- Bringing together “engineering”, “science”, and “design” (maken, wetenschap en ontwerpen); but also human interaction, user interface, sociology, psychology, etc. Benadering uit de verschillende gebieden moeten kunnen worden gecombineerd door studenten. Voorbeeld zit in het filmpje (WERKT NIET???). There are 4 different capcacity groups within the department: Designed Intelligence User Centered Engineering Designing Quality in Interaction Business Process Design Education and research are always integrated through commonly defined “themes” that form the focus of the educational and research programme.
- Integration of education and research, and interaction between capacitygroups through “themes”: Health care: physical and mental well being Playful interactions: Open ended play, game design, social interaction Realities: exploring and crossing the boundaries between digital and real world Light, space, time, move: designing new interactions with the human movement as guiding principle Virtues & values: virtues, values and future of human beings, and how products play a role in this (sustainability, designing out crime) Wearable senses: intelligent systems, electronics and sensing devices on the human body Social robots & humanoids: autonomous behaviour of intelligent systems and products Experiences & emotions: experience design; how can a design evoke specific emotions at people AutoMobility: mobility, automobilies, airplanes Discovering & learning: coupling of learning theories to motivation, and using this in physical designs The research interests vary from multi-media applications for interactive exhibition spaces to playgrounds for children, from stress reduction during long flights to aids in the treatment of autistic children, from integrated sensors in sports garments to interactive photo albums, From sustainability to gaming, and everything in between. Next slides give some examples of Industrial Design projects and their results.

- Electrical Power Systems (Prof. Wil Kling) Een drietal onderwerpen: -pulsed power: plasma processen voor sustainable energy generation (biofluels), combustion enhancement (automotive) en sustainable chemical processing -electromagnetische compatibiliteit -intelligente netten: in de toekomst zal je meer met kleine powercentrales gaan werken en hoe stuur je die aan (reactive power); ook powerquality omdat er steeds meer hoger harmonische in de netten worden gebracht waardoor het net vervuilt Electromechanics and power electronics (EPE) Electromechanics (Prof Elena Lemonova) Vliegend tapijt. Draadloze actuatoren (draadloze data en energie). ASML denkt eraan bij zijn EUV waferverplaatsingen in vacuum. Ook lichtgewicht positioneren met Steinbuch. Contactloos geleidingssysteem maakt alles kleiner. Electrical Power Electronics (Prof Elena Lemonova) Hoe moet je stromen uit brandstof- en zonnecellen effectief converteren naar bruikbare stromen d.m.v. converters t.b.v. decentrale energievoorziening. Idem voor b.v. Xe lampen (voor Philips Lighting). Algemeen ook wat dat betekent voor elektronische aansturing (powerelektronica). Electronic Systems (Prof Ralph Otten) Gaat over elektronische design van een digitale chip. Wat zijn de ontwerpregels. Hoe kun je 1.000.000 transistoren op een chip zetten. Applicaties mappen op platformen. Processorarchitecturen ontwikkelen. Mixed Signal Microelectronics (Prof Arthur van Roermund) Ontwerpt analoge chips en laat deze maken (mbv partners). Conversie van analoog naar digitaal en andersom alsmede RF circuits op hoge frequenties en met een laag stroomverbruik zijn thema’s. Denk aan chip waarmee je TV kunt ontvangen op je mobiel. Control Systems (Prof Paul van den Bosch) Hybride control (= van analoge en digitale) van signalen. Maar ook identificatie van niet-liniaire systemen. Applicaties naar b.v. medisch maar ook electronische functies in een auto, control van het ‘vliegende tapijt’ t.b.v. ASML, regelen stabiele energievoorziening vanuit een gedecentraliseerde energie voorziening, etc. Signal Processing Systems (Prof Jan Bergmans) Denk aan applicaties voor multimedia (audio en video), medische toepassingen (neonatale en neurometry onderzoek), communicatie (basis algoritmen voor telecommunicatie en informatietheorie). Electro optical communication (Prof. Ton Koonen) Glasvezel kabel communicatie. Dit is het gebied van topinstituut Photonics (en bijbehorende school Cobra). Hoe moduleer je door de glasvezel heen. Siemens heeft blijkbaar interesse. Ook de bijbehorende netwerkarchitectuur. In toekomst ook goedkope polymere vezels waarmee tot aan je huis kunt. Opto electric devices (Prof. Meint Smit) Optische transistoren en optische chips. Blijkbaar ook voor ASML interessant. Quantum dots. Wireless and electromagnetism (WEM) Electromagnetism (Prof Anton Tijhuis) Rekenen aan antennes. Richten ervan. Ook medische applicaties: hoe vang ik die elektrische velden op. Staat op zeer hoog nivo. Radio communication systems (Prof Erik Fledderus Radiocommunicatie. Denk aan GSM propagatie door gebouwen en demping en MIMO (weerkaatsing via wanden maakt signalen sterker dan zonder obstructie).
