Traveling throguh the Dark by William Stafford
Traveling through the Dark by William Stafford is essentially a short poem that was written based on personal experience. The poem starts out with an
unnamed, anonymous character which is also the narrator of the poem as he tells of a haunting but sad memory in first person. The story begins by
telling of how a cautious traveler in the night comes across a dying deer but with an unborn child waiting to be born. What the traveler chooses to do
with the deer and her child is a conflict that will decide their fate. The poem is a 'sentimental poem' that is both a memory from the past and a lesson
of morals by Stafford that draws the reader in and makes them ponder; "what would I do if I were in this situation?" Being written in first person,
Stafford puts the reader into the traveler's position and by this, the reader can experience what is happening as if it were them in the situation.
The short poem begins with a traveler driving along a narrow road by the Wilson River in Oregon, United States. He stumbles upon a dead doe on
the road and with good intentions, tries to move it out of the way for safe travel of future drivers. He realises that the doe is pregnant with an unborn
child and this is where the traveler comes into internal conflict with himself. He hesitates with the choices of helping other drivers by tossing the doe
with an unborn fawn into the water or saving it as if he knew how to. In the end, the traveler does not save the doe and tosses it into the river.

Hungry Bird Short Story
The Hungry Bird
"Good Morning ladies and gentlemen. May I have your attention please? Passengers travelling on Emirates flight EK 547 flying to Dubai may
proceed to board the aircraft." The time is finally up! Excitement exploded as if an extinct volcano erupted all of a sudden. I hurriedly walked
through the boarding bridge with each atom bomb erupting into excitement, as I took each step towards the aircraft. "Hello, and welcome aboard,
may I see your boarding pass please?" said a beautiful looking angel in a sweet voice. I was ushered to my seat with my seat belt fastened. "Ladies and
gentlemen, I kindly request you to take your seats and fasten your seatbelts as we are preparing for take–off. Cabin Crew prepare for take –off."
Contentment reached to its highest peak but eventually turned into a moment of stomping heartbeats as I felt myself go all the way up, up and above.
"Cabin crew prepare for landing," and a few minutes later "welcome to Dubai International Airport, where the local time is 8.am in the morning and
the outside temperature is 86 degrees Fahrenheit." Hooray, it's finally here! My nerves charged up and lit me bright from the inside like a fluorescent
bulb. I went out of the airport to the bus waiting outside. It felt like I was thrown into a planet outside of the universe. What an exotic view! The tall
buildings stared at me with their frightening shadows casted over me like cops surrounding a criminal. An amazing fact was that the authentic Arabian

Air Travel Literature Review
Demand for air travel is embarking on a period of unprecedented growth with expectations that by 2030 the number of commercial planes around the
world will nearly double to 47,000 (John Mandyck, 2017). This literature review will outline the growth of aviation and current issues surrounding the
growth of Air Travel combined with its scope to be sustainable. Topics such as green technology, public awareness and behaviour are the focus of this
review. The meaning of sustainability is varied and highly contested as a specific definition, however for this review it will referred to as 'Avoidance
of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance' (Oxford Dictionary).
Increased demand in tourism and trade particularly makes air travel less sustainable as the environmental externalities that already exist are
exacerbated. Increased demand for air travel without innovation into sustainable technology means continued damaging effects to the environment. Air
travel is an increasingly popular phenomena and air transport volume is now five times as large as it was in 1970 (Journal of Sustainable Tourism,
2009). This statistic is useful in that it creates an overall idea air travel is increasing, but its meaning is too ambiguous for proper effect. The' volume
of air transport' could mean the number of flights per week, or the number of sold out flights etc. Although similar, each varying meaning that the
reader chooses to adopt would lead to different

The Beach Literary Analysis Paper
The Beach by Alex Garland Analysis Paper There are some travelers who see a "paradise" as their final destination; however, it may end up to be
exactly opposite of what a paradise should be. This can be seen in Alex Garland's The Beach. The novel is about several backpackers, Richard,
Francoise, and Etienne, who come together and travel to an island community, their paradise, within Thailand. Ultimately, the story portrays the idea of
a utopia–like society taking a turn for the worst and becoming a dystopia, something that the backpackers would not have expected. Throughout the
story, the theme of a utopia turning into a dystopia could be seen through symbolism such as the "cancer" of traveling and the destruction that it brings.

Along the way, Richard left behind instructions on how to get to the island for Americans that they met along the way. Mainly because it is in a
secure area, it can be inferred that something bad will eventually happen on the islands, thus creating a clear image of how the cancer spreads. The
spread of this cancer initially starts when Daffy shares the secret beach with Richard and his friends, who later shares it with other travelers. By the
time they arrive on the island, Richard, Etienne, and Francois discover that the beach is right next to another island with fields that cultivate marijuana
which can also foreshadows negative events to happen.
For a while life on the island started out perfect, like a true utopian society as Richard states "'You fish, swim, eat, laze around, and everyone 's so
friendly. It 's such simple stuff, but... If I could stop the world and restart life, put the clock back, I think I 'd restart it like this. For everyone.'"
(Beach 106.) However, right when life on the beach paradise started to seem perfect, a chain of unfortunate events began to occur. A shark attack took
place causing the severe injury in one member and the death of another and after becoming an outcast from the rest of the community, the man who
was injured was later killed. Afterwards, a majority of the travelers in the community ate raw food which led to more than half of them to undergo a
serious illness. With the whole

Persuasive Essay On Study Abroad
Studying Abroad
COMMSA or the Communications Study Abroad Program is an opportunity everyone should be able to achieve. Being able to study in a foreign
country gives students the chance to see differences in how they receive an education verse the new location they are studying in. San Jose State
University is a huge supporter of students having this opportunity and even has uniquely styled programs made specifically for the Communications
department. The study abroad program page on our SJSU website shows students two options that are specifically for Communication students for the
summer of 2018, students could experience places like Jyväskylä, Finland or Berlin Germany, this is only the start of places that are offered to
students. The Jyväskylä, Finland and Beijing, China trips are currently on hold, so if a student wanted to get a better understanding of what the
Communications department is offering for a study abroad program the Berlin, Germany trip could most likely answer some of their questions. The trip
runs from June 11–29th in the summer of 2018, and has a focus of enlightening people on the city's dark past but seemingly bright future. This trip is
designed to show students WWII memorials and how the people of Berlin are constantly trying to deal with their hard past, but also exploring the
local spots were citizens are trying to create sustainable living and "greener" lifestyles. Not only would you learn about the rich history of the city by

The Role Of Travel Literature: V. S. Naipaul
The nature of the pattern of a travelogue is determined by the personality of the writer. V.S. Naipaul is a zealous traveller, like Hakluyt, Marco
Polo, Darwin, Defoe and so many other sailors and sojourners; he has travelled far and wide. His travel writing exhibits various aspects in the light
of history, ethnography, sociology, aggression, concern for weak, sympathy for sufferers and his grand evaluation of men, manners, objects and
development of a country. He has been one of the greatest Caribbean writers of Indian origin, writing in English. As a novelist he is an international
figure and exceptional. Vidyadhar Suraj Prasad Naipaul was born in 1932 in an Indian Brahmin family at Chaguanas. His father See Prasad was a

