Proud to lead a team that brings the VCS a range of resources to support strategic use and management of ICT to help organisations deliver their mission
Talk will cover Why are these issues still current? How can we address them? Case studies Horror story Success story Next steps
New solutions = new challenges e.g. computers allowed us to do things quicker, better... Then to share resources like printers, files, internet etc. we needed networks, networks increase technology complexity and need for proper management. Web 2.0 tools, social networking provide unprecedented opportunities for extending reach but… which spaces should we be in facebook, blogger, twitter, myspace etc? how do we decide? How do keep control of our message? – Organisations often hampered by a lack of strategic thinking around technology adoption so it’s understandable why some decide not to get on the technology adoption “merry go round” Change management issues not fully appreciated – when adopting technology e.g. databases, networks etc. Tech can be difficult to understand – all agreed on that! No capacity / under resourced – Orgs can’t or don’t put resource into effective ICT management or planning, Don’t make the time / space to think about how technology can help them deliver their services better or into managing their basic ICT infrastructure effectively. Skill deficits / money deficits / and knowledge deficits -
To illustrate issue… – ICT Hub baseline survey 2007; Lasa survey for LB Lambeth 2008) : Most organisations saw computers and the internet as fairly important or vital to their work: Computers (85%) and the Internet (96%) “vital” or “fairly important” to their work. But… 51% don’t update anti-virus software on a regular basis 65% don’t back-up data on a regular basis (“it won’t happen to us attitude”) 55% lack an ICT budget
It won’t happen to us (no backups, antivirus, disaster planning etc.) Technology not seen as integral to service delivery – it’s something “over there” and often scary to boot… Key decision devolved to wrong person – case study later… Attitudes can be slow to change – we need to keep plugging away!
Fund ICT at a realistic level – recognise it as a core cost: Building Bridges to ICT excellence project, ICT Champion working to help funders and organisations they fund with this Fund infrastructure organisations to provide appropriate support to frontline groups Information advice and resources – provision of resources and sometimes hand holding, direct and iterative support to enable and capacity build organisations to think more strategically around how ICT can help deliver mission, appreciate the full cost of ownership, budget and plan appropriately etc. Knowledgebase, UK Riders, ICT Learning, Suppliers Directory, Building Bridges project, Circuit Rider support, ICT Champion (mention security guide if available) Encourage / incentivise – help organisations to take responsibility for thinking about this stuff! Building Bridges project, ICT Champion
Build a market of trusted support – trusted sources of support that understands the sector, and its needs so can provide appropriate solutions – standards and benchmarking, information sharing, trusted information resources, e.g. ICT learning project, circuit rider principles, Suppliers directory Share failures as well as successes – so we can learn from each other, not repeat the bad stuff, be inspired by the good stuff and not have to reinvent the wheel: knowledgebase, ICT Champion, Computanews, London ICT bulletin , ICT Hub case studies Multiple channels – (online and offline) for pushing the messages home – provide spaces and platforms for brainstorming, developing and sharing ideas, explore new ways of increasing reach e.g. working more closely with funders to support the organisations they fund. Some of the ways we’re doing this: Building Bridges Project , Knowledgebase, London ICT bulletin, Computanews, UK Riders, ICT Champion, knowledgebase forums Lead by example – infrastructure organisations, funders, etc. push organisations to think about this and think about this themselves, funders champion importance of ICT with other funders: ICT Champion
