practical

looked more like a uniform
as the 2nd world war began
to ration material.
- Cuffs on pants and extra
pockets were taken away.

or materials in WWII.

Sheer stockings were very
popular, but all the silk and nylon
were being used for parachutes
so women would draw ‘seems’ up
their legs with an eyebrow pencil
to give the illusion of silk
stockings.

16. Time period: 1950s
- The style in the 50’s was
very preppy with wide short
skirts and ‘young’ style.
- Described as innocent
- Men wore baggy suits with
narrow ties.
17. Time period: 1950s
- Fashion was heavily
influenced by parents trying
to keep their children young
and innocent and by the use
of new and old materials
available again like nylon
and acrylic.
Rockabilly music also had a
large influence as well as
stars like Elvis Presley and
Marilyn Monroe.

- The style in the 60’s became
increasingly more casual in
all age groups.
- Women’s wear followed 2
main trends: the continued
preppy style of the 50’s and
the new hippie style of the
60’s.

frivolous patterns were
back in.

- Fashion was heavily
influenced by art styles,
most especially space age
styles consisting of blocky
and bold shapes
- - The feminist movement
inspired girls to wear mini
skirts, defying the model of
femininity in the 50’s .

- Bell bottom and flare jeans,
Tie dye, mini skirts and
maxi dresses became very
popular in the 70’s
- Men wore platform shoes,
wide legged pants, collared
shirts, and vests.
- Simple styles were made
bold with bright colours.

- The hippie style of the late
60’s was continued into the
70’s which added an
emphasis on handmade
clothing and accessories.

became popular in the 80’s.

25. Time period: 1990s
- Fashion in the 90’s changed
drastically from the crazy
style of the 80’s. Fashion
reverted to a toned down
and minimalist look.

were 2 big designers in the
90’s.

- Women’s looks included mesh or
handkerchief tops, box-pleated
or leather skirts, shiny pants, and

Y2K style was very popular in the
2000s. Y2k involves bright colours and
kitschy aesthetics to make a
maximalist look.

- 2010’s consisted of galaxy
tights, wedge sneakers,
high-low skirts, chevron
prints, gladiator sandals,
cracked nail polish and
flower crowns. Not our best

more popularity in the 20’s.
- Styles from the 60s and 70s
are making an appearance.
- Minimalist fashion is
common.
- Extremely relaxed