The first country which Naipaul paid visit to was Iran, during the month of Ramzan. It was the day for election of an assembly of experts who would
work out an Islamic constitution called Iraday or Aabath. At the very outset however Naipaul realizes that "the dream of the society purely ruled by
faith . . . that dream of the society of believers excluded me." (7) In Iran Naipaul saw an atmosphere which was not fully religious. He came across
people who were disillusioned and frustrated due to the change of government which had taken place under the leadership of Ayotallah Khomeini. The
ouster of the Shah led to bloodshed leaving behind wounded populace and Tehran city shattered and torn by violence. The symbols of ongoing
revolution were visible everywhere. Naipaul was bothered by the fact that the Ayotallah was using prayers as a demonstration of revolutionary unity.
The use of prayers was not for religious purpose but for political occasion, Naipaul

Why Do Some Budgeting And Planning Can Make Travel Happen?
Everyone at some point in their life needs to get out of their hometown, leave their native state or province, and depart their homeland. There is more
out there to see than you could experience in one lifetime, but the point is you need to get out there and experience as much as you can because you
cannot overvalue the experiences and stories that are born of travelling. If you are not possessed of unlimited financial resources (*read filthy rich),
however, you will need to do some budgeting and planning to make travel happen. Honestly, even if you just plan a week long roadtrip to a state you've
never visited, or a city you've never explored, the trip will be well worth whatever you spend. To help stretch those hard earned travel... Show more

Kindle Voyager
You are going to find that when you travel, especially by plane, train, or bus, that you have a lot of time on your hands. I advise spending a little
time taking in the scenery, but that really gets old after about an hour or so. You could also try to talk to the people around you, but most people
not travelling for pleasure generally don't seem to be feeling very chatty. So, what do you do rather than recreate all the awkwardness of John
Candy in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles? Read a book. It's a great way to pass the time, and even if you don't enjoy fiction or literature, you can
benefit a lot from reading about your destination or places along the way. Learn the history and culture of where you are going, and you will enrich
your travel experience tenfold. Here's the drawback: books take up space and add weight you have to lug around airports, train stations, and car rental
offices. Solution? Get a Kindle Voyager. This little number from Amazon is only 7.6mm thick, and can be used for nearly a month one a single charge
of its battery. Try and do that with your smartphone or tablet. Better still, the backlight of the display auto–adjusts to your current lighting environment.

Literary Analysis
ВЃ "The Road Not Taken" Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" describes a traveler faced with a choice of which one of two roads to travel.
He knows not where either road might lead. In order to continue on his journey, he can pick only one road. He scrutinizes both roads for the
possibilities of where they may take him in his travels. Frost's traveler realizes that regret is inevitable. Regardless of his choice, he knows that he will
miss the experiences he might have encountered on the road not taken. Images in the poem reflect the difficulties of the choice the traveler faces. The
difficulty is shown in the passage "long I stood" (3)... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He predicts that he will always remember this moment of choice and will be telling it "with a sigh" (16) when he is old. His choice will have made
"all the difference" (20) and affected his whole journey. Frost creates a tone of inevitability that no matter what the choice, there will always be
regret. Frost presents the traveler's choice of paths as a metaphor for the difficult decisions a person must make in life. The divergent paths are the
choices to be made at various points along the way. Regardless of how he tries, the traveler cannot see beyond where the path is "bent in the
undergrowth" (5). Likewise, nobody can predict what effect one choice will have on his life. The traveler sees the two paths as very similar or
"just as fair" (6). As much as the traveler would like to return to the diverging roads, he realizes that he will not get another chance to travel the
other path. With maturity comes a resignation that a choice has affected a person's life and there is no going back. He also tries to make the best of
his decision by saying that it has "made all the difference." (20). In "The Road Not Taken", images of the bright woods and wide open opportunity to
choose are contrasted with the indecision and regret of only being able to travel one path. Word choice and a slight sorrowful tone reinforce the theme
of regret. Frost presents divergent roads as a metaphor for the choices a person must make in life. The traveler's rueful resignation that

The people around us make experiences great and...
The people around us make experiences great and unforgettable. I was oblivious to this fact before my first completely independent summer trip for
three weeks. In the past, I always traveled with my parents. They were all great vacations but they were not planned or controlled by me. It was all
up to my mom. This time, however, I was the one who found the opportunity to go to the seaside with a group of young people and spend 21 days
there. My parents were happy to let me go on this trip; as they also saw it as an exciting opportunity. It was up to me to plan it all on my own. I
learned about the surroundings of the area I was to go to, the organization which planned the trip, got to know the people and found a way to get there.

It was an evening when everyone started to relax and try to be him or herself. Being part of a fun group is a great experience. Playing games,
building sand castles, splashing in the water and enjoying all the different flavors of ice cream may sound like kindergarten. Who knew that grown up
kinds enjoy the same things as our little brothers and sisters? There were so many different games we played, starting from charades, card games, word
games, team games and ending with full out competitions on limbo, volleyball and long–distance swimming against the current. It really made each of
us more relaxed and at home. Our group was fun, open and ready to try all the new actives offered by whoever. It was great being part of such a
positive group of people. An important part of this trip for me was communication with boys. I was never one to hang out with boys much. Here I
was friends with many guys and girls. We all had fun at the beach, during games and at the parties. With some I connected more than with others
and with some even more than I had expected. This was the first time I had "fallen in love". Sure, I was to get my heart broken later, but I
suspected nothing about it back then. It was a new feeling that I did not expect and it made me feel scared. Moreover, the feeling was towards a guy
I was convinced was totally just a friend and nothing more. Surprisingly for both of us, we were elected as Mr. and Ms. of

Travellers Are Leaving Their Inhibitions At The Boarding Gate
Aussie travellers are leaving their inhibitions at the boarding gate, with over a third admitting to doing things on holiday that they would never do at
home. Shedding light on the shenanigans Aussies get up to, research conducted by Southern Cross Travel Insurance shows 39 per cent of travellers
took their tastebuds for a whirl, munching on bugs and insects, while over a third got their adrenalin pumping with cliff jumping, river tubing and
bungy jumping. Other wildcard behaviour included skipping the sun lounger for stripclubs, gambling, and late night swims. Some travellers even
brought home a special souvenir in the form of a new tattoo or piercing.

