The tundra has an unusually cold and dry climate with little precipitation averaging 6-10 inches per year, similar to deserts. Coupled with strong winds, it has extreme weather. Though precipitation is low, the tundra appears wet and soggy due to slow evaporation and poor drainage from permafrost. Common animals include the arctic fox, caribou, ermine, grizzly bear, harlequin duck, and musk ox.
