A tsunami is a series of water waves caused by the displacement of a large volume of water in an ocean. Tsunamis form when an earthquake vertically displaces the seabed by several meters, moving hundreds of cubic kilometers of water. As large waves move through the deep ocean away from the earthquake's epicenter, they travel at great speeds but slow down and increase in height when reaching shallow coastal waters.