The Roles Of Travel Writing: Marco Polo And John Mandeville
Between the fourth and the fifteenth centuries, three distinct kinds of travelers traversed the vast and unfamiliar landscapes of Europe: the Scholar,
the Crusader, and the Pilgrim. In the centuries of Travel writing that followed, these categories have been seen as giving way to each other. The
pilgrim gave way to the merchant, the explorer and the philosopher.Compared to our current "small world," the lands and cultures across oceans and
over the next mountain range were a source of mystery to people of the earlier centuries. The narratives of Marco Polo and John Mandeville marked
the beginning of a new impulse in the late middle ages and transformed the traditional paradigms of pilgrimage and crusade into new forms attentive to

The study of stereotypes , thus, became very important as it relied upon the relationship between the insider and the other. Space and spatiality as
a concept has always been considered as central to the concept of power , identity and modernity. In a collection of essays by Shirley Ardener in
1981, she argued that patriarchy flourishes by creating a ' social map' on the basis of certain ground rules of behaviour that construct certain spaces
as 'feminine' and others as 'masculine' and by allocating a particular role to each on the basis of the activities that these spaces entail. 'Private ' or the
domestic, as it is called, as the arena of women and Public as that of men was a distinction that was not clearly demarcated before the advent of
nineteenth century but the ostracization of females and the restrictions put on their mobility seems to be a phenomenon existing since before
nineteenth century. 'The discourse of 'individualism' (even though the concept was not as popular for females as it was for men , that too, for 'white
men of property') in the nineteenth century , however, encouraged increasing number of women to understand mobility as a means to reimagine
themselves as 'citizens of the world' 'free' to pursue their own itineraries and to re imagine their identities away from the spectacles of femininity
restricting them.' The father or the 'father figure' was the pivot on which the patriarchal institution of family hinged. Sigmund Freud speculated in his
psychoanalysis that ' a great part of pleasure of travel lies in the fulfillment of these early wishes to escape the family and especially the father'. (
Travel, therefore, for these women was viewed as transgressive and an act of rebellion against control and vigilance. The search for a new transparent
space where reconstruction of identity could be

Limitations Of Travelling
The ability to travel anywhere, whether it is in your own country, or to another place abroad, is a privilege that is sometimes hard for others to
accept. Being able to travel can often teach you more than a job, relationship, or a lecture ever will, which is contrary to popular belief. Likewise, it is
also most certainly a gift to have the ability to experience the wonders of the outside world. However, there are many people out there who feel that
they are not in the position to be able to travel due to various reasons. Reasons such as politics between countries and simply being able to afford
traveling are some of the main issues. Authors Natalie Thomas and Hannah Peterson, both addresses the positive reasons of why people should travel.
Whereas, Lisa van Beurden and Oneika Raymond comment on the limitations of traveling. Thomas and Peterson, both who are in favor in traveling,
has accumulated many reasons why one should travel. They both believe that traveling allows people to "stretch the limits of [their] comfort zone"
(Thomas). The authors think that this is beneficial to people because even though they may be immersed in an unfamiliar and uncomfortable
surrounding, they will often find something positive to make out in the situation. Ultimately, people will discover new things, be exposed to new
cultures and make new connections and friends. Through zip lining through the forests of the Amazon to navigating the streets of Hong Kong,

Don't be an ugly American
You're a proud American and that's admirable. But boasting about your proud heritage in a country that's been to battle with the U.S. may be a bad
idea. Not everyone loves your homeland like you do. Don't be that ugly American criticizing "strange" customs and cultural differences. Don't get so
drunk or high that everyone becomes your friend (or enemy). You'll just enrage the locals and become an easy target for crime.
Don't walk alone at night
Walking alone at night in a foreign city is not advisable whether you're female or male. If you find yourself alone at night walk on the same side of
the street where other people are walking so that you don't stand out as walking alone. If you do think you are being followed don't continue on to
where you are staying. Stop and ask security or the police for help. You can also walk into any restaurant or hotel, even if it's not your own and ask for
help.
Keep a copy of the address to where you are staying
In both English and the native tongue of the country you are in, keep a copy of your address on your phone. Write it also in a notebook that you
keep in your bag or wallet. In fact, everyone in your group should do the same in case you separate and lose your friends.

The Theme Of Traveling In Steinbeck's Of Mice And Men
Traveling, to go from one place to another, as by, car, train, foot, plane or ship. The novels, Travels With Charley and Of Mice and Men, written by
John Steinbeck share the theme of traveling. Steinbeck in Travels With Charley has his french poodle he travels across America with, and in Of
Mice and Men Lenny has George by his side. These books share many similiarities. In Travels With Charley Steinbeck sets out to see the people of
the world trying to pursue the American Dream and in Of Mice and Men the characters are stuck working towards the hopeless American Dream.
Steinbeck received the Noble prize for his ability to write realistically and imaginative and his good social perception, and which these traits can be

Well, The American Dream is written into the Declaration of Independence: "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." The American Dream is
the belief of the American Society that each individual can, through hard work and strength of mind, achieve everything they have ever wanted( ).
Lennie and George's dream of owning a farm and living off the "fatta the lan" symbolizes this dream. Many of the characters in Of Mice and Men
are wanting a different life that represents the American Dream. For example, George and Lennie's American Dream is owning their farm and
being their own boss and not having to listen to anyone else. Having this constant thought in mind George and Lenny always work as hard as they
can and to save up their money without spending much on their own selfs. Curley's wife is affected by the American Dream before she dies
because of her belief that she could be an actress. Even Crooks allows himself the nice fantasy of hoeing a patch of garden on Lennie's farm one
day, and Candy latches on desperately to George's vision of owning a couple of acres. Crooks is motivated by his own American Dream, which
ends up being one of inclusion and companionship. Before the action of the story begins, circumstances have robbed most of the characters of
these wishes. Curley's wife, for instance, has resigned herself to an unfulfilling marriage. Their journey, which awakens George to the impossibility
of this dream, sadly proves that the bitter Crooks is right: such paradises of freedom, contentment, and safety are not to be found in this world
(Kannan). Not only does Of Mice and Men relate to the American Dream but so does Travels With Charley. In Travels With Charley Steinbeck sets
out on his journey and realizes so many people in the real world are trying to achieve the American Dream. He finds a whole new breed of modern
people who were pursuing their own version of the American dream – to live free from the world of

S: Sweetie, stop making fun of your father. We both are in anxiety about you. But let's return to travelling by ship. I'm sure that breathing a fresh air and
admiring sunsets will return a good condition to our nerves and health.
O: Darling, that's all very nice, but I'm not sure about the possible cost of such voyage. It seems to me that it'll be very high, because there're a lot of
activities for recreation and entertainment, good conveniences and so on.
L: What are you driving at, daddy? I've always thought that we have enough money to afford this. Am I right?
O: Yes, of course, but yourmother wanted to make renovations not so long ago. So I guess that too big expenses are unnecessary now.

Wanderlust and Travel Nt
Journeys can include those that are physical, mental or inner and are often accompanied by challenges that can change the individual mostly for the
better. Journeys are taken for many reasons, some are taken from choice and others are compulsory. A journey can be lone or be accompanied. The
outcomes of journeys may shape the individual as a person. I was not aware of the depth or many aspects of concept of journey till our study of it.
After our study I have developed a appreciation not only of all of the things I have mentioned but the affect that journey has on the lives on everyone of
us. Wanderlust by Dorothy Hewett explores journeys, both physical and imaginative. The poem starts off with a quote from another poem. "When...

