The intern organized product launch folders, PPAP shelves, and first/last piece shelves to keep information organized. They tested parts during production for weight, dimensions, and defects to identify issues. The intern also learned to use Microsoft Access by fixing databases and creating new ones to track production data like scrap and VM shot counts. This improved organization and made key data easier to access.

2. Product Launch Folders
I worked on making product launch folders for all the new parts
that were coming into production. Each part has its own folder;
in that folder is a sheet that gives information about the part.
This information includes the part weight, estimated percent
scrap, platform, launch date, and other information important to
the launch of the part. The people involved with the product
launch have their own folders that include checklists for the
duties necessary for them to perform for the launch.
Purpose:
To keep the data for each launch in one organized place.

3. PPAP Shelves
Production Part Approval Process(PPAP)-parts must be
documented so that the supplier and customer are aware
of the specifications of the parts.
I went through all the parts and found their manufactured
date and the PPAP approval date by using the folders in
Treemen library.
I organized the parts and color coded the PPAP shelves.
Purpose:
This makes it easier to find the PPAP for the part you need.

4. First/ Last Piece Shelves
I made labels for the new production parts and found a
place for them on the shelves. I made sure all the parts
that were already on the shelves had a master part sample,
if the master part was missing I found one.
Purpose:
The first piece/last piece board shows how the press is
running throughout the day.
It important to update these shelves because it is one of the
things the auditor looks for. Another reason for updating
these shelves is because if an employee has a question about
the quality of a product they can compare it with the master
part to see if they are the same.

5. And More Organizing!
I systematized the folders in the Treemen library.. I
made a place for each of the customer folders. Under
each customer the folders are arranged numerically.
I organized the defect cabinets by each press cell. I
got rid of old parts that we no longer make and
labeled spaces for the new production parts.
Purpose:
Organization cuts down on mistakes and time spent
searching for what you need.

6. Design of Experiments (DOE’s)
KOH testing- I tested the PES parts in different locations on the
reel that goes into the VM chamber. I tested parts near the
chamber door, in the middle of the reel, and the parts the
furthest back in the oven.
As a result of the test we found out that none of the VM parts
passed the 10 minute KOH trial which simulates wear of the
metalizing. We also concluded that the parts nearest to the
chamber door were receiving less metallizing then all the other
parts.
Purpose:
To find out if the holes in the VM piping let enough metallizing
through and to see if the metallizing was spread out evenly.

7. DOE’s cont.
Mantle Appliques-We tested the DPI appliques on the
press cell to see if the robot would grab them. For every
mantle that was defective or short shot we kept track of
what DPI cavity the applique was and also what Treemen
cavity it was.
This information was important because it showed that
DPI’s cavity 1 was causing most of the defects.
Purpose:
To find out if the defective parts were coming from a specific
cavity.

8. Weights and Dimensions
Everyday I would take five samples of each part running in the
press cells and do their weights and dimensions.
I learned how to use a pin gage and a caliper to measure parts. I
also learned how to measure a part on a gage.
Once I averaged the weights of five sample parts I would plot it
on a control chart. We talk about control charts in school so it
was nice to actually see one being used in industry.
The weights and dimensions were checked every day so that if a
part did not meet the customer specifications we could see what
press cell it is running on, what lot number it is, and who was
operating the press cell.

9. Microsoft Access
During my time at Treemen I learned how to use Access by
fixing problems in the databases.
I made new buttons in the Scrap database so you can
search the database by part number or through a date
range.
I made a database for VM shot counts and I am working on
a database for VM productivity.
Purpose:
To make the scrap database easier to sort through.
To determine how many shots the VM should be cleaned.
