Travis Perkins Group Induction programme
The challenge
In 2007, the Travis Perkins group
acquired six well-known suppliers
of building materials and supplies:
Wickes, Tile Giant, Keyline, City
Plumbing, CCF and Benchmarx.
Travis Perkins needed an
induction and product knowledge
programme to improve the
group’s corporate identity and
assess existing training.
The client also wanted a
programme that was suitable
for employees of each of the
companies under the group
umbrella.
Having looked at all the training
materials available in the
different companies, Travis
Perkins decided to base the new
solution on the existing induction
programme that Ashford had
previously produced for Wickes.

The solution
ATT created booklets containing
a combination of generic
information and content tailored
to each individual company’s
needs.
Clear and concise text written in
plain English, easy-to-understand
graphics, relevant photographs
and visually stimulating layout
combine to create motivational
and informative manuals.
The early sections, entitled “Who
we are”, “What we do” and “How
we do it”, are printed in black and
white, which helped save costs.
The product knowledge section,
“What we sell”, is printed in full
colour to enhance the learning.
How we did it
Step 1: The text
Beginning with Wickes, ATT
copy-edited content supplied by
the client, adjusting grammar and
tone to ensure the text “spoke to”
the employees who would use
the materials.
ATT proofread the text and the
client approved the content.
Step 2: The design & DTP
ATT designed new page layouts
for the text pages. The client
approved the designs and ATT
desktop-published the manuals.
Step 3: The finished booklets
ATT suggested presenting the
solution in the form of A5
wiro-bound booklets. These
replaced the more expensive and
somewhat cumbersome binder
format of the existing materials.
The results
The Wickes manual became
the template and benchmark for
induction and product knowledge
training in all the other umbrella
companies. To date, ATT has
completed the Induction and
Product Knowledge Manual for
Wickes, Tile Giant, Benchmarx
and CCF.
The manuals are each tailored to
the specific business objectives
of the individual companies, and
are being successfully used by
employees.
ATT will shortly complete the
other two manuals in the series,
for Keyline and City Plumbing.
Ashford has been producing
training solutions for Wickes
for 12 years.