Decision Making In Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken
In Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken", we are constantly pounded with with the idea of making choices. But what about choices does Frost want us
to realize? After closely reading and analyzing this piece of literature I think it's clear that Frost wants his readers to be more self dependant when it
comes to decision making. Takingthe road less traveled by is how Frost illustrates this and as we break down this piece of literature you will see that
Frost makes his message very clear in his poem. In the first stanza and line of the poem Frost immediately has exposed to us the choice at hand. "Two
roads diverged in a yellow wood."(Frost, #1). So we see this picture of two paths split into seperate ways. Choosing which path to take is a very
difficult decision for the traveler. He says he's "sorry he could not travel both" (Frost, #2) making it clear that there is this dilemma for our
protagonist on choosing which way to go. In lines three and four the traveler says "long I stood/And looked down one as far as I could."(Frost,
#3&4) Frost perfectly paints this picture of the traveler standing there arms crossed, looking down each path, and on his tippy toes trying to get the
best look possible at both paths ahead of him. In the second stanza the traveler finally makes a decision and takes the other path. This is where the tone
changes in the poem and we finally have this feeling that the traveler made the right decision. "And having perhaps the better claim,/Because it was

Decisions in Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken Essay
Decisions in Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken
Throughout our lives we are faced with a number of important decisions, decisions that determine an unseen future. The choices, though often virtually
identical, lead to different destinies and often leave us asking "what if?" There are not always signs telling us the way to go or the choice to make; we
must find out what lies ahead for ourselves. In his "The Road Not Taken," Robert Frost relates to the reader such a choice, symbolic, perhaps of any
major decision in life. The traveler in Frost's poem must blindly decide between two similar paths, and this decision greatly affects his life thereafter.
In the opening stanza, Frost takes the reader into a "yellow wood," setting the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The traveler, unable to see what lies ahead, turns his attention to what he can see, only to find it just as mysterious.
To begin the second stanza, the traveler turns back to what lies immediately before him, trying to evaluate the second road. In reading this stanza it is
important to remember the poem is being narrated after–the–fact. The narrator is giving feelings he had at the time along with the knowledge he has
now. Because neither path has an obvious advantage, the traveler makes himself believe the second road "was grassy and wanted wear" even though
"the passing there had worn them about the same." As we often do, the traveler conjures up a reason to do something, even though there is no logical
explanation for doing it. The path appears as if it "wanted wear," drawing the narrator in. The narrator realizes now his past compulsion and sees that
neither path had any "better claim."
Even though the narrator has decided on the second path, he "kept the first for another day." The traveler wants to take the first road some day to
find out how his life could have been. Even with this compelling sense of wonder, the narrator knows "how way leads on to way" and that he hasn't
enough time to change every past decision in order to lead a different life. In this third stanza, the traveler finally goes on his way, but, like most
would, he takes along a nagging wonder.

How Does Charles Dickens Use Satire In Huckleberry Finn
Charles Dickens, a European writer, travelled to the United States in 1842, early in his career. Dickens' account of the visit, American Notes, was one
of the first British viewpoints to demonstrate that an Englishman did not have to be an aristocrat to distrust the American rhetoric. Dickens charged
Americans with incivility, arrogance, anti–intellectualism, a predilection for violence, and hypocrisy, particularly about anti–democratic policies such
as slavery. Mark Twain, an American writer, wrote of his own travels in his work "The Innocents Abroad." His work described his experiences at some
of the world's greatest wonders, with a satirical dryness that seems to devalue the sites' inflated reputations. Both Mark Twain and Charles Dickens
stripped their travel writings of romanticism and blind praise, therefore relating their experiences in a brutally honest fashion.
Chapter 8 of Charles Dickens' "American Notes" begins with a distaste that Dickens carries through the rest of his United States travel. American
travelers encountered by Dickens are described to "display an amount ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Stereotypes Of The Traveler
TRAVELLER, TOURIST AND BACKPACKER The concept of the traveller is seen very differently in comparrison to the tourist. Both have the
same interest in being in another country and experiencing another culture, but to what extent are they experiencing it in the same way? The
tourism industry has created these different types of categories of people who travel to other countries that have evolved over hundreds of years.
Modern travel has become more affordable to people of all different backgrounds and with growing technology it has helped create this booming
economy that the whole world in some way benefits off of. In todays society it is now more affordable and easier to reach another country
compared to 100 years ago. This has created both titles of the tourist and travller as the tourist has become a negative title to carry as sterotypes on
todays society have created a tarnished reputation of tourists. It is widely talked about how the tourist and traveller have two different meanings, but
are they really that different? If so which title would fit the backpaper? As a traveller or tourist? This will be analysed throughout so there can be an
evaluation and judgement made to help find the answers to these questions. THE TOURIST The toursit label comes with the stigma that they are loud,
complain and do not fully emerse themselves in the enviroment they are in. There are many stereotypes of a tourist and for many people being seen as
a tourist is a bad thing because of the

Once we are exposed to the variety of cultures and mentalities of the world, we acquire a broad perspective which gives the freedom to step out of the
society–constructed image of ourselves and to become the person who we really are. Moreover, travel fills our body, soul and mind with strength and
positivity and all our thoughts, words, actions and emotions will then radiate from this inner core.
Merriam Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature definestravel literature as:
Non fiction prose form that depends largely on the wit, powers of observation, and character of the traveler for its success. In the past centuries, the
traveler tended to be an adventurer or a connoisseur of art, landscape, or strange customs who may also have been a writer of merit. (Kuiper 1128)
Travel narratives are prose forms which are written out of traveler's personal experience and they are considered as an important genre of literary
study. They are records of places, people and events of a particular region from the traveler's point of view.
Roy Bridges, a critic on travel narrative comments on the significance of the genre in The Cambridge Companion to Travel Writing:

Impacts Of Tourism On Tourism
Introduction
Tourism is one of the largest industries in the world, but can easily be affected by several issues ranging from economic and political issues to safety
and security concerns. Health issues are closely related to safety concerns, which can have a major negative impact on tourism. A current health issue
that is affecting the tourism industry in the US, Caribbean, and Latin American countries is the Zika virus. The Zika virus is spread by the bite of an
infected Aedes species mosquitos. It can be spread from a pregnant woman to her unborn fetus, which can result in microcephaly, along with other birth
defects. Zika can also be contracted by having sex with an infected partner or by a blood transfusion. Currently, there is no treatment or vaccine to
prevent being infected with the virus. According to the CDC, the best prevention method is to do everything possible to prevent mosquito bites.
Current Impacts of Zika on Tourism The Zika virus has already shown a decrease in tourism in Florida, and also in Caribbean and Latin American
countries. In South Beach, Florida, which is a "Zika zone", there are many business owners who are worried about future economic fallout. The rise
in confirmed cases of Zika has resulted in a higher percentage of concerned travelers. Local business owners have reported guests calling and
cancelling hotel reservations (Luscombe, 2016). Caribbean and Latin American countries have reported some decrease in percentage of travelers who

