme puts price on each ton of carbon emissions. As the CO2 emissions
prices are high, thus encouraging to increase investment with clean energy that
reduce CO2 and GHG emissions. Beside, this system ... Show more content on

The EU ETS cap allowance gives the owner of company to emit one tone of CO2
(each allowance can used only one time). Moreover, cap gives EU companies
chance to buy or receive emissions allowance if they want to trade. In addition,
from 2013, the cap will be making change by reduce emission about 1.74% every
year from power plants and installations. That means GHG emission in 2020 will be
reduce around 21% compared to 2005 (European Communities, 2013).
2.3 local responses
In light to local response for UK to mitigate CO2 emission and other GHG, it has
established Climate Change Act on 26 November 2008. These act aims to several
legislation that helps to manage and address climate change (GOV.UK, 2013 a).
Therefore, the act works to achieve aims as the following: First, make certain
economic way to reduce emissions and reduce about 80% of GHG by 2050 compared
to 1990 (HM Government, 2011 GOV.UK, 2013 a). Second, providing clear plan for
industry to work effective in reduce emission by the act (GOV.UK, 2013 a).
Third, use EU ETS policy to provide large proportion to reducing emissions in the
UK between the 2013 and 2020. Fourth, use 2050 Calculator by public and policy
makers to choosing the appropriate options to reduce emission and achieve the
target of 2050 (GOV.UK, 2014). The 2050 Calculator is model that help policy
makers and public to choose the appropriate way for reducing emissions

James Monroe, born in Westmoreland County, Virginia, to Spence Monroe and
his wife Elizabeth Jones Monroe, was a very prominent man in history. James
Monroe was also a very ambitious man who would, at most times, be a potential

The Color Purple is a 1985 film written by Menno Meyjes and directed by Steven
Spielberg, based upon a novel by Alice Walker. The major actors in the film were:
Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg, Danny Glover, and Margret Avery. Celie, the
main character, is treated harshly by the world, a bashful, afraid girl whose life
mostly involves fleeing from the men who want to beat and rape her. Celie s
eventual flourishing delivers a joyful experience, one of the greatest ones I ve gotten
from a movie. The scene where Shug teases Celie into smiling was a turning point of
the film, and it s the moment we realize humanity is gleaming out of the screen upon
us. In The Color Purple, it appears Celie has a life of filled with misery. By the age of

Spielberg uses the musical element of melody in the opening scene. We hear Celie
and Nettie singing a tune together, clapping their hands, and dancing around in a
field of purple flowers. Another musical element used is rhythm. Rhythm is found
in the scene where Albert is kicking Nettie off his land. The notes are long for a
more dramatic sound. Spielberg uses the musical element of texture in the scene
where Celie discovers the letters from Nettie and the audience hears all the
different sounds of Africa going on at once. The sounds of the African people
humming, chopping, and drums all create a pleasant background to Nettie s voice.
Another musical element used is timbre. Timbre is found in the scene when Celie
is learning to read after Nettie left. The quality of the sound here is rich and
empowering. Spielberg uses the musical element of dynamics in the reunion of
Celie and Nettie at the end. The music starts out soft but slowly gets louder as the
two finally meet. One aspect of the musical texture used is density. Density is found
in the background music to Harpo bringing Sophia to meet Albert. The music is
thick and building up to Albert and Sophie s unsmooth meeting. Spielberg used the
aspect of musical texture called range. At Sophia and Harpo s wedding, the organ is
played making music from a low pitch to a high pitch creating the background music
to the wedding scene. The
44. Elizabethan Espionage And Its Impact On The Growth
And...
During a time in England when there was much religious conflict, there was also a
need to protect the queen due to her religious beliefs. The protectors who
safeguarded Queen Elizabeth I from danger were commonly thought to be her
brave knights or constables. However, there was actually a clandestine group of
individuals who were charged with a similar duty. Unlike England s military
intelligence forces today, a disorganized spy group engaged in espionage for the
defense of Renaissance England s important affairs and for Queen Elizabeth herself.
Because of this spy ring s successes, Elizabethan espionage had a dramatic impact on
the growth and evolution of England as a nation.

Another well known leader in Elizabeth s network was Sir Francis Walsingham.
Before the throne of Elizabeth I began in 1558, a noble English man, Sir Francis
Walsingham, was not in favor of Queen MaryI s authority (MackovГЎ). Instead of
abiding to the Mary I s leadership, Francis traveled outside of England until the
accession of Elizabeth I. When Sir Walsingham returned to a new ruler in England, he
brought with him stronger relations with foreign contacts and knowledge that prove
to be significant for a position he attained as Secretary of State. Eventually, Sir
Walsingham would further strengthen England s spy group to surveillance the depths
within England and abroad for secrets that would prevent harm to England (Watts).
In addition to Elizabeth s closest advisers, Robert Dudley was among one of the
three leaders who had firm control in Elizabeth I s spy network. Dudley was a
member of the queen s privy council and was an appointee of Master of Horses, a
position that involved organizing public attendances, progresses, and entertainment
for the queen (Somerset, pp. 111). Dudley was Elizabeth I s most favorite out of all
her advisers. Both Elizabeth I and Dudley had romantic desires for each other,
unfortunately nothing between them would escalate since not too many people were
pleased about their relationship (Somerset, pp. 100 03)

