A massive 9.0 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia in December 2004. This earthquake displaced a large volume of water in the Indian Ocean and generated a deadly tsunami. The tsunami waves traveled at high speeds across the Indian Ocean and impacted coastlines in Indonesia, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, and other countries over several hours, resulting in over 100,000 deaths and extensive property damage. Tsunamis are series of waves generated by earthquakes or other seismic events that displace large volumes of water and can cause widespread destruction far from their origin.