Time Travel In Literature From The Anglo-Saxon Period And...
For a brief moment suppose that time travel exists. A conundrum that has influenced our movies, our stories, and proved impossible by the laws of
physics, is now a reality. What is the first thing to do: Kill Hitler? Save the Library of Alexandria? Suppose that a time traveler has a great love for
literature, specifically literature from the Anglo–Saxon period and the English Renaissance. These two periods had vastly different societies, and due to
this, vastly different literature. If the time traveler were to compare the literature from both periods, they would see that as time progresses, the themes
in the literature from these periods shift from the bravado of glory and honor to the quieter aspects of life.
While time travel may not be an opportunity at the moment, it is possible to step into the traveler's shoes by examining the historical context
surrounding these periods. Foremost, the Anglo–Saxon period, was a time when brawn, not brains, won the crown. The Celtic peoples, or Gauls, were
loose–knit tribal people who were chased to Great Britain by the Romans, and built Hadrian's Wall to protect themselves. The Germanic people were
very similar to the Celtic people: both used human sacrifice and had warrior kings. This was a time of the Vikings, for adventure. It was a time when
the old gods–Dagda, Lugh, Odin, Thor, and many others–ruled. In the midst of all of this barbarism, it was oddly progressive, as women could divorce
their husbands and own property. As time

The Regretful Traveler in Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken
Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" (rpt. In Thomas R. Arp and Greg Johnson, Perrine's Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense, 10th ed. [Boston:
Wadsworth, 2009] 725 presents itself with a traveler that is dissatisfied with the decision that he has to make. A situation of life sometime requires a
decision to be made between two things that will have a huge impact in the end. The consequences are not always what we expect.
I will now explain how Frost used literal and figurative techniques to describe a man traveling through the woods and his thoughts on deciding which
road to take. Literally, the man appeared to be content with his travels until he reached the fork in the road, and had to make a decision. Figuratively, he

Figuratively, he has to make a big decision, and does not have any one to give advice as to which road to take.
In leaves no step had trodden black
Perhaps the traveler gave up fun and irresponsibility to live what appears to be a responsible and productive life. The traveler stated that he would
save the first road but knew that there was a chance that he would not come back to it, because he had anticipated finding more opportunities on the
second road. In the last stanza the traveler indicates his regrets with a sigh. It is possible that he sighed because he missed out on life and could have
had wealth, or the sigh could mean that he accepts the decision that he chose. The paradox that Frost uses when he put the sigh in the last stanza,
allows the traveler to be satisfied with his decision or discontented.
To give the poem a musical affect, Frost used masculine approximaterhyme, such as would and could, fair and wear, and black and back. He cleverly
uses feminine rhyme in which only half of the word rhyme. Such as, hence and difference in the fourth stanza, and diverge and I in the first stanza. He
uses both assonance and consonance on words that falls at regular intervals, and the rhyming is masculine. Frost also uses metonymy with the title The
Road Not Taken because he is not actually talking about a road, he is talking about making a decision in life.

Globalization : The North America, By Thomas Friedman Essay
Throughout history, the progressions of mankind has given way to a perpetually globalizing world. Globalization, the "process of interaction and
integration among peoples of different nations, has strengthened human ties while our race has formed societies in every corner of the globe. As our
world becomes more interconnected, the resulting blend of cultures has led numerous societal features to be shared between peoples, blurring cultural
division lines. Globalization's tying binds may frustrate many modern travelers seeking unique and special travel experiences due to the standardization
of destinations resulting from increasingly cozy international social relations, but continued and extensive human travel has demonstrated that the
essential human urge to move is a product of our search for fulfillment in what is unfamiliar and will not be suppressed by global interconnection. The
origin of modern globalization can be traced to Columbus' discovery of the North America, as argued by Thomas Friedman. European exploration
during the Age of Discovery invited the rise of extensive European naval trade routes that invited massive exchange of European, African, and
American cultures, material resources, and biological property in the form of diseases and mestizo populations from offspring between clashing
ethnicities. Triangular trade opened the door for the introduction of foreign foods, plants, and animals into foreign societies. Establishment of European
colonies meant that

There are two requirements for taxpayers to qualifies their expense as travel expenses deduction: First, the purpose of the trip must be connected with
a trade or be employment related; Second, the taxpayer must be away from his tax home overnight or for a sufficient duration to require sleep or rest

Clearly, in Charley's case, Charley's travel expenses are related to Charley's employment and incurred in pursuit of a trade, as his job is to deliver
goods to customers for his company. However, whether Charley travels " away from home" overnight or whether these travel expenses are
necessary needs more consideration. It is critical for Charley to justify the expenses he generated is reasonably incurred in the travels away from

Beauty Of Travels : The Beauty Of Travel
The Beauty of Travel The way that we perceive the world determines who we are. Travelling to unknown places changes our perspective of the

repeatedly telling me phrases like, "Son! Don't forget to finish that piece of rice on your plate!", "Son! That pen is still capable of one last word!",
and "Son! Look at the kid over there, does he need this? No". I never understood any of my mom's routine nagging until she took me, along with

population. For example, a tour guide employed by an American company makes more than a local doctor. It was not long until I realized that my
mother's nagging for all these years was her attempt to instill gratitude into me. Our "leaving" to the Caribbean was not only for a memorable
vacation, but also for me to experience first–hand how people live in third–world countries to change my perspective of the world so I can become a

should be saved, depending on the destination. Likewise, the economy worldwide profits from all the traveling that goes on. The tax revenue for
2015 was 147.9 billion dollars ("U.S. Travel Answer Sheet"). Thus proving traveling is encouraged and a great way to spend without feeling guilty.
Furthermore, it helps build jobs! 15.1 million to be exact in the year 2015 ("U.S. Travel Answer Sheet"). How wonderful it is to be helping the world
especially those third world countries. Tourism is encouraged and it is providing profit for the world instead of just one country. What a great way to
add points to a world citizen license.
Equally, important traveling is life changing. By going outside, the usual area, city, state, country can be eye

