The fashion silhouette at the turn of the 20th century became slimmer and more feminine, influenced by King Edward VII's rumored tastes for mature, elegant styles. Women's fashion of this era was characterized by tighter sleeves and shoulders, an accentuated small waist, a large bosom and curvy hips. Skirts were long and flowy. Edward VII, who began his reign at age 60, was thought to prefer more mature tastes in women, and enjoyed dressing elegantly for leisure activities like garden parties. The Art Nouveau movement also influenced fashion with its emphasis on natural, curvy lines over rigid geometrics.
