Delivering the first keynote address, Shri. Raghunan-
dan Jagdish, the CEO of Nandan Ground Support
Equipment, shared his entrepreneurial journey as a
mechanical engineer in leading the company to capture
95% of the market. He emphasized that there is no sub­
stitute to constant innovation. W ith the promotion and
governmental support now available through the "Make
in India" initiative, time is ripe to create domestic prod­
ucts that can beat imported engineering designs in qual­
ity and pricing. He urged faculty and students to get into
the habit of rapidly prototyping their innovations and learning from experimental failures. Nandan GSE
will shortly enter into an MoLI with Trinity for R&D support for their engineering designs.
Dr. Hirofumi Tanaka, leading expert from the Human
Intelligence Systems lab of Kyushu Institute, Japan, pre­
sented the wide range of research his team is involved
in. He discussed the challenges being faced in designing
systems that can mimic the human brain in low power
consumption and high computing efficiency. He ex­
pressed his amazement at the rapid development of
India in the last fifteen years after his first visit. During
the current visit, he is presenting papers at IIT-Mumbai, Trinity College of Engineering, Trivandrum and IT-
Benares Hindu University.

Joining the conference remotely via Google Hangout, Mrs.
Nishitha Jetta, lead engineer at General Aviation, Bangalore,
briefed the audience on the latest trends in smart manufacturing
through virtual systems and 3D printing. She happily noted that
with the advent of robotics, more women can enter into successful
careers in Mechanical Engineering with all the leading interna­
tional companies now aiming for gender equality in the field.

Nutritious Worms that also Produce Bioplastic!

Dr. Sudesh Kumar is a faculty at the University Sains Malaysia who collaborates with expert teams from
MIT, USA and RIKEN, Japan. Delivering his keynote address at Trinity College, he stressed on the need
of academic research to be geared towards commercially viable and socially responsible products and
services.
Edible meal worms that are now a recognized possible future food with high protein for human consump­
tion could also help us as mass producers of bioplastic! Feeding on the microbial rich bioplastic base ma­
terial created from palm tree sap, the meal worms, which are larvae of a beetle species, excrete nearly
100% pure bioplastic which is fully biodegradable. Earlier experiments were conducted in rats which
produced bioplastic pellets. These animals help us by pass the expensive chemical process that is other­
wise required to produce bioplastics. These exciting and interesting developments were shared by
Dr. Sudesh Kumar, one of the w orld’s leading microbiologist and biotechnologist at the 3rd International
Conference on Innovative Approaches in Mechanical Engineering and M aterial Sciences (IAMM) at the
Trinity College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram.
Dr. David N V, the head of research at University
of Technology, Malaysia, congratulated the IAMM
conference for its growth year after year. In this
year's keynote address, his latest research on natu­
ral fibre based absorption and cushioning material
were presented. A specimen of starch based bio­
degradable plastic disposable cup was distributed
among the audience. He outlined the immense pos­
sibilities that coir offers as a material that can ben­
efit Kerala directly.