Traveling Throguh The Dark By William Stafford

  • 1. Traveling throguh the Dark by William Stafford Traveling through the Dark by William Stafford is essentially a short poem that was written based on personal experience. The poem starts out with an unnamed, anonymous character which is also the narrator of the poem as he tells of a haunting but sad memory in first person. The story begins by telling of how a cautious traveler in the night comes across a dying deer but with an unborn child waiting to be born. What the traveler chooses to do with the deer and her child is a conflict that will decide their fate. The poem is a 'sentimental poem' that is both a memory from the past and a lesson of morals by Stafford that draws the reader in and makes them ponder; "what would I do if I were in this situation?" Being written in first person, Stafford puts the reader into the traveler's position and by this, the reader can experience what is happening as if it were them in the situation. The short poem begins with a traveler driving along a narrow road by the Wilson River in Oregon, United States. He stumbles upon a dead doe on the road and with good intentions, tries to move it out of the way for safe travel of future drivers. He realises that the doe is pregnant with an unborn child and this is where the traveler comes into internal conflict with himself. He hesitates with the choices of helping other drivers by tossing the doe with an unborn fawn into the water or saving it as if he knew how to. In the end, the traveler does not save the doe and tosses it into the river. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Hungry Bird Short Story The Hungry Bird "Good Morning ladies and gentlemen. May I have your attention please? Passengers travelling on Emirates flight EK 547 flying to Dubai may proceed to board the aircraft." The time is finally up! Excitement exploded as if an extinct volcano erupted all of a sudden. I hurriedly walked through the boarding bridge with each atom bomb erupting into excitement, as I took each step towards the aircraft. "Hello, and welcome aboard, may I see your boarding pass please?" said a beautiful looking angel in a sweet voice. I was ushered to my seat with my seat belt fastened. "Ladies and gentlemen, I kindly request you to take your seats and fasten your seatbelts as we are preparing for take–off. Cabin Crew prepare for take –off." Contentment reached to its highest peak but eventually turned into a moment of stomping heartbeats as I felt myself go all the way up, up and above. "Cabin crew prepare for landing," and a few minutes later "welcome to Dubai International Airport, where the local time is 8.am in the morning and the outside temperature is 86 degrees Fahrenheit." Hooray, it's finally here! My nerves charged up and lit me bright from the inside like a fluorescent bulb. I went out of the airport to the bus waiting outside. It felt like I was thrown into a planet outside of the universe. What an exotic view! The tall buildings stared at me with their frightening shadows casted over me like cops surrounding a criminal. An amazing fact was that the authentic Arabian ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Air Travel Literature Review Demand for air travel is embarking on a period of unprecedented growth with expectations that by 2030 the number of commercial planes around the world will nearly double to 47,000 (John Mandyck, 2017). This literature review will outline the growth of aviation and current issues surrounding the growth of Air Travel combined with its scope to be sustainable. Topics such as green technology, public awareness and behaviour are the focus of this review. The meaning of sustainability is varied and highly contested as a specific definition, however for this review it will referred to as 'Avoidance of the depletion of natural resources in order to maintain an ecological balance' (Oxford Dictionary). Increased demand in tourism and trade particularly makes air travel less sustainable as the environmental externalities that already exist are exacerbated. Increased demand for air travel without innovation into sustainable technology means continued damaging effects to the environment. Air travel is an increasingly popular phenomena and air transport volume is now five times as large as it was in 1970 (Journal of Sustainable Tourism, 2009). This statistic is useful in that it creates an overall idea air travel is increasing, but its meaning is too ambiguous for proper effect. The' volume of air transport' could mean the number of flights per week, or the number of sold out flights etc. Although similar, each varying meaning that the reader chooses to adopt would lead to different ... • 4. The Beach Literary Analysis Paper The Beach by Alex Garland Analysis Paper There are some travelers who see a "paradise" as their final destination; however, it may end up to be exactly opposite of what a paradise should be. This can be seen in Alex Garland's The Beach. The novel is about several backpackers, Richard, Francoise, and Etienne, who come together and travel to an island community, their paradise, within Thailand. Ultimately, the story portrays the idea of a utopia–like society taking a turn for the worst and becoming a dystopia, something that the backpackers would not have expected. Throughout the story, the theme of a utopia turning into a dystopia could be seen through symbolism such as the "cancer" of traveling and the destruction that it brings. "I ... Mainly because it is in a secure area, it can be inferred that something bad will eventually happen on the islands, thus creating a clear image of how the cancer spreads. The spread of this cancer initially starts when Daffy shares the secret beach with Richard and his friends, who later shares it with other travelers. By the time they arrive on the island, Richard, Etienne, and Francois discover that the beach is right next to another island with fields that cultivate marijuana which can also foreshadows negative events to happen. For a while life on the island started out perfect, like a true utopian society as Richard states "'You fish, swim, eat, laze around, and everyone 's so friendly. It 's such simple stuff, but... If I could stop the world and restart life, put the clock back, I think I 'd restart it like this. For everyone.'" (Beach 106.) However, right when life on the beach paradise started to seem perfect, a chain of unfortunate events began to occur. A shark attack took place causing the severe injury in one member and the death of another and after becoming an outcast from the rest of the community, the man who was injured was later killed. Afterwards, a majority of the travelers in the community ate raw food which led to more than half of them to undergo a serious illness. With the whole ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Being able to study in a foreign country gives students the chance to see differences in how they receive an education verse the new location they are studying in. Naipaul is a zealous traveller, like Hakluyt, Marco Polo, Darwin, Defoe and so many other sailors and sojourners; he has travelled far and wide. His travel writing exhibits various aspects in the light of history, ethnography, sociology, aggression, concern for weak, sympathy for sufferers and his grand evaluation of men, manners, objects and development of a country. He has been one of the greatest Caribbean writers of Indian origin, writing in English. As a novelist he is an international figure and exceptional. (7) In Iran Naipaul saw an atmosphere which was not fully religious. He came across people who were disillusioned and frustrated due to the change of government which had taken place under the leadership of Ayotallah Khomeini. The ouster of the Shah led to bloodshed leaving behind wounded populace and Tehran city shattered and torn by violence. The symbols of ongoing revolution were visible everywhere. • 9. Why Do Some Budgeting And Planning Can Make Travel Happen? Everyone at some point in their life needs to get out of their hometown, leave their native state or province, and depart their homeland. There is more out there to see than you could experience in one lifetime, but the point is you need to get out there and experience as much as you can because you cannot overvalue the experiences and stories that are born of travelling. If you are not possessed of unlimited financial resources (*read filthy rich), however, you will need to do some budgeting and planning to make travel happen. So, what do you do rather than recreate all the awkwardness of John Candy in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles? Read a book. • 10. Literary Analysis ВЃ "The Road Not Taken" Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken" describes a traveler faced with a choice of which one of two roads to travel. He knows not where either road might lead. In order to continue on his journey, he can pick only one road. He scrutinizes both roads for the possibilities of where they may take him in his travels. Frost's traveler realizes that regret is inevitable. Regardless of his choice, he knows that he will miss the experiences he might have encountered on the road not taken. Images in the poem reflect the difficulties of the choice the traveler faces. The difficulty is shown in the passage "long I stood" (3)... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He predicts that he will always remember this moment of choice and will be telling it "with a sigh" (16) when he is old. His choice will have made "all the difference" (20) and affected his whole journey. Frost creates a tone of inevitability that no matter what the choice, there will always be regret. Frost presents the traveler's choice of paths as a metaphor for the difficult decisions a person must make in life. The divergent paths are the choices to be made at various points along the way. Regardless of how he tries, the traveler cannot see beyond where the path is "bent in the undergrowth" (5). Likewise, nobody can predict what effect one choice will have on his life. The traveler sees the two paths as very similar or "just as fair" (6). As much as the traveler would like to return to the diverging roads, he realizes that he will not get another chance to travel the other path. With maturity comes a resignation that a choice has affected a person's life and there is no going back. He also tries to make the best of his decision by saying that it has "made all the difference." (20). In "The Road Not Taken", images of the bright woods and wide open opportunity to choose are contrasted with the indecision and regret of only being able to travel one path. Word choice and a slight sorrowful tone reinforce the theme of regret. Frost presents divergent roads as a metaphor for the choices a person must make in life. I was oblivious to this fact before my first completely independent summer trip for three weeks. In the past, I always traveled with my parents. They were all great vacations but they were not planned or controlled by me. It was all up to my mom. This time, however, I was the one who found the opportunity to go to the seaside with a group of young people and spend 21 days there. My parents were happy to let me go on this trip; as they also saw it as an exciting opportunity. It was up to me to plan it all on my own. Travellers Are Leaving Their Inhibitions At The Boarding Gate Aussie travellers are leaving their inhibitions at the boarding gate, with over a third admitting to doing things on holiday that they would never do at home. Shedding light on the shenanigans Aussies get up to, research conducted by Southern Cross Travel Insurance shows 39 per cent of travellers took their tastebuds for a whirl, munching on bugs and insects, while over a third got their adrenalin pumping with cliff jumping, river tubing and bungy jumping. • 13. The Roles Of Travel Writing: Marco Polo And John Mandeville Between the fourth and the fifteenth centuries, three distinct kinds of travelers traversed the vast and unfamiliar landscapes of Europe: the Scholar, the Crusader, and the Pilgrim. In the centuries of Travel writing that followed, these categories have been seen as giving way to each other. The pilgrim gave way to the merchant, the explorer and the philosopher.Compared to our current "small world," the lands and cultures across oceans and over the next mountain range were a source of mystery to people of the earlier centuries. The narratives of Marco Polo and John Mandeville marked the beginning of a new impulse in the late middle ages and transformed the traditional paradigms of pilgrimage and crusade into new forms attentive to experience... Space and spatiality as a concept has always been considered as central to the concept of power , identity and modernity. In a collection of essays by Shirley Ardener in 1981, she argued that patriarchy flourishes by creating a ' social map' on the basis of certain ground rules of behaviour that construct certain spaces as 'feminine' and others as 'masculine' and by allocating a particular role to each on the basis of the activities that these spaces entail. 'Private ' or the domestic, as it is called, as the arena of women and Public as that of men was a distinction that was not clearly demarcated before the advent of nineteenth century but the ostracization of females and the restrictions put on their mobility seems to be a phenomenon existing since before nineteenth century. 'The discourse of 'individualism' (even though the concept was not as popular for females as it was for men , that too, for 'white men of property') in the nineteenth century , however, encouraged increasing number of women to understand mobility as a means to reimagine themselves as 'citizens of the world' 'free' to pursue their own itineraries and to re imagine their identities away from the spectacles of femininity restricting them.' The father or the 'father figure' was the pivot on which the patriarchal institution of family hinged. Sigmund Freud speculated in his psychoanalysis that ' a great part of pleasure of travel lies in the fulfillment of these early wishes to escape the family and especially the father'. Being able to travel can often teach you more than a job, relationship, or a lecture ever will, which is contrary to popular belief. Likewise, it is also most certainly a gift to have the ability to experience the wonders of the outside world. However, there are many people out there who feel that they are not in the position to be able to travel due to various reasons. Reasons such as politics between countries and simply being able to afford traveling are some of the main issues. Authors Natalie Thomas and Hannah Peterson, both addresses the positive reasons of why people should travel. Whereas, Lisa van Beurden and Oneika Raymond comment on the limitations of traveling. Thomas and Peterson, both who are in favor in traveling, has accumulated many reasons why one should travel. They both believe that traveling allows people to "stretch the limits of [their] comfort zone" (Thomas). The authors think that this is beneficial to people because even though they may be immersed in an unfamiliar and uncomfortable surrounding, they will often find something positive to make out in the situation. Ultimately, people will discover new things, be exposed to new cultures and make new connections and friends. The novels, Travels With Charley and Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck share the theme of traveling. Steinbeck in Travels With Charley has his french poodle he travels across America with, and in Of Mice and Men Lenny has George by his side. These books share many similiarities. In Travels With Charley Steinbeck sets out to see the people of the world trying to pursue the American Dream and in Of Mice and Men the characters are stuck working towards the hopeless American Dream. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Well, The American Dream is written into the Declaration of Independence: "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." The American Dream is the belief of the American Society that each individual can, through hard work and strength of mind, achieve everything they have ever wanted( ). Lennie and George's dream of owning a farm and living off the "fatta the lan" symbolizes this dream. Many of the characters in Of Mice and Men are wanting a different life that represents the American Dream. For example, George and Lennie's American Dream is owning their farm and being their own boss and not having to listen to anyone else. Having this constant thought in mind George and Lenny always work as hard as they can and to save up their money without spending much on their own selfs. Curley's wife is affected by the American Dream before she dies because of her belief that she could be an actress. Even Crooks allows himself the nice fantasy of hoeing a patch of garden on Lennie's farm one day, and Candy latches on desperately to George's vision of owning a couple of acres. Crooks is motivated by his own American Dream, which ends up being one of inclusion and companionship. Before the action of the story begins, circumstances have robbed most of the characters of these wishes. Curley's wife, for instance, has resigned herself to an unfulfilling marriage. Their journey, which awakens George to the impossibility of this dream, sadly proves that the bitter Crooks is right: such paradises of freedom, contentment, and safety are not to be found in this world (Kannan). Not only does Of Mice and Men relate to the American Dream but so does Travels With Charley. In Travels With Charley Steinbeck sets out on his journey and realizes so many people in the real world are trying to achieve the American Dream. • 26. Decision Making In Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken In Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken", we are constantly pounded with with the idea of making choices. But what about choices does Frost want us to realize? After closely reading and analyzing this piece of literature I think it's clear that Frost wants his readers to be more self dependant when it comes to decision making. Takingthe road less traveled by is how Frost illustrates this and as we break down this piece of literature you will see that Frost makes his message very clear in his poem. In the first stanza and line of the poem Frost immediately has exposed to us the choice at hand. "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood."(Frost, #1). So we see this picture of two paths split into seperate ways. Choosing which path to take is a very difficult decision for the traveler. He says he's "sorry he could not travel both" (Frost, #2) making it clear that there is this dilemma for our protagonist on choosing which way to go. In lines three and four the traveler says "long I stood/And looked down one as far as I could."(Frost, #3&4) Frost perfectly paints this picture of the traveler standing there arms crossed, looking down each path, and on his tippy toes trying to get the best look possible at both paths ahead of him. In the second stanza the traveler finally makes a decision and takes the other path. This is where the tone changes in the poem and we finally have this feeling that the traveler made the right decision. "And having perhaps the better claim,/Because it was ... Decisions in Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken Essay Decisions in Robert Frost's The Road Not Taken Throughout our lives we are faced with a number of important decisions, decisions that determine an unseen future. The choices, though often virtually identical, lead to different destinies and often leave us asking "what if?" There are not always signs telling us the way to go or the choice to make; we must find out what lies ahead for ourselves. In his "The Road Not Taken," Robert Frost relates to the reader such a choice, symbolic, perhaps of any major decision in life. In reading this stanza it is important to remember the poem is being narrated after–the–fact. The narrator is giving feelings he had at the time along with the knowledge he has now. Because neither path has an obvious advantage, the traveler makes himself believe the second road "was grassy and wanted wear" even though "the passing there had worn them about the same." As we often do, the traveler conjures up a reason to do something, even though there is no logical explanation for doing it. The path appears as if it "wanted wear," drawing the narrator in. The narrator realizes now his past compulsion and sees that neither path had any "better claim." Even though the narrator has decided on the second path, he "kept the first for another day." The traveler wants to take the first road some day to find out how his life could have been. Even with this compelling sense of wonder, the narrator knows "how way leads on to way" and that he hasn't enough time to change every past decision in order to lead a different life. In this third stanza, the traveler finally goes on his way, but, like most would, he takes along a nagging wonder. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 28. How Does Charles Dickens Use Satire In Huckleberry Finn Charles Dickens, a European writer, travelled to the United States in 1842, early in his career. Dickens' account of the visit, American Notes, was one of the first British viewpoints to demonstrate that an Englishman did not have to be an aristocrat to distrust the American rhetoric. Dickens charged Americans with incivility, arrogance, anti–intellectualism, a predilection for violence, and hypocrisy, particularly about anti–democratic policies such as slavery. Mark Twain, an American writer, wrote of his own travels in his work "The Innocents Abroad." His work described his experiences at some of the world's greatest wonders, with a satirical dryness that seems to devalue the sites' inflated reputations. Both Mark Twain and Charles Dickens stripped their travel writings of romanticism and blind praise, therefore relating their experiences in a brutally honest fashion. Modern travel has become more affordable to people of all different backgrounds and with growing technology it has helped create this booming economy that the whole world in some way benefits off of. Moreover, travel fills our body, soul and mind with strength and positivity and all our thoughts, words, actions and emotions will then radiate from this inner core. Merriam Webster's Encyclopedia of Literature definestravel literature as: Non fiction prose form that depends largely on the wit, powers of observation, and character of the traveler for its success. In the past centuries, the traveler tended to be an adventurer or a connoisseur of art, landscape, or strange customs who may also have been a writer of merit. (Kuiper 1128) Travel narratives are prose forms which are written out of traveler's personal experience and they are considered as an important genre of literary study. They are records of places, people and events of a particular region from the traveler's point of view. • 36. Time Travel In Literature From The Anglo-Saxon Period And... For a brief moment suppose that time travel exists. A conundrum that has influenced our movies, our stories, and proved impossible by the laws of physics, is now a reality. What is the first thing to do: Kill Hitler? Save the Library of Alexandria? Suppose that a time traveler has a great love for literature, specifically literature from the Anglo–Saxon period and the English Renaissance. These two periods had vastly different societies, and due to this, vastly different literature. If the time traveler were to compare the literature from both periods, they would see that as time progresses, the themes in the literature from these periods shift from the bravado of glory and honor to the quieter aspects of life. While time travel may not be an opportunity at the moment, it is possible to step into the traveler's shoes by examining the historical context surrounding these periods. Foremost, the Anglo–Saxon period, was a time when brawn, not brains, won the crown. The Celtic peoples, or Gauls, were loose–knit tribal people who were chased to Great Britain by the Romans, and built Hadrian's Wall to protect themselves. The Germanic people were very similar to the Celtic people: both used human sacrifice and had warrior kings. This was a time of the Vikings, for adventure. It was a time when the old gods–Dagda, Lugh, Odin, Thor, and many others–ruled. In the midst of all of this barbarism, it was oddly progressive, as women could divorce their husbands and own property. As time ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. The Regretful Traveler in Robert Frost’s The Road Not Taken Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" (rpt. In Thomas R. Arp and Greg Johnson, Perrine's Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense, 10th ed. [Boston: Wadsworth, 2009] 725 presents itself with a traveler that is dissatisfied with the decision that he has to make. A situation of life sometime requires a decision to be made between two things that will have a huge impact in the end. The consequences are not always what we expect. I will now explain how Frost used literal and figurative techniques to describe a man traveling through the woods and his thoughts on deciding which road to take. Literally, the man appeared to be content with his travels until he reached the fork in the road, and had to make a decision. Figuratively, he is a man ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Figuratively, he has to make a big decision, and does not have any one to give advice as to which road to take. In leaves no step had trodden black Perhaps the traveler gave up fun and irresponsibility to live what appears to be a responsible and productive life. The traveler stated that he would save the first road but knew that there was a chance that he would not come back to it, because he had anticipated finding more opportunities on the second road. In the last stanza the traveler indicates his regrets with a sigh. It is possible that he sighed because he missed out on life and could have had wealth, or the sigh could mean that he accepts the decision that he chose. The paradox that Frost uses when he put the sigh in the last stanza, allows the traveler to be satisfied with his decision or discontented. To give the poem a musical affect, Frost used masculine approximaterhyme, such as would and could, fair and wear, and black and back. He cleverly uses feminine rhyme in which only half of the word rhyme. Such as, hence and difference in the fourth stanza, and diverge and I in the first stanza. He uses both assonance and consonance on words that falls at regular intervals, and the rhyming is masculine. Frost also uses metonymy with the title The Road Not Taken because he is not actually talking about a road, he is talking about making a decision in life. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. Globalization : The North America, By Thomas Friedman Essay Throughout history, the progressions of mankind has given way to a perpetually globalizing world. Globalization, the "process of interaction and integration among peoples of different nations, has strengthened human ties while our race has formed societies in every corner of the globe. As our world becomes more interconnected, the resulting blend of cultures has led numerous societal features to be shared between peoples, blurring cultural division lines. Globalization's tying binds may frustrate many modern travelers seeking unique and special travel experiences due to the standardization of destinations resulting from increasingly cozy international social relations, but continued and extensive human travel has demonstrated that the essential human urge to move is a product of our search for fulfillment in what is unfamiliar and will not be suppressed by global interconnection. The origin of modern globalization can be traced to Columbus' discovery of the North America, as argued by Thomas Friedman. European exploration during the Age of Discovery invited the rise of extensive European naval trade routes that invited massive exchange of European, African, and American cultures, material resources, and biological property in the form of diseases and mestizo populations from offspring between clashing ethnicities. Triangular trade opened the door for the introduction of foreign foods, plants, and animals into foreign societies. Establishment of European colonies meant that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 42. Beauty Of Travels : The Beauty Of Travel The Beauty of Travel The way that we perceive the world determines who we are. Travelling to unknown places changes our perspective of the world and transforms us to better people because it widens our knowledge of how others live. Ever since I was a kid, my mother has always been repeatedly telling me phrases like, "Son! Don't forget to finish that piece of rice on your plate!", "Son! That pen is still capable of one last word!", and "Son! Look at the kid over there, does he need this? No". I never understood any of my mom's routine nagging until she took me, along with the family, on a trip to the Caribbean. When we arrived in Haiti, I was shocked at how low the quality of life is for an overwhelming majority of the population. For example, a tour guide employed by an American company makes more than a local doctor. It was not long until I realized that my mother's nagging for all these years was her attempt to instill gratitude into me. Our "leaving" to the Caribbean was not only for a memorable vacation, but also for me to experience first–hand how people live in third–world countries to change my perspective of the world so I can become a more grateful person. Before my leaving, I did not understand the full extent of poverty and how terrible the quality of life is in third–world countries. I thought that having no air conditioning, slow internet, or stale bread were problems. But, after my leaving, I realized that my problems are superficial because people in ...