Jared Hopkins Ms. Best Advanced Language Arts 7 24 April 2017 Abolishing the
Penny: It s Time When s the last time you used a penny? Most people rarely use
them, but the US mint makes nearly 7.5 billions pennies each and every year, but
for what? Some say pennies have been around too long and you can t just get rid of
them, however when you take into account that the penny costs more than it s face
value then you might change your mind. It s time for pennies to go, on average all
the pennies we make cost the US almost $900 million per year. Now this cost isn t
even including the time, fuel, expenses, and the hassle of shipping all these pennies
to the banks, just for everybody to throw them in a penny jar. Research shows that...

If we just get rid of the penny, the mint would only have to do half the work! And
we re not even counting all the time, fuel, expense, and hassle of carting all those
pennies around to the banks, merchants, etc. If we stop making pennies in the first
place, we save all this associated time and trouble, too (Headley). If we just got rid
of the penny we wouldn t have to pay the price for making therm, and for getting
them everywhere, which could cost nearly as much as making all the pennies. On
the flip side, some might say that if we got rid of the penny then we would have to
round everything to the nickel, because of this we would have to make more
nickels, which are even less economically efficient then the penny. What these
people don t realize is that most goods, and services will round up to the nearest
dollar, so we won t have to make nearly as many nickels as we would pennies. In
conclusion the penny should be abolished because, we end up 1.924 billion dollars
more in debt. The penny isn t worth it and has to go, it costs more to make then it
is worth, so we are losing money, besides losing money we also lose time, the time
to make the pennies and, to ship them everywhere. Still people will be mad that they
are gone, but they won t be gone they ll still be around, we just won t be producing
them anymore. Finally when you weigh
46. The Tragical History Of Romeo And Juliet
In Shakespeare s rendition of the poem, The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet
by Arthur Brooke, there lies an epic story filled with tragedy and romance. This
play introduces two characters who fall in love at first sight and even decide to be
married the next day. By today s standards, this may be seen as completely absurd and
impractical. The couple even commits suicide in an attempt to reunite with each
other. Even with the sacrifice made, there is no guarantee that their affection would
last if they had not been victims of circumstance. The supposed lovethat Romeo and
Juliet share is not real because they had a very brief amount of time to get to know
each other well, they are young and do not have enough experience in life, and their...

As it turns out, Romeo and Juliet also fall into that category. In the words of Lord
Capulet, But saying o er what I have said before. My child is yet a stranger in the
world. She hath not seen the change of fourteen years. (1.2.7 9) The reader can
deduct from this that Juliet is just thirteen years old. As it stands, Romeo s age is
not directly stated in the play, and it is arguable that he could be a variety of ages.
Nonetheless, he is young as well, relatively close in age to Juliet. Being that these
two are so young, they have not had as much experience as an adult has. Extreme
hardships, working to earn their keep, and sustaining their own household are things
that these two have not seen the likes of. Certainly, these experiences have a great
potential to change them and their actions. Their judgements and views on life may
be altered as a result of these. Lord Capulet even states that Juliet is a stranger in the
world , implying that she does not know much about how things work. In conclusion,
Romeo and Juliet are so young that their experiences are not significant enough for
them to decide that they should be married just
47. My Mother Was A Military Brat
My grandmother once said, or at least I am told she once said, that she was
concerned that my father should not marry my mother because she had no roots.
My mother was a military brat. The longest she s ever lived anywhere is seven
years. She makes no bones about the fact that she doesn t know where she s from.
Like the planes my grandfather worked on, my mother was a child of the wind,
going here and there, and wherever destiny took her. I suppose my grandmother
would say the same thing about me. I am a missionary s child, taken wherever the
call of God took my family. I didn t grow up in just one place, therefore I have no
roots. It s a very Southern concept, having roots, and is as sacred to the Heart of
Dixie as sweet tea and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But even if that misfortune should befall them, they are still in the same spot they
were planted in.
I am like a bird. My roots are confined to one area. My egg hatched in Auburn, and
since then I have collected roots Auburn, Roanoke, Quito,Temuco, Santiago,
Cullman, Florence, and Killen, and have woven them all into a nest that is
currently nestled in the branches of Killen. My roost don t trap me in one spot. I
am free to fly wherever without hesitation, and if I so desire, bring back some leaves,
or branches, or even more roots from the places I visit.
At some point I m sure a storm of life, or an unexpected gust of wind will blow me
out of Killen s tree. So I ll glide where the wind takes me, and rebuild my nest in a
new tree with new roots.
I m sure my grandmother thinks her little bird is an unstable wreck, and in some
ways I am. My ADHD and scattered brains have turned me into quite the character.
The payoff is worth it though. Why watch the seasons slip by the same old burrow
when you can soar to the heavens and gaze upon the whole world?
I ll always have my nest to come back to, and with each blustery, windy trip to a new
tree, my nest of roots grows bigger and grander.
