Springing into action!
Welcome to the second issue of
Outside the box.
Spring has finally arrived, and with
it all sorts of fresh new events.
So, what better time to update
you on what’s new in our world?
In Issue 2 of our news bulletin
we’ll be talking about the new
challenges in progress and the
imaginative solutions that we
have developed.
We’d like to share details of three
of the exciting projects that we’re
currently working on.
Feeding minds at BaxterStorey
BaxterStorey is the country’s largest privately owned
food service company, providing catered facilities for
major clients such as Marks & Spencer, Barclays, IPC Media
and Cisco.
We are currently
writing a suite of
five workbooks
on attitude,
appearance,
communication,
ownership and
selling skills that
will eventually be
linked to a fun board game.
These books need to
be correct technically,
but tailored to the
learners’ explicit needs
in an engaging way.
And our track record
of similar projects
means we’re up for
that challenge!
Virtual pets
Pets at Home is the UK’s leading specialistretailer of pet foods and pet products– an award-winning company that was recentlyacquired by a private equity firm for nearly £1bn.
During the past ten years Ashford TailoredTraining has written and produced more than25 titles for Pets at Home. These have all beendelivered in a paper-based format in the formof workbooks.
The business is now building an online learner management system (LMS), and has asked
us to “re-purpose” the book assets and produce a captivating and interactive e-learning
solution to deliver assessments for its flagship four-step training programme.
You have the power
You have a very special power that helps you deliver
an amazing service to your customers. Look at these
pictures and see if you can guess what this power is
– and you might find that you already use it in your
job without even thinking about it!
Tick all the pictures that show a power that you might
use at work.
Think about the other special powers that you bring to
your work and. (If you find it hard to decide what your
special powers are, ask yourself what comes easily to
you at work. For example, it might be “I make all my
customers smile” or “I make the world’s best coffee”.
Or you can ask a good friend at work what other
people rely on you to do well.)
Write down your thoughts here.
You probably guessed that you might not be able to
leap over tall buildings or make electricity. But you do
have the power to show a positive attitude while you
are at work.
A positive attitude is the extra ingredient that you add
to customer service. And it’s “attitude” that will affect
your customers’ decision to come back and buy from
you (or not to buy from you!) the next time. Although
you might think that your attitude is all in your head,
other people can tell a lot about your outlook on life
when they look at and listen to you!
Note your own definition of attitude here.
There are lots of definitions but, in general, your
attitude can be summed up as “your way of looking
at life; a combination of the way you think, feel and
do things”.
But the ability to have a positive attitude in your work
isn’t your only power! You have other powers that
are special to you and that help you deliver the best
possible customer service.

Other projects we’ve recently completed include: two products for leading catering, hospitality and
facilities management groups – a diversity workbook for Elior UK and unit diaries for Sodexo;
luxury retailer Harvey Nichols’ Steps to Success training programme; product knowledge
for home improvement retailer Wickes and a checkout learning development package for
Midlands Co-op.
On board with DHL
DHL Global Forwarding UK is just one part of the
worldwide DHL organization, which operates in nearly
200 countries and offers a portfolio of air freight, ocean
freight and customs services covering all industry sectors.
In this project, our
client supplied
content for its
Get on Board induction
book. Our role
was to restructure,
copy-edit the text and
introduce activities.
We also designed the
page layout, linked to
the corporate style,
producing a dynamic
and engaging printed
workbook.

Harassment (and bullying)
All employees have the right to work in an environment which is free from any form of actual, or
perceived, harassment, threat or intimidation.
What is the definition of harassment? Give some examples.
What should you do if you think that you have been harassed?
If you upset someone unintentionally might this still be regarded as harassment? YES or NO
We take these issues seriously. If we consider that you have acted inappropriately, you may be subject
to disciplinary action which could include summary dismissal.
